Morris, Smoltz recall 'heavyweight fight' in Game 7 of '91 World Series

- An oral history of Game 7 of the 1991 World Series showdown between the Minnesota Twins' Jack Morris and the Atlanta Braves' John Smoltz.
This was the last game I watched with my Dad. He passed away in November.
We were Tiger fans and although Jack Morris left Detroit, we both witnessed a gutsy and stellar performance. I’m so grateful I got to watch it with my Dad, a former minor league player who brought me up with baseball.

Jack Morris pitched the best game I witnessed. He pitched a 10 inning shutout in game 7 of the World Series. That’s unheard of. He was unstoppable. You were on the edge of your seat the whole game. Both teams battled hard and Chuck Knoblauch’s brilliant fake in the 8th arguably saved the game but Morris’ performance is the thing you’ll always remember.
Smart play by knoblach. Lonnie Smith ughhhh. Knoblach hit great in that serious too.
If Lonnie Smith was fooled by Knoblauch, why was he looking into the outfield and not at Knoblauch? Smith was not fooled by Knoblauch. He knew who was in center field, that being Kirby Puckett. Slowing up to look for the ball was the smart play. If Puckett somehow makes the catch, he has to get back to first. If he doesn’t, you still have second and third with nobody out. Whenever you have second and third with nobody out, you need to score at least two runs. The Braves didn’t. Lonnie Smith was not the reason the Braves lost that game 7.

I was in the Navy and out to sea when this game was played. I'm a life long Braves fan and it's still heart breaking to this day, but to me it's the BEST game EVER in Baseball History.

I missed a lot of stuff being out to sea, but this wasn't one of them, most of them involved LSU football in early 00's
Best pitching performance in a must win game by BOTH starting pitchers probably ever. Smoltz outpitched Morris through 7. But Jack just wasn't giving up a run. Wasn't going to happen. What a game.
Still, it says a lot that the Braves had every chance to get him when they could.
BJ Stone crazy to look at it from that angle-- that he'd always wonder what would have happened if he had been a little more seasoned. Not because of the question of whether he'd have pitched any better (practically impossible!) but if he had been more of a veteran, he might have argued with Cox to let him stay in the game when he came out to remove him when he got in trouble in the 8th. But as it was, he didn't feel like he had the standing to do that as a fairly inexperienced pitcher--unlike Morris who did argue his way back to the mound when Kelly wanted to take him out after the 9th. Interesting way to look at it. Never know what little things make the difference.
Breathtaking. It was CBS Baseball's finest hour. In their 4 year contract back then.

It certainly was the most memorable game (and Series( I have ever watched (on TV). Hats off to Morris and Smoltz for such a nail biter!

There's some things in sports that seemed like they shouldn't have ended. In my head, Barbaro is still sprinting around Churchill Downs, and Smotlz/Morris are still out there on the mound in game 7
This series was the best and greatest because of the four extra innings and game 7 was a masterpiece
I was only 10 years old, watching this game with my parents on their couch. Still the greatest game in any sport I've ever seen. Best shit ever was showing my wife this game a few years ago (she's from Hawaii so the only team she ever paid attention was the Dodgers, but loves baseball) and her literally crying and said "this is bullshit, this game was too good for them to not both win" lol

We Lost...but we won. I was upset when we lost. But from a baseball fan point. The Best World Series ever. I watched every last out.Hats off to the Twins.They had just a litle bit more.FYI it was fun as hell being a Braves fan from that year on until recently. We were always in it.We did not always win it.But we were there.And it was fun. Playing the Pirates that year...MAn oh Man!
I was 14 that year and I remember watching the NLCS vs The Pirates and it was pretty intense also. Being a Braves Tim Wakefield (knuckle ball, remember?) made me very nervous in that series. The World Series that year was the most memorable one ever for me.
I remember being pretty heartbroken as a Braves fan. Now, even as a kid I knew enough that I had to give it up for the Twins, that was a hell of a team and probably the only team that could have beaten Atlanta in that Game 7. The Twins even had a few players I had always liked as a kid, too, like Kirby Puckett and Chili Davis.
I know as Twins fans, we are living in the past but I feel that's all we have. Hopefully this young group we have can change things. The Twins teams of '87 & '91 have at least given me hope when it comes to all Minnesota teams. Hopefully the 2017 Vikings can bring us some glory.

Don't forget Gladdens broken bat single he stretched into a double to start the inning which was the eventual winning run.

Love how old school pitchers like Jack make you believe like this aint just a baseball game.....this is a duel by two masterful pitchers one older and one jus startin out....i miss when startin pitchers would pitch 9 innings often like it wasnt shit.....Jack was just a gritty gritty pitcher and like Smoltz said you were gonna have to beat Jack....he wasn't gonna beat himself.
As a Braves Fan for 43 years, I tip my hat to Jack Morris.. Lonnie Smiths bonehead mistake on the Pendleton Double cost Atlanta the World Series... You can't make that kind of mistake in that kind of Game.... It stung for awhile..

Look at that video and you’ll see Smoth looking into the outfield. Why? Because he knows who’s out there. That being Kirby Puckett. That man had a cannon for an arm and could reach ANYTHING. There’s no way you could be sure he wasn’t going to catch the ball. Especially when you remember the ball he DID CATCH the night before. Sid Bream hitting into a 3-2-3 double play was far worse than Lonnie Smith’s “bonehead play”. When you have second and third with nobody out, you need to score at least two. The Braves didn’t even get one. THAT is why they lost Game 7.
Lonnie Smith blew that game for the Braves. To this day I have no idea why he stopped at 2nd?
Who was playing center field for the Twins? Oh and fundamental baseball says you don’t risk making the first out at home. Smith made a smart baserunning play. When you’re not sure where the ball is, or better still, when you know who’s in center field, you be a little more cautious. They still had second and third with nobody out and didn’t score. Lonnie Smith wasn’t the one who hit a weak ground ball that didn’t get a run home. That was Ron Gant. He wasn’t the one who hit into a double play. That was Sid Bream. They’re more at fault for not getting a clutch hit.
what game 7 is better? This one? or the game 7 where Bumgarner came in and threw 6 innings shutout ball vs. KC after winning two games previously
1991 beats 2014 by a mile. No offense to Bumgarner, because he pitched gas, but Morris and Smoltz just would not blink.

The Braves should have won it 1-0 ... Bad base running in which the runner fell for a trick cost them the World Series...... That was a classic game. The Braves were the best team in baseball in the 1990's -- and i'm NOT A BRAVES FAN....
The Braves should have won, but Lonnie Smith isn’t the reason they lost. He wasn’t fooled by Knoblauch. Look closer at where he’s looking. It’s not at Knoblauch. It’s into the outfield. Because he knows who’s out there. It’s Kirby Puckett. That man had an absolute CANNON for an arm. You try scoring on him, he’ll make you live to regret it. And at that point, there’s no way to know for sure if he’s not going to get to the ball. He certainly got to one the night before. And the Braves had second and third with nobody out and still didn’t score. Ron Gant hit a weak grounder to Hrbek and then after Justice was intentionally walked, Sid Bream hit into a double play. THAT was the reason the Braves lost. Brian Harper, the Twins catcher at the time, even said it wasn’t the infielders who Smith was looking at.
why is jack morris not in the hall of fame? win a world series with three different teams: Andre Dawson is a joke. He went to one post-season in 1989, and giants whipped them in NLCS!
