Oh my heavens! This song! I keep finding more and more from Jimmy. Just when I think his passing will stop hurting, haunting harmonies come forward from yet another piece of work he poured himself and his story into for the people he loved so much. I've never grieved the loss of a person I didn't know more than these past few two months.
I liked this song the first time I heard it, but after reading the chapter in his book about how he lost his father the song takes on a complety new meaning. This is a beautiful song. Love his autobiography, love his music, and love his outlook on life. I'm only 17 and I honestly had never heard of him until about a year ago, but I'm proud to say Jimmy Buffett is my role model. I'm a parrotthead for life!
The wind went away in 2010. Lost my dad to ALS. He lived his final years as the bravest soul I ever knew. Never complained, never pitied himself. Dad was a diesel submarine sailor for twenty years. My brothers and I were fortunate to grow up as navy brats. Stationed in Key West Florida as Jimmy was planting his early roots. Key West was paradise in the early 70s. The fondest memories I have are from there and there are so many of Jimmy's songs that take me back to those days. A brilliant songwriter that touches the soul of people who especially love the ocean! Thanks Jimmy for writing songs that keep that spirit of the wind on the ocean alive and well!
Jimmy's Dad was two months and two days older than mine. His wind went away in January 1980 just nine days before his 58th birthday. He was Army not Navy, but this song honors all fathers who love their families. I play this for my father every year on his birthday and on Father's Day. Thank you Jimmy for a beautiful song so lovingly sung. I've been listening to you since Come Monday and will continue until my wind falters and wanes. Love you Jimmy. Love you Dad.
Great comment my dad was a cowboy and he also grew up through the depression though he didn’t know the sea he knew his children he had a great lifetime relationship with my mother he taught us respect kindness and decency I feel the same way about mountains as jimmy does about the sea the family tradition of enduring echoes are heard in the deep canyons of Idaho I still catch a glimpse of the old man every time I go to the hills may we all be able to hear them as we think of lives well spent
@Johnny Utah, I love his ballads so much more too. Funny, I taught high school one year before becoming a nurse. I taught about poetry in a remedial reading class and we played Jimmy Buffetts music to learn about poetry and ballads. Hopefully they learned a few new words they were not familiar with as well. Now I am teaching the same to my 10 year old❤.
People know Jimmy for Margaritaville but he is really a wonderful songwriter. This song about his dad always makes me cry. Beautiful song. Easy to relate to for anyone who has lost someone who loved life on the water.
This is the story of our fathers that worked day and night to make sure we were secured and taught us how to battle for ourselves when we become responsible for ourselves. The lyrics are very very deep and the melody is breathtaking! I think this is the best of Jimmy Buffet's repertoire and also maybe the best in the folk songs series! Jimmy, you are alive through this song!
People tend to think that Jimmy Buffett is a silly man who makes silly songs about alcohol and vactioning, but he is clearly just as capable of serious country ballads like this. And people tend to have a similar misconception about country music as well...

Agreed. This was my first Jimmy Buffett album, when I was REALLY young; my dad got me hooked on his music. 24 currently, and this album remains one of my favorites. Not knowing the full story of this song until I saw libertydefender's comment, I now have a new respect for "False Echoes". April 1, 2005 he dodged German Submarines and survived a direct hit on his ship by a V-1 (dud) helped build components for the space program. Some of his work still sails on in the engine rooms of the United States Navy. Fair Winds Grandpa... My father has his own course.... Gulf War, Somalia, and a few he's not allowed to talk about. He's still charting it. May he do so for a few more decades.
November 21st 2011 the wind went away for my fathers long battle with cancer. He was a true sailor, a fighter for his country, and a man whom taught his girls to survive. Miss you Dad. Forever chasing the sun, my father, my hero.
2018 now... I still miss my Grandfather (Merchant Marine WW2) and my dad (US Navy 1976-1996) is still charting his course... I'm proud of both... And proud to be a "Son of a Son of a Sailor".
Great song greater message not all of us were blessed with perfectly imperfect fathers not a day goes by that I don’t think of my father and our differences and our similarities i miss him and his understanding maybe my kids might think of me someday this way they sure were raised on j b and the older they get the more they like his ballads life is interesting death is really tough to come to grips with we are left with memories and judgements and how we fit into the picture is ultimately our state of mind I’m glad I’ve got Buffetts music to help me though the morass it’s saved me a ton on therapy hope it’s worked for all of you too

When you really get to the base or foundation of jimmy he pulled himself up out of the blew out flip flop to recognize that we all need family home and great memories to be truly happy and content .
