I've rewatched this so many times to try and piece everything together and come up with some theory for the video. This is strictly just my opinion and is completely open for judgment or feedback or even just correction.
Yes, unfortunately the overall video is about how the BF killed his GF because of his over possession and extreme jealousy. But I believe he actually does die in the end. The entire video is him reliving every dark memory to where his GF was completely innocent but he would lash out at every guy that even looked her way too long. The first argument was in the apartment. Where just because a guy outside was on his phone and happened to be looking toward the building, while she had her phone in hand, that she was obviously talking to him , so thats where the final day began.
After that they decided to take a trip to the boardwalk to forget what happened and enjoy themselves. But every time she would be involved in something involving a guy, he would immediately take offense and lash out. This continues the more they go down the boardwalk, and he's getting more angry. So they find the nearest bar to grab a drink and dance.
As the night goes on and they have their drinks, they're loving it up and enjoying the music and most importantly each other. So even though she's paying no mind to anyone but him, his sick mind can't help but look to see if any guys are looking at her. Even though the guy had his own gf with him, he still convinced himself that he was checking her out. The vision we see of him by himself is his inner self that is his pure jealous. It's trying to enjoy itself, even though it's "alone" on the dance floor. But it still finds itself looking for problems, which is why that face resembles pure rage. He starts a fight with this kid and she as a concerned GF was probably trying to pull him off the kid.
Taking this rage back to the apartment, they would have their final fight about why she was trying to save this kid and not let him beat the crap out of him for looking at her. In a blind panic of what he's just done, (Which is why we catch a glimpse of him in black and white, scaredily looking over the railing), he runs from the apartment and just keeps running and running, while everything is slowly catching up to him. Everything that happened throughout the day that led to what he had just done......
And in the end.... He couldn't live with himself...... Him crying to her is him begging for her forgiveness..... And the 5 guys on the beach are supposed to represent the demons he now has to face that are coming for him. Hence him knealing in the sand, and knealing in the street with the car driving straight towards him. Yes, we do not know for sure if he lives or dies. But I want to personally believe that he let himself go because he knew he would not be able to carry that burden for the rest of his life. He killed the love of his life because of demons he could no longer control. And him finally stopping running, and knealing in front of the car, is the end for him.

This is a really interesting take on an abuser. On one hand it shows him as a violent, insecure, toxic individual who should be avoided at all costs.
However, it also allows you to empathize with him. It shows how miserable he really is, and how this isolates him, turning into a self-fulfilling prophecy of misery, loneliness and insecurity.

Over a decade and I still can't think of another piece of music with an intro that evokes this particular emotion. It's hard to even sum up in one word. Panic comes close. It feels like being in a scene where the hero's mind races with memories of his life and loved ones, and he gets up for one more round. The music and visuals match each-other perfectly.

Y'all realize this isn't about a man that killed his girlfriend, right? It's about a man who's insecurities consumed him to the point that he couldn't be the man his woman needed him to be.
His own demons filled his heart AND his girl's heart with hate, and the point of the song is that the dude recognizes that it's *his* fault.
"The nightmares I've been having have arrived. They're changing my future. The sounds of my creation at my door. How could you do this to her." Kinda like, you had a certain power over someone and *this* is what you did with that power.
I can't tell if my other comments got deleted for having links in it. So I guess you'll have to google it on your own. The correct lyrics are "Sirens of my creation." Which could still mean it's still about him either hurting or killing her and the cops are coming. It says these lyrics on the digital deluxe edition of the album and Rob Swire the vocalist for Pendulum stated those were the right lyrics on his twitter December 2nd 2010.

I mean, make no mistake, I understand that the literal "happening" of the song alludes to a murder of passion or a beating or whatever. I'm just saying the underlying energy of that scenario is a song about "dude is weak>dude doesn't recognize he's weak>dude acts out on his weakness>dude's weaknesses ruins his life and someone else's>dude realizes he was the weak one all along". The lyrics work on two levels.
"I will become you tonight" carries an energy of revenge cheating, or "you hurt me, so I will become you and hurt you back". All that jazz. Asp - Me does the same thing. It's basically Crush as a gothic metal track.

