Ok, because this is the second time we discuss about the First Order and the Resistance and the why's of it all. Here is what the tie-in books tells us.
    - Both the First Order and the Resistance are paramilitary organizations. So, yes, the First Order is smaller than the Empire.
    - The First Order's army is Hux's and most of the technology is repurposed Imperial tech.
    - The new Republic never really took off the way it was pre-empire. There were a lot of people and systems that were perfectly fine with an Empire.
    - Leia got kicked out of the senate because some members of the First Order in the senate spread the "rumor" that she was Vader's daughter. Upon realizing that the threat of the First Order was getting increasingly dangerous, she creates a "Resistance" force to push those advances back. That is not backed by the Senate or the Republic AT ALL.
I hope someone from KF reads this and it explains it somehow.

Thunder025 Star Wars is no longer a movie franchise. It is a multi media venture. The entire canon story stretches across movies, tv shows, novels, comics and video games. I agree there are things in the books that explain things that could have had a throw away line in the movies.
Like Rey having a flight simulator program that she played with for years when she wasn’t scavenging being the reason she knows how to fly. All they needed was one short scene of her playing with it to sell it.

i would not be so hard on this movie if it was like Rogue One or Solo and a side story but this is the 2nd to the last episode in this series and it dropped the ball in so many places. For me the worst offense that this movie made was it took all the tension and stakes away from the series by ruining the bad guys. The mistake was watering down Hucks to a slap stick comedy character, killing off Snoke after doing nothing with him, and leaving us with a twice defeated and a humiliated Kylo with little motivation beyond wanting to kill his mom, a girl that rejected him and their buddies.

So where are Obi-Wan and Anakin as Force Ghosts when Luke was gonna kill Ben?

  • @vinnybastos
    @vinnybastos 4 ปีที่แล้ว +53

Okay, let's get this out of the way. I don't think TLJ is inconsistent with Luke's character. Think of it like this:
In Luke's lessons to Rey he mentions how the vanity of the Jedi brought upon their downfall in the hands of Darth Sidious, alluding to the fact that it was also Luke's hubris that caused his own errors.
Luke, as we know him in the Original Trilogy, is impulsive, insecure and tempted by the Dark Side of The Force, even though he resists it. However, his father never did resist, only abandoning it in his final moments. Luke knows the Dark Side is immensely destructive, having turned his father, a promising Jedi, into a mass murdering monster that struck fear throughout the galaxy.
Having bested the Sith, a slightly older Luke finds himself in a position of power, The legendary Last Jedi, tasked with creating a new Jedi Order.
Enter his greatest challenge yet: Ben Solo. His nephew, filled with great, raw power and already in his infancy showing a predilection towards the Dark Side, one much greater than Luke's. A blood relative who shows all the tendencies of a young Vader, the same Vader that tore the galaxy apart.
But his sister and his best friend trusted him with Ben because they couldn't handle him anymore. So it's up to Luke Skywalker, legendary Jedi Master, to guide this boy toward the light. However, the challenge was too great for Luke, who is basically a self-taught Jedi that has already shown a weakness for the Dark Side, only having backed away from it in the last minute, when he was about to murder his own father.
And once more, when going to Ben's tent to assess how deep was the darkness inside the boy's heart, the Dark Side in Luke shows itself. In a fleeting flash of pure instinct, as Luke sees the boundless pit of hatred and despair inside Ben, he feels fear for what he might become. In a moment of weakness he lights his saber and thinks that he could just end it all right there, never allowing for Ben's viciousness to truly blossom.
And almost as quickly he stops himself. But it's too late. The grave mistake was made and all was lost.
And that mistake tore Luke apart. Thanks to his weakness, his insecurity and his vanity, The New Jedi Order is over, half his students are dead and half are gone. All because he couldn't contain the dark impulses inside himself.
So he is now a broken man, who abandoned his life, his friends and his religion. Just like Yoda, when confronted with his failings, he exiles himself. And by renouncing the Force and vowing to never approach it again, Luke becomes just a man, waiting for death.
But truthfully, in his heart, he doesn't really lose all hope. He still kept his X-Wing, he didn't kill himself and he doesn't burn the Sacred Jedi Texts. A part of him still thinks there might be hope. Like in Cast Away, he keeps on surviving until the day the sea brings him a sail. Rey.
But even then it's crazy to think that he can stand alone against the entire army of the First Order. He is just one person. A failure in his own eyes. But like Leia says, fighting is not about just blowing stuff up. It's also about being a good leader, an inspiration.
The Galaxy that has forsaken Leia and the Resistance needs a dramatic example to shake them out of apathy and that couldn't be achieved as a man. As a man, Luke is flesh and blood, he can fail, he can be destroyed; but as a symbol he can be infallible, incorruptible, everlasting.
So he doesn't go to Crait as a man, but as Luke Skywalker, Jedi Master. He accepts that his role as a Legend is much greater than himself, seeing as it was his legend that inspired Rey and so many others across the Galaxy.
And with a single, calculated act, Luke shows everyone that the Galaxy's fearsome enemy isn't invincible. And by doing so he keeps the spark of the Rebellion alive, inspiring countless others across the Galaxy with the story of what happened that day, when one single Jedi faced down the Whole First Order, with nothing but a Lightsaber (or a Laser Sword) in his hand.
And like Obi-Wan, after his job is done, he vanishes, becoming one with the Force.

