Had the pleasure of sitting in the jump seat of the 727-200 many times when I worked in management for an airline that's no longer flying. Growing up in Chicago within walking distance of Midway airport I became friends with several of the guys that worked for United airlines in the days before all of the TSA security and was able to tour the planes. It was a simpler time and fun growing up when kids could be trusted.

My father flew the 727 for Eastern out of Boston. I once went on a check ride with him to Bangor. We did an emergency descent in one minute, all kinds of turns, etc. He also flew the DC-3 in the Smithsonian as copilot and ended up on the L-1011. My brother went into commercial flying at 40, almost too late. Dad didn't encourage us; I guess he figured you either want it or you don't.

stylus In 1985, I took my first commercial flight with my family to Florida. I believe it was a 727 we flew on, and it was Eastern Airlines, and we departed from Logan. I wonder if your dad was flying the plane.

Great clip! I started my flying career as a flight engineer in the B727-200 and moved to the right seat for a brief period before getting to fly the B737-500 . That’s the way we like to fly those old birds. My 777 is fine, but I miss the old equipment.

A college friend flies 767s for Delta to Asia. But he was with Northwest flying the DC9 when 9-11 happened. Many younger pilots were required to get type-rated on 727 if they didn't want to be furloughed. He loved his 2 years on the 727 and still speaks highly of it to this day. Northwest flew the heck out of their 727s in those couple years and mothballed many DC9s. Those came back out when the 727s were retired. That's why NWA was able to fly their DC9s longer than basically any other airline. They were a very frugal company and utilized their assets heavily rather than leased aircraft.

Great airplane from maintenance standpoint. Once they came out of heavy check maintenance, they just flew.
Easy to work on, very strong, nothing major really broke on them.
Engine changes here and there, usual tires and brakes, APU changes now and again, but otherwise they went out and did their job.
    Loved the 3 holer.

The 727 was heavily produced from 1963 into the 1970s; the last 727 was completed in 1984. As of July 2017, a total of 57 Boeing 727s (2× 727-100s and 55× -200s) were in commercial service with 27 airlines, plus a few more in government and private use. Airport noise regulations have led to 727s being equipped with hush kits. Since 1964, there have been 118 fatal incidents involving the Boeing 727. Successor models include variants of the 737 and the 757-200.

My favorite ever aircraft, flew on them a lot as a Continental Airlines employee. (Now I even have all my luggage locks set to 7-2-7.) Continental's subsidiary Air Micronesia flew 727s all over the Pacific, a combi version with large cargo compartment right behind the cockpit. The planes had special paint to deal with the crushed coral runways and pilots had to land just right due to the SHORT length of the runways. Happy memories.

I worked with this old girl back when Amerijet owned her. This was in 1990 or so. Pretty reliable even then. I remember loading her one Monday night after they’d used her all weekend to haul fish from down south into Miami. They’d unloaded Monday morning, closed the door down, and let her sit in the sun. Man was that plane ripe even with cargo door open. I can’t imagine being the crew having to spend a few hours locked in on the way to Indy.

Personally, I'm a hand flying kind of guy and I know many airline pilots who hand fly quite a bit. A/P, A/T, and F/D are great tools but they're to be used as appropriate to reduce workload.

Great flying, and, ultimately, a great landing. But it seemed like he came in kind of high -- or at least higher than I'm used to seeing modern jets when they're about to land -- and had to drop those last 30 feet or so in a hurry. Was that the case? Or did it just seem that way because of the length of the displaced threshold? Or was the landing perfect and I just don't know what I'm talking about? (I'm not a pilot so that could very well be the case. :)

Yep. Slats won’t retract and neither will gear. That’s a bad day in a 727 when both A and B systems are gone. Almost the same in a brand new 737... but now each system is engine and electric pumps vs A being engine and B being electric.
