    I really appreciate that you acknowledge your mistakes while instructing. I see tons of teachers on youtube say how to do something, demonstrate, clearly mess it up, and then just not acknowledge it or do a camera cut. As a viewer, I know everyone makes mistakes and it is so helpful to see what can go wrong when fixing something else AND how to address it. As someone who loves to turn and watch the disc (I do the same thing in golf) it is refreshing to see it talked about because I don't see it mentioned as much in the disc golf swing as I do in golf swing instruction. That has caused me for a long time to think it must not be a big issue. I feel better knowing it is, because I can fix it.

      Yeah, I was pleased that Josh choose to leave that in too. I chose him as the 1 coach to show me a way. I won't watch the stuff my friends give me.

    Just a month ago, I almost threw my bag in the trash on my way out of the course because I was so frustrated that I couldn’t throw as far or accurately as I wanted to. In the last month, mostly because of your videos, I’ve added nearly 50’ to my distance and I’m playing 5ish strokes better on every course. I’m playing -2 on my local easy 9-hole course now. All thanks to you guys. You really make a difference.

      Yikes. You're not on the pro tour, chill out and relax and enjoy the game. You need repetition, not to be treating every round you play like it's life and death. It's not for you if you only enjoy it when you do well.

      Josh is the best coach on YT. Idk what got you throwing your bag away last month, but I'm glad you're still here and I hope your bag is too homie. Don't get frustrated, fun is the most important part. Remember, the field is for work, the course is for fun. Don't take anything too seriously unless you're playing for a paycheck.

      @@derpderpin1568 you may think you’re being helpful with this comment, but as someone who struggles intensely with depression, ADHD, and negative self-image, you’re just beating a dead horse with me here. I *obviously* know that I’m taking it way too seriously, you don’t need to tell me that. It’s just how I do things. I’m in therapy to try and figure out how to treat myself better and take things less seriously.
      Try thinking about things from other perspectives before making such snide comments. I love this sport and am striving every day to get better at it so I can enjoy it even more.

    I love that you are keeping the mistakes you make in the video and do not edit it to look perfect.
    It shows us "normals" that it is not a big deal if we mess up, pros do it to.
    This video was about correcting mistakes and seeing you do it was a good way to learn!

    Josh is the best coach on TH-cam and I'll sing his praises from the rooftops wherever I go. I was hitting 350'+ drives in my 6th month of ever playing this sport because of his videos. I'm not out of shape, but not exactly a natural athlete either. If i can do this, anyone can. Listen to coach Josh.

    I've needed this. I've finally gotten consistently over 400ft but have been spraying it. I applied the thinking in this video and shot one of my best rounds of the year.

    Appreciate the honesty and it just makes me feel like I am not crazy lol I feel like this happens more than not, I fix one mistake and then I mess something else up, I'm still trying to find that rhythm that works for me.     Great content and teaching. Love the addition of the mistakes and learning yourself. One of the hardest things to do when figuring out an issue is fixing one thing at a time and not changing more stuff that creates a different problem. It is so important to be able to identify this.

    I recently grip locked and consistently missed right at least 4 times, made me start to question why I’m even backhanding at all. But you’re right my upper body is a major issue and my head looking to early at the target are the issues. Gonna have to give backhand another shot and commit to the hand.

    My fix for over involving upper body to this point was a 1/2 reach back. This will give me a new remedy to work on👍

    Committing is my #1 issue. So many early releases that go low right (lefty backhand). Then I over commit and turn too quickly resulting in a “late” release and yank the shot wide on a spike hyzer line.

    I think it’s important to state that these tips are “form fixes” that should really be applied during practice instead of a tournament setting. The mental game I feel is really what should be focused on in tournament play because no form fix is gonna save you if you’re already out of it in your mind (taken from personal experience). Regardless, great tips that I’ll work into my shadow/field work

    Often times when pulling right, you’re trying to sight your gap or something with your head and your head leads the pull. Keep the eye on the ball and head down and pulling right becomes pretty hard to do other than a grip issue.

