The 90s was arguably the best decade in open wheel racing. So many big names and great races in both F1 and Indy/CART, with spectacular, mean ass cars screaming down the track. That was racing.
Hats off to a key race member my compliments to announcer Paul Page through his decades of knowledgeable enthusiasm and his compassion on Moore and Kalitta crash victims all forms of racing and he has fit in and delivered...Thanks Paul
What is interesting is that people from a U.K. Or European f1 background like me and people from a U.S Indy background both idolize the early-mid 90s for quality. Both sports were epically good. I think we took them slightly for granted at the time. What's interesting is that people on both sides of the pond complain about what our sports have become today.
I miss the sound of 2.65L V8s. The Ford-Cosworths, Hondas, Ilmor-Mercedes, etc. all sounded different. The perfect combination of high RPMs and low-bore roar. I miss seeing all the combos... Lola/Ford-Cosworth/Goodyear, Reynard/Honda/Firestone, Penske/Mercedes/Goodyear...hell even the Eagle/Toyota/Goodyear cars...
5 more days....I can't wait! Last year I went to my 1st Indy 500 and I'll never miss another. I can't believe I waited so long to go one (actually it was fear of rain), but it's worth the risk.
It's time for the 500 to become to legend, the legacy it's always been. It's time to give the drivers of our time the chance to become the future for younger generations. We'll never know what Andretti, Vasser, Moore, Zanardi and countless others could have accomplished. But with the new age ahead of us. We'll hope to see legends born, before our eyes Indy for ever.
Of the Delta Force intros, this one is my favorite. I'm also working on a similar video. This one celebrates 100 years of American Racing. My version will be celebrating 100 years at the Brickyard in 2009, A 100 year anniversary in 2011, and the 100th Running of the 500 in 2016. The hard part, finding out where I can get the music.
I was fortunate enough to get his sig on one of my illustrations I made in high school at Pole Day 95. I screamed out of the house when he crossed the line...What a great day!
You're right. I was sitting in section H the past 2 years and it totally sucks to see them crawling down pit lane obeying a speed limit. Guys like Tom Sneva, Gordon Johncock and Danny Ongasis were brilliant at roaring down pit lane.
1995: 100 years ago, America's racers chased the Vanderbuilt Cup. 2011: 100 years ago, America's racers began chasing the glory which we simply now call, "THE BRICKYARD!" May 29th, 2011 cannot get here fast enough.
Personally the IRL vs Champ Car to me is the same as NY Mets vs NY Yankees, Chicago Cubs vs Chicago White Sox and SF Giants vs LA Dodgers to name a few rivalries. Each has their fans and are passionate about them. Each team's fans gets on the other team's fans for rooting for the wrong side.
Except those teams always had the opportunity to play each other on the biggest stage in the World Series. Tony George made it neigh impossible for Andretti, Zanardi, Vasser, Moore, etc. to do so at Indy. FTG.
I don't care what people's impression of Paul Page is, but, Paul Page belongs up in the booth at Indianapolis on the Sunday before Memorial Day. Paul Page IS the VOICE OF THE INDIANAPOLIS 500!!!
Ah yes, the Delta Force music, a classic. ABC used it from 1988 to 1995. But fyi, they used it another time. The Inaugural Brickyard 400. I'm working on getting it posted. Some may not be NASCAR fans, but the music and intro is still cool.
Lucky man. I was VERY lucky and got to see the '07 race and got pit access to boot. It was a short race to rain but a dream come true. And I got to kiss the bricks. I wept openly. :-) This year I went to Long Beach and will probably go to Infineon, but as it's the only two west coast stops, that will probably be it.
Right after Mary Hulman George delivers the 4 words that we wait for year after year.... Nothing would sound better on the pace laps building up the anticipation!
It's May boys and girls! On May 26, we will see the REAL great American race, the 108th running of the Indianapolis 500...there be thrills, danger, and speeds that only the most skilled and brave men and women can handle!
I am trying to but my analog capture device is not letting me. The computer recognizes the capture device but none of the video/audio input. It is really frustrating. I enjoy that race just as much as you probably do.
That is a brilliant idea!!! I was thinking about creating a montage like that but making my own voice over. Just using race calls might be a better idea. Thanks for the inspiration.
Where do I sign to get that music played right after the command to start engines... IMAGINE HEARING THIS ON THE PARADE LAPS TURNED UP FULL BLAST ON THE PA!!!
DCTib he was right, considering the comment was 4 years ago. Page DID return to the IMS radio network and did the 14 and 15 500s IIRC. He even brought back the Delta Force intro.
There have been Indy 500s since '95. I know what you mean (it's not the same), but it's not like the 500 disappeared. I do hope for a unified Indy someday.
I have the CD; special ordered it from Denmark on eBay. Of late, I've been considering starting making free copies for people who might want it, to try to create a grassroots campaign to get them to put it up annually on the PA system itself. I.e., I don't want copyright infringement or any of that crap, but the music is SO AWESOME...et al.
I wonder what music was played when they were announcing the starting field that year. I think it's as cool as the Delta Force theme. I know the music played during the unveiling of the starting field was used for the '92 & '94 season as well. Does anybody know what that music is?
