I had a pigtail stent placed on Monday (no chance of getting the stone out) and this has cleared up a bunch of questions I wanted to ask.

I am 63 years old. After having ERCP twice pigtail stent was inserted replaced by SEMS after six months.

We use double pigtail regularly for hilar strictures and do not see the problem you mentioned. We use 8.5 Fr. though; could this be the reason?

Because pigtail stents are narrow they're not designed to drain bile through them - but round them. Placing a few pigtail stents through a hilar stricture may therefore create enough space for the bile to drain through. However, a 10Fr straight stent is preferable (until a tissue diagnosis is confirmed)