    I’ve been frustrated for a long time playing disc golf. I’ve reverted to a standstill for the last year or so now but I have a horrendous shanking problem. There’s been multiple occasions where I’ve literally thrown the disc behind me (once during a tournament). I feel like I should give up. Im going to keep trying your recommendations though. Thank you for your videos. I’ve been waiting for that aha moment where it all clicks.

    I wish i saw this video friday, played my first tournament Saturday. Did horrible lol but had fun playing. It poured the whole time, but i did get a trance, echo, watt. We had to use those discs, and i also got the mvp watermelon pitch so it made it great.

    Quiet the upper body. Very zen. If you revisit this concept a great intro would be a re-enactment of the scene from the matrix where Neo visits the oracle and the child monk tells Mikey the truth. "There is no spoon. It's not the spoon that bends; only yourself"

    I find myself making another mistake that causes right shanks (RHBH). If I am scared of turning over to the right because that is the error to avoid, I will often walk up angled left because I'm subconsciously wanting to avoid going right. However, to throw the disc straight the direction I want, my body now has to compensate and throw it back across itself. Well, that almost always results in an overcompensation and yanking it right. I fix it by committing to a straight walk up and trusting myself to hit the line. Of course, if I sighted my shot from my lie and walked back straight as Josh demonstrates, that would fix it. I need to do that. I tend to position myself behind my lie (or at the back of the tee area) and then sight my line and choose my walk-up direction. I will change that ASAP!

    When I shank right, doing/thinking about the fan drill helps me. Both when the shank is from over-rotating (like in video) or my power pocket becomes a chicken wing (the other cause of my misses right)

    Cool video! I think I understand the general point of the video but I have a question : If it’s a ratio between hand involvement and body involvement like you said near 9:30, then why for both misses do you have the same fix? You say that if you release late there’s too much body involvement (=need less body) and if you’re releasing early your hand wasn’t involved enough (=more hand). If it’s a ratio of hand and body involvement then aren’t both fixes changing the ratio equally? Surely this doesn’t mean you should increase hand involvement and decrease body involvement for every miss?

    Another early miss issue which you didn't mention could be the grip. Happens to me from time to time I kind of forget to hold the disc tight enough and it slips out of hand while pulling through

      For sure, I get that trying to fan-grip sometimes, because I can't grip as hard. Conversely, sometimes I get late releases if I'm trying to power grip a midrange and I'm gripping too hard.

      @@benharrison5816 yeah for that very same reason I use different grip for midranges and putters. It's basically the classic powergrip except my two middle fingers are staying flat on a flightplate. Certainly I lose a little power but I get much more stable flight in the direction I want it to

    I've been a forehand dominant player for about a year and am now learning my backhand and had been pulling shots right, i really appreciate the advice! Do you have any tips on how to get the angle closer to a slight hyzer? I also have problems with the disc coming out on a hard anny and burning over

    I had a different issue when releasing to the right a few weeks ago. The problem was my plant foot lifting the toes before the disc was released, leading to the body rotating too early.

    Sometimes when I early release its cus as I supinate out of the "briefcase" to try and get the nose down. Is there something like timing that plays a roll in that or is it just a grip issue?

      I think there’s a little more grip pressure needed for briefcasing but can’t know for sure without seeing it

    As I understand it, you’re saying that the chest going forward may cause late release. Yet, if you look at Eagle’s drive (e.g. the new super slow motion video on the Anthem Films Disc Golf channel) you can clearly see that his chest is virtually facing the the trajectory of the disc at the hit point. Yet, he doesn’t shank because the disc leaves his hand at about 11 o’clock or so.

      Correct. Eagle is more open than most at about 25° open. If his chest was more forward than it usually is, let’s say 45° open, he would probably miss right. It isn’t about everyone be more or less open than each other but compared to their own form.

