  • Prop Prince P-Tip for aerovee turbo 54"x50 pitch
    Sorry about the fuzzy focus on the panel. Now that my engine/turbo issues are all dialed in it's time to just fly!!!! Super happy with the performance now. I have not been full throttle yet but when I hit 43" OMG you can feel it pull. I flew the first 30 something hours at 33" max so every once in a while I dial my take off back just to compare.. fun stuff...... I want a faster prop now..

    You can’t cool egt externally… egt is the temp within the exhaust chamber. No amount of airflow on the exterior of the exhaust will have any effect on egt. Egt is the temp at which the exhaust is leaving the cylinder head. If you want to lower egt you need a higher octane fuel. Looking at your Map HG’s you are running roughly 8lbs of boost. 93 octane will most definitely cause high EGTs but if you switched to a fuel like 100 octane your egt problem will most likely cure itself. If you really want to rectify the problem then run c16.
    8lbs of boost with pump gas in a engine that runs a constant load is a recipe for detonation and high EGTs. It’s easily correctable and there are plenty solutions to make your engine run high boost safely for long periods of time with low EGTS and no detonation.

      Good comment. CHTs are the numbers that reflect engine stress - with Lycoming 360s, one really needs to keep them under 400 degrees, so it was a bit of a concern to see the Aerovee's at 420. Different engine I know, but CHTs are the numbers that I am generally more concerned with.

      Actually Its pretty heavy the turbo added around 25 lbs. and at the time my shoulder was bad so i built an electric lift seat that added 25lbs. They list empty weight at 600 and i"m at 670ish... so I eat a cheese burger and I'm at gross.

      Well its not like its a heat issue...I just cant climb as fast as I could if I had BETTER cooling....a rotax just takes money and all the radiators n stuff might not fit.

    It is strange that external cooling would affect EGT temperatures so much. The probe should be inside the exhaust. You would have to have some serious heat soak from the turbo to affect it. You should show a layout of the engine bay.

      Yep the turbo right by #3 egt and it's a tight fit

    Your fuel flow seems a bit high considering you're running a max of 100hp. A Cessna 150 with the O-200 (100hp) at 75% power burns right about 5 gph, a C-172 at 75% about 7.5 gph. Are the Aero-Vee engines that inefficient that they run as much as they do?

    • @1bengrubb
      @1bengrubb  ปีที่แล้ว

      I"m just learning all this so my goal then was to keep EGT below 1400 so I was running super rich. After listening to the Savy Aviator th-cam.com/video/fqe9j74qMdk/w-d-xo.html I learned the goal is to watch CHT . After going to Ohio last summer ONEX vs USA I was running 5gph at 140mph! I just now got a faster prop so I anticipate my fuel burn to go up some. Super fun stuff and a lot of learning..

    Also curious about ias and tas at 17.5k
    Just for science :)
    And just wondering if the turbo will continue to make full power up there.

      Gasoline burns with oxygen.if I can maintain manifold pressure then I'm maintaining the same volume of air entering the engine the only question is what percent of that volume is still oxygen.... Calculate that percent and you know what the horsepower is.... I'll have to try it!

    • @GrantOakes
      @GrantOakes 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@1bengrubb Percentage of oxygen at sea level or altitude is the same, atmospheric pressure is what changes. If you an maintain 30" at altitude you'll have sea level O2, HP and probably still make 80hp.

      The aeroconversions page shows cruise speeds at 8000ft of 170-175mph, and WOT speeds of 187mph with specific props on Sonex/Waiex aircraft. The B-series kits hold 20gal instead of 15, so you can burn a bit more fuel to maintain higher cruise speeds too.

    Do you feel that you have all the pre-ignition issues worked out? I’m assuming it was possibly from the lead build-up? Maybe I missed the video but did u figure out the root cause?

    • @1bengrubb
      @1bengrubb  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Cured!! th-cam.com/video/cNxu301ukvY/w-d-xo.html at 2:00 it shows the lead build up. 1. I overlapped the oil ring 2. caused oil to pool. 3. oil made a cool spot(??) on head 4. caused lead to precipitate on that spot. 5. High power load setting (take off) would make lead glow 6. pre-ignition. I'm using decalinchemicals.com/ invented by a chemist in my home town!! Fall River Mills CA. --town of 400 people. Actually I lived 8 miles from that in Glenburn.