I have a different take on the Prequel and Sequel Trilogy. I think the Prequels are bad standalone movies but good Saga movies. The Sequel Trilogy are good standalone movies, but bad Saga movies. The Prequels work when you take a step back and look at them from a big picture perspective, but they are plaqued by countless execution problems. The Sequel Trilogy movies don’t work when you look at them from a big picture perspective but they are fine when you look at them on their own merit.

So let's break down a couple of these points for people who don't understand how Star Wars works.
    1. *Why can't the First Order can't jump in front of the Resistance ships?* Because although you can jump to lightspeed whenever, you'll most likely die like Holdo. In Star Wars, faster than light travel is performed along already charted hyperspace routes, like space highways, and nowhere else. Short hyperspace hops just aren't a thing you do.
    2. *Why don't they call in more ships?* Because it would take longer for them to get there than it takes for the Resistance to run out of fuel. Also it's pointless since they already know they're going to catch them in a few hours.
    3. *Why didn't the eagles fly the ring to Mordor?* I know this isn't Star Wars related, but still, ya'll forget about the flying Nazgûl? Also, even if this wasn't a stupid plan that basically paints a giant target on the ring telling Sauron exactly where it is, the eagles aren't real eagles. They're Maiar spirits just like Gandalf, and are prohibited by Manwë, the leader of the gods, from interfering in mortal affairs. Gandalf himself was not allowed to do anything but offer sage advice until he came back as Gandalf the White and was allowed to confront Sauron directly.
    4. *Why won't Snoke just kill people from a distance?* Many Jedi powers doesn't work unless the force user can see their target. As long as the Resistance doesn't pick up his phonecall they're good.
Not so much an answer to a question as a comment. The Empire were not the Nazis, the Empire are the US. Star Wars is a Vietnam protest. This is straight from George Lucas himself, so don't even @ me.
    5. *Why are they the Resistance and not the Rebellion?* They're completely different organisations. The Rebel Alliance, formally the Alliance to Restore the Republic was formed by Bail Organa and Mon Mothma, and was reorganized into the New Republic after the Battle of Endor. Then the First Order started making moves, but the New Republic wasn't overly concerned and thought it was an exaggerated threat by war-hawks like Leia, so she went and formed her own military based on the Alliance, and that's the Resistance. They are far smaller than the Rebel Alliance was, and have basically no resources.
    6. Admiral Holdo. Let's talk a bit about who she is. She was basically a politician who joined the Alliance and once when she was put in charge because everyone else had died, she came up with a plan so dumb, it actually worked. This earned her a reputation as a master strategist and she was promoted to captain. Rebels amirite? ;D She was also friends with Leia and when Holdo joined the Resistance she got the title of Vice Admiral. No conflict of interest here, b0ss. Nepotism, what even is that? Sounds like a Sith Lord to me. >_>
Most things in Star Wars make sense once you realise that the Rebels/Resistance are a bunch of incompetent nobodies who have no formal military training. They do stupid shit because they're stupid, and the only reason they win anything ever is because the Force wills it, all for the sake of "balance".

It depends, doesn't it? Saying you don't like something, and saying that something is bad are two very different things. And I think the reason why they use "different" instead of bad is because they don't think it's bad, they just don't like it. There is no Star Wars movie like TLJ, and while that may not be what fans wanted, it's still a well made movie that a lot of people like (and quite a few dislike) because it does things differently, but not necessarily "badly"

Robert Rees I haven’t looked into it at all about any theories but Anakin’s light saber there makes no sense. Makes total sense that he’d have projected himself younger as Kylo remembered him to invoke an emotional response but Ren would’ve known Luke with the green saber. Ren would’ve know that Anakin’s saber was destroyed in the Throne room. I’ll never understand this bit.