Or, in turn...they wanted to mass-produce "close, exciting racing"...without paying attention to the fact that nothing dulls the edge of anything like oversaturation. In the words of Bill Watterson, through his character of Calvin, al la Calvin & Hobbes, their attitude is: "What's the good of originality if you can't crank it out?" Either way, though...it is still Indy. Wheldon proved you could utterly dominate in 2006...and that race ended with the old addage, "It ain't over until..."
I still can't believe that despite winning Indy in 92 and 94, Al Unser, Jr did not qualify to make the race. How do you shut out the defending champion?
Everyone who reads this needs to start emailing ABC Sports/ESPN, and tell them to play Delta Force...heck, even without any voiceover at all, except maybe the race calls as they happened live. Just let the images tell the story: "WELCOME BACK...TO THE 500."
@pitts40 And he's been back there, on the IMSRN, the last two years, right beside Mike King and Donald Davidson...keeping Mike reminded of the fact that this race is never over until it is over.
It's exactly the kind of comments posted here hating one side or the other (though mostly CART fans despising IRL) that encourages the split to continue...oval fans HATING road courses, road course fans HATING ovals. Beam out of your own eye, I would say.
Some called in the "Indy 505" cause Jacques got penalized 2 laps (5 miles) for something I forgot, but he won anyway. He woulda been 2 laps ahead if he hadn't had the penalty. I recorded every race since 1984. I also have the 1982 race, but missed the 1983 race cause I forgot to set the timer to record it when I went to the US Festival that Sunday, lol.
The '96 cars outpaced them. If leaving politics completely out of it, the actual TECH of the '96 teams was probably superior. Would that they could bring back both options on engines, natural or turbo, and let them have at it; or, for that matter, let them run the new clean and lighter diesel tech, in these corn-oil-powered vehicles days.
Conspiracy theories aside, Tony Stewart was one of those drivers to break the old record, and he's no slouch (or wasn't, when he was in better shape). Maybe George did want to wipe them clean; driving at 236+ is still driving that fast, and it takes someone with "lower guts" to do it.
Well no doubt. Take Andretti, no doubt he would have won the race if the split hadn't happened. 91 great race. 92 dominated, 94. Great race. 95 dominating until he brushed the wall. No doubt he should have won. Vasser, Zanardi were with target competitive cars every year in champ car no doubt they'd be strong at indy. Moore, and the players team were strong in 98 and 99, so I think it's a shame so many talented drivers were robbed. The fans deserved to see the best, so now it's time to give back
what email address did you send it to???? Post it so we can start a modern-day petition. We can tell them that more than 50 people will be watching this year.
Honestly, it comes down to concerns about how expensive it became/is becoming again. And that is a war of philosophies, nothing less. Liberalism, complete with fear of the brutality of real motorsports, is what we have now. Make SURE the Little Guy has something of a chance to succeed, every year. The old (better?) way was to just let life be what it is, and the Little Guy only rarely (but memorably) ever wins. All things being equal, those with more than others have a better shot.
The 90s was arguably the best decade in open wheel racing. So many big names and great races in both F1 and Indy/CART, with spectacular, mean ass cars screaming down the track. That was racing.
In racing period!
JC Denton you are certainly not wrong
Hats off to a key race member my compliments to announcer Paul Page through his decades of knowledgeable enthusiasm and his compassion on Moore and Kalitta crash victims all forms of racing and he has fit in and delivered...Thanks Paul
I watched that live and I still get chills today watching that open. IndyCar misses Paul Page.
Really wish they’d bring back the delta force theme for the intros
What is interesting is that people from a U.K. Or European f1 background like me and people from a U.S Indy background both idolize the early-mid 90s for quality. Both sports were epically good. I think we took them slightly for granted at the time. What's interesting is that people on both sides of the pond complain about what our sports have become today.
I come from the south part of the lake (Brazil), and I Wonder sometimes If we are complaining too much
Last race on ABC this weekend. PLEASE DO THE DELTA FORCE INTRO ONE LAST TIME ABC!!
there cannot be a better intro to any car race or sporting event than the indy 500 intros, and this one is the best of all of them!
This never gets old.
Apex of the sport. This moment.
The end of the golden age of Motorsport, along with WRC, F1, prototype racing and such.
the 90's was the best decade of Indy. Hands down.
The cars that ran in the 1995 Indy 500 were by far the best cars that ever participated in that race, IMO.
Ab-so-lute-ly
this and 92 is my favorites out of the Delta Force intros
For the 1996 U.S. 500, the CART drivers raced for the same Vanderbuilt Cup mentioned during the beginning of the intro.
And that cup would be awarded to the CART drivers champion from the 2000 season until its end.
That scene from 1989 was the best-called moment in the history of television motorsports. 19 years later, and it makes my skin tingle, "sweating ice."
You're welcome. Glad you enjoyed them.
This year's 500 slogan should be "Together as one!"
5 more days....I can't wait! Last year I went to my 1st Indy 500 and I'll never miss another. I can't believe I waited so long to go one (actually it was fear of rain), but it's worth the risk.
Wednesday 27, 2008... The day that fans have been wanting since 1996.
Thanks Kevin and Tony. Bout fricken time!!!
It's time for the 500 to become to legend, the legacy it's always been. It's time to give the drivers of our time the chance to become the future for younger generations.

