I have trained Shuri Ryu for 32 years beginning under Hanshi Ridgely Abele one of Mr Trias’ senior students. Great style and has changed my life.

GrandMaster Trias was my teacher in the early 1960s. I and many other kids looked at him as something of a second father. We were at the dojo 4-5 times a week for several years, and learned so much from him, even beyond our techniques and katas. His leadership and his ability to build character were outstanding. He emphasized self-control and respect for ourselves, our country and our elders. He was "old school" incarnate. Seeing his daughter Roberta in the role of Sensei and winning in the black belt men's divisions back in the early 60s taught us that women could be just as strong and capable as anyone else. Master Trias' out-of-dojo accomplishments are nothing short of amazing and secured his place in the pantheon of martial arts legends, but we knew him mostly one-on-one as he put us through our paces. It was only many years later that I learned the full extent of his impact on promoting the martial arts in America. I am so happy my Dad saw an article about him and the Trias Dojo in maybe 1959, and took us to watch some classes. That ignited a life-long fascination with and love for the martial arts. THANK YOU for remembering and honoring him!

Wasn't he also a Marine? I think he died of bone cancer. I don't know if this has got to do with the A-bomb testing at any of the Atolls,

Well done. A fitting tribute to Sensei Trias. Many years ago, I studied under instructors of this school. They were great teachers of good character. I always tried to live by the dojo creed.

Never had the chance to meet him, but Trained under one of his students in 1981 (my first instructor). He made sure we knew who he was and had nothing but admiration for him! 💮 Still have my patch!😎

When I met Robert Trias in 1975, he was already suffering from bone cancer. Some of his later pictures show how tired he was becoming. Still, he had the courage to keep teaching and officiating. And he did like the girls, saying "I work hard, so I have the right to play hard". At that time he was getting by on four hours of sleep, due to all of his responsibilities, and dedication to advancing the Art. He pronounced his name Treahs.

I enjoyed watching this video. His dedication to the Martial Arts especially the okinawa karate is really impressive. But what I like most is that he mentions good morals of main importance for a Karate Student. May he rest in peace! Oss...

Thank you for putting this together, I trained under USKA Chief Instructor Mike Awad, during my Karate journey I had the privilege of meeting Master Trias, it is the greatest experience I have ever had, he was truly a great person and a big inspiration in my life and many others. I was fortunate enough to be promoted to Yudansha 1st Degree Black Belt in Phoenix Arizona March 1988, Kiai David Swingley Cincinnati, Ohio

I trained under sensei Ric Beach for many years. I remember going to sensei Awad school for seminars and tournament competitions in the mid 80s. Both of our instructors were incredibly talented and dedicated. With great sadness, we lost sensei Ric Beach three years ago. I miss those days. I made Ni Dan and wouldn't trade it for anything.

His Maxim is the definition of the perfect martial artist- MMA, karate, BJJ, Aikido, Judo, etc. He was no phony unlike some who gave themselves ranks and entitlements. To those who studied under him, please share with us the inspiring stories about the man. The song at the end: Cielito lindo- I don't thinK GM Trias, should be called "little darling"

Sadly, his ranks were not legitimate, nor were his claims to have been in death duels on the pacific islands during WW2.
He even made himself 10th dan at one point and later lowered his rank. He did know something but his actual time in training was not adequate to be a high dan rank. I've met a number of his students....long ago, and many said their ranks given by him were way to high for their skills. By the way, John Keehan ( count dante ) was trained ( briefly ) by Trias, and was given a rank far too high for his skills also.

The USKA organization was well known for paper Tigers with high ranks. Keehan a perfect example.

"Karate knowledge shall only be given to those whose moral character can thoroughly be trusted" said by Robert Trias a man who invented his own martial arts among these American Shuri Ryu which lineage is denied by the Japanese Shuri Ryu. Robert Trias who is with James Mitose, Ed Parker, Count Dante, George Dillman, Frank Dux and so many more responsible for the American McDojos in the USA, Canada and Australia.
Spawning hundreds of US McDojos with fake black belts (not certified by Japan or Okinawa), with low level techniques skill, low level Japanese Terminology knowledge, low to medium level Kumite skills, ultra low level kata forms and a legacy of bad ranking in real Karate international and world tournaments since the 1970's for the USA.
Robert Trias who with convicted criminal and martial arts fraud John Keehan (Count Dante) invented the first fake World Karate Tournament where only low skilled mostly fake lineage Karateka competed while the Real Deal World Elite in Karate were already fighting and training in Japan, France, United Kingdom and The Netherlands.
Robert Trias with James Mitose the fathers of American McDojo "Karate" where Korean martial arts practionners like Chuck Norris win in their fake World Karate championships six times :-) would never happen in real Karate World championships.

Well, I wasn't going to say anything but, since you did, you are completely correct. American karate was garbage until Demura, Kuniba, Hayashi and a few other Japanese moved over here and began to straighten things out.

@@ifyouloveChristyouwillobeyhim en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Karate_in_the_United_States America is not traditionally considered a "world power" in Sport Karate, and its record in Karate World Championships is poor for a country its size and wealth.

Your country has only 6 world titles in the true World championships (yet you fakers claim that Chuck Norris alone has 6 World titles, plus Joe Lewis titles, plus Jim Kelly, Mike Stone, Vic Moore, all those titles do not add up to 6, they are all made up in your invented federations. In true World championships you got beaten down my my sensei from Japan 90 World titles, France 55, Italy 19.

      en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_Trias
Trias' style was once dubbed, by Trias himself, as Shuri Karate Kenpo, Goju-Shorei-Ryu, and Shorei-Goju ryu though there is no relationship or direct ancestry to the Goju-Ryu currently practiced in Okinawa or the original form of Shorei-ryu once practiced by the Okinawans. His style is now referred to as Shuri-ryu to imply roots to traditional karate though his style is much different from any martial art originating from the Okinawan islands.[citation needed] It has much more Chinese influence and overtones than Okinawan[citation needed]. The naming of his style was as eclectic as the style itself. A few US organizations claim to trace their roots to him and the USKA, including the United States Karate-Do Kai, Professional Karate Commission, United States Karate Alliance, International Shuri-Ryu Association, and Kondo No Shokai.

The Real Zenforce: I have no arguments with your observations. I participated in a fair number of tournaments where real fighting skills were scarce and low-skilled or unscrupulous black belts made money by teaching people trumped up movement forms. Nonetheless, it was through numerous personal contacts at our dojo, at seminars in Phoenix, and international travel with the OSensei that I both learned a great deal about karate, traditional karate, styles that were completely different from what the Osensei taught, and about him as a person and a man. I personally witnessed him and his high ranks demonstrating techniques that in some cases were simply astonishing.
What I'm trying to say is this: as an anthropologist goes into a foreign country knowing nothing of the people or their culture, Master Trias brought back to America something that he had only begun to learn while in the Orient. Over the years, he made annual pilgrimages back to Japan, Okinawa, China, and other countries to learn more. What he learned, he brought back and taught to others so that American understanding and practice of martial arts could become deeper.
Your comments seem to be comparing American commercialization of the martial arts to millennia-old martial arts practices of the Orient. Honestly, whatever you might think of the commercialization of the arts through McDojos or tournaments, they nonetheless have served a very useful purpose (IMO) for a great many people across America. There are people who truly view karate, kung fu, judo, etc., as art forms and are able to both practice them and focus on improving their skills and knowledge while sharing with and learning from others.
It would be pleasing to hear your thoughts on how to best improve the American situation in martial arts so that whatever good points you perceive in the martial arts in their countries of origin can be brought to bear here.
      Osu.
