Thank you for the great video! I learned:
    - Lanikai Beach is located on the east side of Oahu.
    - Its original name was Ka’ohao, which means “tying together”/“joining together”.
    - The reef on Lanikai Beach reaches nearly a half a mile out to sea.
    - The reef diffuses most of the wave energy before it reaches the beach, so there isn't much surf.
    - The beach is approximately a mile long, narrowing at the ends and widening in the middle.

1.Lanikai was developed from the koolau shield volcano
    2. The reefs of Lanikai extends out for almost half a mile diffusing wave energy and breaking it down before it reaches the beach.
    3. The seawalls actually contribute to the erosion because they don't help produce sand.
    4. The islands off Lanikai are Moku Nui and Moku Iki and both are part of Hawaii's state seabird sanctuary.
    5. The white sand beach of Lanikai extends out for about a mile narrowing at the ends and widens in the middle.

    1. Lanikai was originally called Ka’ohao, meaning ‘tying together’ or ‘joining together’ in Hawaiian.
    2. In 1925, a Honolulu businessman with the name of Charles R. Frazier bought 111 acres of beachfront property then bought an additional 280 acres from Maunawili, developing the Lanikai community as it is today.
    3. Lanikai Beach's reef is almost half a mile out to sea functioning as a breakwater, diffusing most of the wave energy before it reaches the beach.

This was such a pleasant and educational video!
    1. Lanikai's wide fringing reef extends about 1/2 a mile out to sea, acting as a breakwater, diffusing most of the wave energy before it reaches the beach.
    2. Lanikai's ocean bottom slopes to overhead depths along the entire beach - a contour that normally would encourage small trade winds and cause surf, but Lanikai beach is usually surf-free.
    3. Lanikai beach is generally straight, 1 mile long, and narrows at the ends and widens in the middle.
    4. Moku Nui is the larger island that consists of white sand, and the smaller island is Moku Iki and has a pebble beach.
    5. Human intrusion on nautral beaches like the building of sea walls has been found to be ineffective among beach loss because the beach is unable to create sand.

  • @johnbuck9625

Awesome presentation and quite intimidating as an example for other students to do. Very informative with great coverage of history, geology, and present-day usage.
    1. Man-maid shoreline structures like seawalls designed to preserve oceanfront land and buildings (real estate) adversely affect the natural sand replenishment process, reducing its accumulation along the shoreline.
    2. Sand loss from the north and south ends of the beach will only get worse as sea levels rise from global warming.
    3. The reduction of shoreline sand allows the ocean to move inland and eat away at the land and structures built to preserve it (seawalls), accelerating shoreline loss due to erosion.
    4. Lanikai’s reef extends far from shore, causing waves to release much of their energy before reaching shore, making the water calm and shallow, gently sloping from the shore to the reef.
    5. The ocean is also clear, seemingly unaffected by silt and particulates from freshwater streams.

    2. the original name for lanikai was actually called ka’ohao which means tying together or joining together. Charles R Fraiser named this beach Lanikai where he thought it meant "heavenly sea" but written in hawaiian it actually means "sea heaven".
    3. This beach is approximately 1 mile long, it narrows at both ends and widens in the middle. The water is clear and not clouded by stream runoff.
    4. There are two islands at the south end of the beach known s the mokulua islands or for short the twin islands. The large island is called moku nui which consist of white sand and the small island is called moku iki that has a pebble beach.
    5. The beach lost a lot of its precious white fine sand and suffered severe erosion problems. The problem will get significantly worse as global warming causes sea levels to rise Some other causes to erosion are storms and human actions such as the construction of sea walls, jetties and the judging of the stream.

    Aloha,
Thank you for this video, it was very informative. I have always loved Lanikai Beach, and enjoy kayaking out to the Mokes. Despite having spent a lot of time in Kailua and Lanikai, I learned several things that I did not know before!
    1. I learned that Lanikai's original name was Ka'ohao, meaning "tying together" or "joining together."
    2. I did not know that there were 10 access entrances! I have never driven that far down Mokulua Drive, nor have I ever counted them.
    3. Learning the fact that the reef is half a mile out at this beach was interesting. It has always seemed to extend further than at some other beaches, creating a calmer, flat affect whenever I visit Lanikai, allowing for optimal swim/float and snorkel conditions. Now, I know the physical reason behind this.
    4. Lanikai Beach is about half the size it once was, due to climate change and erosion. :(
    5. Seawalls disrupt the natural process and are proven to be ineffective against erosion - sad that we continue to build them, as "humanity's" interests are more concerned with $$$ and property value over preserving nature.

Hi! This video was lovely to watch, and taught me things I did not know despite living here all my life:
    1. Lanikai, or Ko'ohau was developed by the Ko'olau volcano.
    2. The reef formations of Lanikai stretch for a half of a mile into the sea, and that is what diffuses the waves before reaching the shore.
    3. The sand on the beach stretches the coast for about a mile.
    4. The north and south sides of the beach has decreased half of its size, and is seemingly going to worsen in the upcoming decades.
    5. Erosion, global warming, sea level rising, sea wall construction, and other human factors contribute in the disturbance of natural sand flow, preventing the replenishment of the beaches.

Here are a few things I learned from this video. 1) The reef breaks down the big waves before it reaches the beach shore. 2) The beach is 1 mile long. 3) No stream runoff allows the water at Lanikai beach to appear more clear. 4) Due to erosion and sea level rise, the beach is half of it's original size. 5) The sea walls at the beach protect the houses but contribute to the erosion and "beach loss".