I read in the comments many different theories of what the video is about, and i wanted to share mine as well. Here's what i believe: The guy's girlfriend somehow died and he really wasn't ready to accept it, so he starts losing it completely. Wherever he goes, he keeps remembering the times he was there with her, and replaces reality with those memories, though at some points he snaps out of it and realizes he was just imagining (His girl isn't really there). When he dances alone at the bar, again he is imagining dancing with his girlfriend, and another guy with his girlfriend make fun of him (1:58). At 2:17, he stops seeing his girl for a sec, and starts looking for her. Then he sees the couple who were making fun of him, and he thinks the blonde girl is his girlfriend, when she's actually the other guy's girl, not his (compare the girl at 1:57 with that at 2:17). They start kissing at that point, and the guy gets so mad he starts hitting him (thinking he was kissing with his girl) The next morning he's running on the beach and again he thinks he sees his girlfriend. Being so broken, he kneels right next to her, when she suddenly disappears. There strikes reality, when some thugs appear, probably friends with the guy he beat up last night, asking for revenge. They actually beat him so hard he fell into a coma (3:24). There are some parts i still dont understand, i get confused at some points when the past and the future get mixed up, i cant put everything into an order. Well there's no way we can know exactly what was in the mind of the makers of the video, and i believe they made it so undefined so everyone would have his own way of understanding this story, depending on our personal experiences. The guy dancing with his girlfriend in the club and then the cuts to reality when he was dancing alone, halucinating... that hit different.
O SOM DO PENDULUM É ETERNO
Because many people asked: The video is about an insanely jealous boyfriend who beat his girlfriend to death and can't get over it, so he begins to hallucinate.
In detail:
At the beginning, you see him destroying various stuff in rampage and get a first idea of how mad he can become, while his girlfriend sits in a corner, frightened of her hot-tempered boyfriend. We don't know yet if the moment where he runs out of his home and seems confused and disoriented is the moment after he killed his girlfriend or happens sometime after that incident, where all comes back into his head again. You can see during the video that he is a loving boyfriend on the one hand, but on the other hand he freaks out various times when his girlfriend is just talking to strangers. For example, he immediately intermediates as the black man at the beach gives her a volatile kiss; it's obviously just fun and his girlfriend laughs, but this guy can't laugh about that at all. In another situation the same day, he sees his girlfriend just talking to a guy dressed in black. His anger is coming, as usual, so he intermediates here too, without any true reason, while his girlfriend just stands there as she knows these actions from before. Same applies for the man on the mobile phone. He is a random person on a phone, just standing in front of the appartment, but that's reason enough for the protagonist to assume that this is a secret affair of hers. He destroys her mobile phone so she can't call or write with other guys - what she didn't do at all.
The very first camera shot when the music begins already shows us a ticking timebomb, seething with anger. Later we get to know that this shot happens in a club where he dances, remembering old times at this club with his girlfriend, while his girlfriend is actually already dead. He suddenly recognizes that he is alone on the dancefloor, and has the hallucination that his girlfriend sits there with another guy (but you can clearly see some camera shots before that it is a complete other blond woman! - You maybe know this situation when you are in love with a, let's say, blonde woman and almost every third blond woman you see on the street looks like her at first glance). This is yet another one of the many proofs for his extreme jealousy, even after her death, the video producer wants to give you.
This scene shows how he can't overcome her death respectively what he did. He freaks out and beats the blond guy in rampage. That shot, at the end of the video, where the protagonist beats the guy from the club, is used to symbolize what he did to her (days? months? years?) before. That's why only HE is shown, beating the crap out of someone, and most of all that's why that beating scene is blended with the scene where the emergency doctor tries to reanimate his dead girlfriend with a respirator. Pay attention here! Later at the beach, while he has yet another hallucination, hoping his girlfriend would forgive him for what he did, the blond guy from the bar and his friends come to settle an outstanding score, with the viewer not knowing if he survived this act or reunited with his girlfriend in the afterlife...
(PS: It is not about drugs at all, as some people said in the comments. Otherwise all of the people who got attacked or interrupted by this man, including the black guy with the hat who is just an entertainer at Venice Beach, must be drug dealers or somehow involved with it. Moreover there are no shots at all with the girl taking drugs, buying drugs or drugs are shown at all. If you read the story above, you will see that every single camera shot makes sense. I like different interpretations and of course there is not really a "right" or a "wrong" side, because in the end it is about interpretation. But I really think that this drug thing is for one thing made up out of thin air, for another thing stucks with an answer for various of the video scenes.)

ok, no doubt in my mind this IS the best music video I have ever seen. Never has any other video made me question and analyse the lyrics over and over again. Trying to make out what's the story, all I get are theories. The guy delivered the character spotlessly; I can't decide what's up with him. I hope to God Pendulum is back, and they do more videos of this kind (or better yet, a followup to this :D )
I know it's been 5 years but the gist of the story is he killed his partner and is mentally blaming everyone else around him by imagining she's still alive and cheating on him with other men. Although he imagines her cheating he wants to shove the blame on the random dudes, because deep down he knows he's the villain and wants to apologize for how he acted to her. Obviously this never happens, so he spends day and night looking for her to say sorry, facing his guilt over and over. Quite the story and video indeed!

Flat out reading the lyrics helps a lot honestly, even if you know them by heart.

That he got her into drugs and the party lifestyle, didn't stop her before it went too far despite trying and failing, and he blames himself for it. The final scene is him beating the dealer who sold it to her, as a life for a life
