Many people may do it once, just out of hope, but then get scammed. Many are old and trust people that lie and tell them they didn't need to register, etc., Many are desperately broke and vulnerable to scams. SO many reasons, it's not just black and white. Not simple. very sad.

They kept insisting i won money. I hung up.
A Playboy center fold contacted me on Twitter out of the blue...said she wanted to marry me and have my baby....all I had to do was spend 100k for a bus ticket for her to move to me....seems legit....

Dealing with this with my MIL. $100K so far. We can't convince her that it's a scam. Just found out from the bank that she's also been laundering money for the scammers by receiving checks in the mail and sending cash across state lines. Watch your elderly family members bank accounts.

Someone tried this stunt with me on Twitter!! They claimed that they won Powerball,and wanted my email address and phone number so they could have an FedEx agent contact me!! I gave them my street address and name through Twitter messages,and they insisted that they wanted my phone number and email address so an FedEx agent could contact me!! I blocked them on Twitter and sent a spam/scam report to Twitter.
that's the classic grant scam... you have to pay a "fee" for getting your money.. they're nigerians.

I had a call a few months ago that went something like this.... Hello Mrs..Bla-Bla-Bla.... This is a call to tell you that you are the proud winner of $300,000.00 dollars in the something, something, lottery. I can't remember the name, and I replied, " Oh, how wonderful, how soon can you send me my money, I am down to my last dollar. I just got evicted for not paying my rent for the last three months, and my car was repossessed. How soon can you send me my money! I want you to send me my winnings right now! Hello? Hello? He hung up on me, imagine that? I couldn't stop laughing for an entire 5 minutes, lol.