I love to visit Lanikai every two weeks to go up to the pill box and chill on the beach afterwards. So I am thrilled to learn more about such a place.
1, Lanikai was formerly called Ka'ohao, mainly because it means a bond or union.
2, The beach has been eroded by the ocean and is now half the size it used to be.
3, On the south side of the beach are two islands called the Twin Islands, the larger of which, Moko Nui, has a white sand beach, while the smaller, Moko Iki, has a pebble sand beach.
The beach is about 1 mile long, narrow at both ends, and has a total of 10 entrances and exits.

I visited Lanikai Beach several times before and every experience I had there were quite pleasant. However, its been quite sometime since the last time I went since its pretty far from where I am. This video really gave me a great insight on the history of Lanikai and the geology behind its creation, so I’ll be sure to check off a date so I can visit it.
Here are the five things I’ve learned after watching the video:
    1. Lanikai Beach is located on the East side of O’ahu island and was formed by the Ko’olau shield volcano, the offshore reef, and the two smaller islands
    2. The Original name for the Hawaiian land is Ka’ohao which means “Tying Together” or “Joining Together”
    3. Lanikai Beach has a wide fringing reef that extends half a mile out to sea which functions as a break water, diffusing much of the wave energy. This makes the beach usually surf free
    4. Lanikai Beach is approx. 1 mi long and narrows at both end, widening in the middle.
    5. The two smaller islands out from Lanikai beach are known as Mokulua islands. The larger island is called Moku Nui that consist of white sands. The smaller island is called Moku Ike and has a pebble beach. Both are apart of Hawaii’s seabird sanctuary.

    1. It was originally called Kaʻohao.
    2. The Mokes are a bird sanctuary and you can only set foot on Moku Nui.
    3. Due to erosion the beach is half the size that it was when I was young
    4. Because of the shape of Lanikai and the Mokes, there is very little wind and it produces no surf.
    5. Because there is no stream runoff, the water is very clear and makes for great swimming.

Yes the Lanikai beach is a beautiful beach as I was going through the process of looking at the clear waters and nice gentle tides flowing in to the shore. Sand is important for the beach but once the sand is gone or not enough sand is there on the beach in the sandbar, then things can go wrong when the waves become a bigger and stronger as the tides become big with stronger winds. As I was listening to the video of the Lanikai Beach it kind of reminded me of the Waikiki beach, when the Waikiki beach was losing sand from the rising shores from the waves. Then the Waikiki beach had to order thousand pound bags of sand to refill the sandbars.

    3) The water is clear because the mountain runoff doesn't go to that area.

Loved this video! I have a lot of memories of going to Lanikai beach early in the morning to watch the sunrise and it was beautiful every time.
    Here are 5 Geological/Environmental things I learned:
    1. The original name of the beach was “Ka’ohao” which translates to “tying together” or “joining together”
    1. Lanikai's reef extends around half a mile out to sea which causes most of the waves energy to be diffused before it reaches the shore.
    2. Lanikai beach is famous for its sunrises and moonrises.
    2. There are two smaller islands off the coast of Lanikai and they are called the Mokulua islands (twin islands). The bigger island is named Mokunui and the smaller one Mokuiki, these islands have become the state seabird sanctuaries.
    4. Due to erosion because of rising sea levels Lanikai has lost most of its white sand. This was a result of global warming and geologists predict it will only get worse as time proceeds. Another reason for this is seawalls which disrupt the natural flow of sand.

2.Lanikai’s original name was”A“Ka‘ohao”,which means “trying together”in Hawaiian.
3.Mokoiki Island has lost a lot of white fine sand due to severe erosion
4.Other erosion causes, such as storms and human activities, which have led to rising sea levels and global warming.
5.Erosion disrupts the natural flow of sand seawalls

I learned a lot about Lanikai beach. Lanikai beach was one of he first places I visited when I arrived in Hawaii.
    1. Lanikai original name was ka'ohao (tying together) but it was changed to Lanikai thinking that it meant heavenly sea when in reality it means sea heaven.
2.. water is clear and not clouded y stream runoff
    3. The beach has suffered erosion problems causing there to be less sand.
    4. sea walls are affecting sand movement. They protect houses but are affecting the production of sand.
    5. The reef acts a a break water. reducing wave energy before it gets to the shore.

    1. Lanikai is located on the east side of Oahu.
    2. Lanikai is famous for its sunrises and moon rises.
    3. Original name for Lanikai was called Ka'ohao, meaning tying or joining together.
    4. Lanikai in Hawaiian means sea heaven.
    5. The Lanikai's wide fringing reef extends almost half a mile out to sea that functions like a breakwater.

    1. Lanikai has two small offshore islands called nā Mokulua which means "the two islands."
    2. Lanikai was originally named Ka'ōhao which means "the tying."
    3. The reefy seawall prevents waves from breaking onshore
    4. Lanikai is 1 mile long
    5. The water has not been affected by stream runoff and remains clear

    1. There are 10 beach access entrances on Mokulua drive that leads to Lanikai beach
    2. The original name for Lanikai was Ka'ohao meaning joining together
    3. Has twin Islands known as Moku Nui and a small island called Moku Iki
    4. The Reef extends half a mile out to sea
    5. The seawalls actually contribute to the erosion because they don't help produce sand