Indy for ever.
Lots of good fans here! :-) Our family, too. Omlettes and fresh-squeezed OJ during the 500 is our family tradition every Memorial Day weekend.
no omlettes just fresh squeezed oj for me GO-VEGAN!
Come to think of it, I wish I had this more upbeat version of the Delta Force Intro for my intro next year.
This is more Legendary than Delta Force.
not only is it a good tune, but the movie from where the theme comes from is also good (it had Chuck Norris, Lee Marvin, and Robert Forster)
I was fortunate enough to get his sig on one of my illustrations I made in high school at Pole Day 95. I screamed out of the house when he crossed the line...What a great day!
You're right.

Memorial day + Indy 500= priceless

The memories and the awe are still there, no matter what The Fools believe; anyone who saw the finish of the 2006 500 knows it.
Magical intro
it's on DVD. i highly recommend it if you're an action fan
I don't care what people's impression of Paul Page is, but, Paul Page belongs up in the booth at Indianapolis on the Sunday before Memorial Day. Paul Page IS the VOICE OF THE INDIANAPOLIS 500!!!
The "100 years ago" theme will be even more appropriate next year, and in 2011.
"The Indianapolis 500: Celebrating A Centennial At Speed"
Ah yes, the Delta Force music, a classic. ABC used it from 1988 to 1995. But fyi, they used it another time. The Inaugural Brickyard 400. I'm working on getting it posted. Some may not be NASCAR fans, but the music and intro is still cool.
Little Al said it best:"You just don't know what Indy means". Hell Yeah it's time for 96th Running!
the delta force music make my pulse jump 50bpm withing the first 3 seconds. So many great memories associated with that music.
Lucky man.
I was VERY lucky and got to see the '07 race and got pit access to boot. It was a short race to rain but a dream come true. And I got to kiss the bricks. I wept openly. :-)
This year I went to Long Beach and will probably go to Infineon, but as it's the only two west coast stops, that will probably be it.