What Barrett says at the end is true and I wished he'd felt more confident in what he was saying. Finn absolutely has an arc in this movie; he only cared about Rey in TFA and at the beginning of this, showed that he only cared about Rey when he tries to abandon everyone to go to her. At the end, he tries to sacrifice himself for the Rebellion. He goes from abandoning everyone to trying to die for everyone (which he should've). A lot of the character motivations and arcs in this movie are great. There's definitely a lot of dumb things that happen, but there's a lot of good in it as well.

either split the rebels up into those 3 ships and go to light speed in three different directions . they could only chase down one and two would get away.

if they can go light speed and take out ships why not when their ships are near out of gas don't they light speed into the first order and thus let them get away

    • @thejediofchicago6580
      @thejediofchicago6580 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Yes and no. JJ did have Luke on Ahch-To, that is correct, but we don't know the reasons why Luke had gone and stayed there until TLJ. And that has always been my biggest issue with TLJ and Luke's character in the film.
We get two lines from Han in TFA about Luke, one was about how Luke had an apprentice that turned against him, and he felt responsible, and then the line about 'the people who knew him best thought he went in search of first Jedi Temple'. That leaves it open.
With hindsight, and how JJ 'said' that the plan was always to bring Palpatine back, I wonder if JJ had planned it out that Luke had seen or sensed Palpatine's return, and had gone in search of first Jedi Temple in hopes of finding out how Palpatine could have done so. And that is why he is on Ahch-To, not because Luke wants to die all alone.

    • @Kotsoros37
      @Kotsoros37 4 ปีที่แล้ว

@@thejediofchicago6580 true that could have also been a more interesting way to do it, but I always saw Lukes destiny as redeeming Anakin , so after that I can see how is lack of training and teaching cause him insecurity and caused him to think his power only made things worst by training people who he cannot control. Luke has the potential and the great power in the force but his insecurities, which he also had in the original movies have clouded him once again, which is why Yoda has to once again set him straight at the end. Obviously this could have been done much earlier on, however if they're going with destinies it can be argued that it was Rey's destiny to kick this all on motion. Anyway what's done is done lol, it would have been better if the end of the saga was just 6, but I can live with what we got. I'm excited to see what they do outside the Skywalker saga, and hopefully they really take Filonis input seriously because he really gets star wars in a way George initially did. Cheers!

I was afraid you wouldn't give this movie a proper shot and instead, even if you hated it at first, you've been willing to look at the positives of it. I'm rewatching the movies lately and something I noticed about the so called marry poppins scene.
If you watch the fire in the background of the shot you can see that the long shot on Leia's face is in slomo, so really she wasn't out there as long as it seemed lile she was.
Also because of how physics works if someone in empty space were to pull an object with much more mass the object will not come towards the person, the person would fly towards the object, in that way this scene is much more scientifically accurate than basically all of the space battles in any star wars movies.
Also if the bombers were in sub orbit the bombs would absolutely drop.
Also how the fuck does del toro know holdo's plan? Fin and rose didn't even know it.

Visually it's absolutely a stunning film but there are so many questionable character arcs, plot holes and overall bad writing which results in a forgettable movie, ala the majority of the prequels.

Holdo explains why she won’t tell Poe the plan. He’s a hotheaded, recently demoted asshat. If shit didn’t go wrong her plan would have worked. Leaders don't have to tell their plan to every underling in real life. Only with hindsight people don't like that she didn't tell Poe.
Ackbar dying off screen isn't a plot hole either. That's just something you don't like and the only reason you don't like it is because he's a meme because, like Barrett said, he's only been on screen for 6 minutes prior to this. This is another example of expectations and personal biasisms getting in the way of your enjoyment.
Coincidence is a massive part of Star Wars but instead it's called the force. The force guides this stuff all the time in very coincidental ways.
I don't understand the hate for this movie in regards to it ruining Luke's character. That was set up in The Force Awakens by Han. If anything you should be mad at that movie. Not this one.
Saying Snoke is like Phasma and Boba Fett because he doesn't have a backstory while The Emperor didn't have a back story for 30 years makes no sense. Who was the Emperor? Why did he look like that? Why was in power? You never got to know until they made the prequels.

For me the force was always "grey" the same way nature is. Death and destruction being necessary to life. It's people who are good or evil in star wars. I,ve always interpreted it as people using it badly one way or another. People being repsonible for its abuses. The Force itself being balance or there'd eventually be a wiping out of Sith or Jedi but dark side always returns and good side always returns as tho trying to balance the equation.

Guys, Admiral Holdo didn't need to disclose her plan to ANYONE! She was the commander. She issues orders, soldiers follow orders. That's it! Poe, who was just demoted for disobeying a direct order had no right to demand that info from her. He followed it up by undermining her mission! In war his actions should have resulted in him having his commission stripped, and being jailed. In the US the Uniform Code of Military Justice would have justified executing him on the spot.

There are plenty of holes in the other SW films that get poked by fans (famously the Luke and Leia relationship) but that is understood because most of those issues were due to the story not being completed. Many issues with the Sequel trilogy come from the fact that they are acting like it is a brand new trilogy nearly completely separate from the previous six films with only familiar characters connecting them.