    I also find I miss left due to a weak grip or early body turn resulting in the disc hitting my back shoulder (not finding the power pocket). Usually the latter is because I’m rounding. Reaching outwards on a 45 fixed this (for me)… imo

    I'm nobody. But everybody knows this feeling, when you know you did it right. Pre OT I was using Nate Sexton's tip for beginners, Line up your lead hip or elbow with your target. Danny boy Lindahl taught me straight back reach back and cured my rounding issues. ;Relax boss, this is pre OT discovery, don't hit me...Again (Josh hits us) So, the routine demonstrated here to line up the shot would've been game changing for me if I saw it years back. Just like putting, there's a routine when you're on the tee pad. Like a tree, the roots of my routine are too deep. So, next stage was feeling the disc, Not disc selection for the shot. Every disc felt like it cab aim me as crazy at that sounds. transmitting,🔭 into my nervus system was connected to it. Sometimes the disc aims me if that makes sense. but that requires me to take my hand out of the 90 degree box because I need it in my periphery on the walkup. It's still useful at times but when you're shooting down a hallway. To me, NOW it's become about listening to your feet. To the original point, I had an epiphany about a month ago. Tunnel shot downhill out of the woods where the branches create a low ceiling arch; sloping downwards. No hip angle because it's downhill and I don't know how to negative hip angle. So gave me one less element to account for. So the hip thing gone, my mind just walked that line. A fury. Understable fairway driver. That moment where you know it. I knew I laced it. Again, I'm nobody but I wish I saw this video years ago. I tried this walk back from the front of the tee pad, Unfortunately my system can't accept this addition to my routine, But for the aspiring, I would definitely do this if you're starting out.
    And if you read this far, I believe when you're throwing down a hallway this video is the 1 to watch.

      It's my most memorable moment of this year. I didn't ace, but it was a moment of grace. It's directly related to this video's concept of getting the walk up line on lock The way I do a tunnel shot is kind of gypsyesque. I look at the tunnel and the slope. try to feel where I should stand. then adjust hip for swing plane if it's uphill. It must be annoying at times for my friends to watch me. Or amusing

      @@OverthrowDiscGolf I thought about it more today during a casual round. When it's bombs away open field. Sounds paradoxical, in a sense but I'm thinking a wide open shot, your approach line is actually much more critical. Where you walk to the front of the tee pad. Where do I aim with this disc. Don't always see it in the deep blue sky but you know where you want to see that disc fly. Ok look down a little bit. Ok ill line up with that thing. walk the line backward.
      In this hypothetical scenario, I'm not focusing on footwork, don't have to hit a line. I just walk back from my point of reference on the horizon. Like a bow and arrow? Because if it's wide open, I'm using hip tilt, just have to walk back and forward from my reference point, and put my pentium 2 processor on the angle. If that makes sense.

      @@OverthrowDiscGolf BTW. played my first round at Spring Lake, To me it was challenging, buddies played it a couple times before but my debut. Walking up to the tee..."Bryan WTF is this? How...." I'm giving him shit but wow. "There is no line Bryan what am I supposed to do?"
      Alright, There is no spoon. 😉
      What was cool was on the final 2 I threw my precious maul and fury which I can't risk. Maul, maybe 150 to 175 feet into a garage size or soccer goal mouth of the woods. Maybe another 100 ft gradual down slope to basket. Ceiling decreasing again. Kind of nailed it off the tee pad.
      Fury shot was forked about the same distance out but Uphill. Mind you these are both discs that I'll feel their loss but I was feeling good. It was stupid, first time playing spring lake but when my buddies were found their discs, Jesse is like, "is that your upshot?" "No" "Fuck you." He smiles

    I've found out that taking a peek at the disc when it's behind you mysteriously adds 10' even if you're not looking forvard. YMMV.

    This is something I've been noticing and trying to tackle myself. I've come to the conclusion it's my grip. If it's too loose, the disc "falls" out of my hand going left. If it's too tight, the disc literally sticks to my index finger and goes right. Are you saying grip doesn't even matter?

      Grip matters but comes up less often after the early stages of form work. Over rotation and passive hand are the recurring problems imho