History and tradition are the hallmarks of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway
It's May boys and girls! On May 26, we will see the REAL great American race, the 108th running of the Indianapolis 500...there be thrills, danger, and speeds that only the most skilled and brave men and women can handle!
500 miles on a sunday afternoon in Indiana
I watch the Delta Force intros at least once a week.
I am trying to but my analog capture device is not letting me. The computer recognizes the capture device but none of the video/audio input. It is really frustrating. I enjoy that race just as much as you probably do.
Family Tradition and History the best weekend of the year.
I cannot wait until the Indy 500
That is a brilliant idea!!!
I was thinking about creating a montage like that but making my own voice over. Just using race calls might be a better idea. Thanks for the inspiration.
Where do I sign to get that music played right after the command to start engines... IMAGINE HEARING THIS ON THE PARADE LAPS TURNED UP FULL BLAST ON THE PA!!!
That was not Champ Car, not yet. It was before the breaking with IRL.
Anyway, Jacques Villeneuve won that race.
Word is that Paul is returning in the near future!
mad122780 Nope. Unless you meant returning to hot dog eating contests.
I agree. Paul Page is awesome, but I just dont understand how he can go from indy cars to drag racing.
I have the CD; special ordered it from Denmark on eBay. Of late, I've been considering starting making free copies for people who might want it, to try to create a grassroots campaign to get them to put it up annually on the PA system itself. I.e., I don't want copyright infringement or any of that crap, but the music is SO AWESOME...et al.
thanks, found it like 4 seconds after i wrote it though
AMEN to that!!! Thanks for the info!!
i love how they used the delta force theme song.
I wonder what music was played when they were announcing the starting field that year. I think it's as cool as the Delta Force theme. I know the music played during the unveiling of the starting field was used for the '92 & '94 season as well. Does anybody know what that music is?

Agreed.
Oh, and while we're at it, bring back Bobby Unser as well...
does anyone know what the name or who plays the music in the background? This music gives me the biggest RUSH of any when it comes to IndyCar racing!
I still can't believe that despite winning Indy in 92 and 94, Al Unser, Jr did not qualify to make the race. How do you shut out the defending champion?
anyone know if the music has an official name, would love to download it. they need to bring it back to indy 500 preraces

Well, to be fair, that was because George wanted to wipe clean any of the pre-1995 records.
its the theme song to the movie Delta Force.
Bring Back: Delta Force, Paul Page, Turbos, and awesome camera angles like :01-3:12-4:01!!
CART PPG INDYCAR AMERICA!!!!!
I just emailed them requesting the music.
@pitts40 And he's been back there, on the IMSRN, the last two years, right beside Mike King and Donald Davidson...keeping Mike reminded of the fact that this race is never over until it is over.
Yes. Go Champ Car!
Wintergreen actually won a real Kentucky Derby, when it was a minor race for 25 years...and Franchitti won a real Indy 500.

Do you have the 2001 & 2005 intro's?

How do torrents work? I keep on hearing about them but I'm not sure about how to get them.
I may have the 2001 but not the 2005.
Fine. Bring Page back.
Delta Force (or, The Indianapolis 500 Theme Song) should be played on the friggin' PA system, if it has to be.
I meant to say Wednesday, February 27, 2008.
1987 Start by that clip.
Turbo's will be back soon, at least it'll go up since the merger.
whats the song on this
delta force alan silvestri
+MrCuppy3 Theme song from movie Delta Force

Didn't Villenueve win this one?
Yes. In his last year before joining F1.
YES!
Yes
Goodyear passed the pacecar and villeneuve won because of that
Essa musica devia ser tema oficial da IRL
what email address did you send it to???? Post it so we can start a modern-day petition. We can tell them that more than 50 people will be watching this year.
Great footage of Duane Sweeney waving the green flags.
Yes that series rocks to KISS! I am Mindy!

Chuck Norris would win with one arm tied behind his back!
Why don't you just get "I Am Mindy" instead. That way Tony George can pay for his 'Revenue Sharing' plan.
Only 100 days to go...
@pennst24
Yup
