I can't believe any of these still survive! I had one back in the day and really loved it. The Intrepid was my daily driver and being a regional sales manager, this car was ideal. You could set the cruise control at 95 and cover ground in comfort all day long. It was very aerodynamic, so pretty quiet on the road, and the suspension was a good mix of smooth ride with enough sport to handle highway sleepers and back roads at speed. The seats were like big LazyBoys and you had plenty of room for a week on the road making sales calls across several states. I even added a hitch to tow a small utility trailer for house renovations, and even my track-rat Civic.
I ordered my Intrepid R/T on President's Day in 2000. My Intrepid was the 131st one to manufactured. The R/T had the Chrysler 300M drivetrain with one difference--it had a chip that allowed it to run on mid-grade gasoline. The R/T lost about 9 hp because of that. Dodge thought that customers that bought the R/T wouldn't want to spend the money for premium fuel. How wrong the executives at Dodge were! Marketing had it figured out. People bought the R/T because they tired of the "malaise" era. Car & Driver tested one and found it to be a little quicker than the Chrysler's 300M, maybe because of the weight of some luxury items the 300M carried? Dodge made quite a few mistakes when they made the Intrepid R/T. A car that had a 120 mph speedometer in which third gear supposedly topped out at 125 mph. Auto Catalog's performance section for the 2000 R/T had it's top speed as 149 mph but mentioned the speed was limited to 139mph. The R/Ts came with A/S, V speed rated Michelin tires. The V rating's top acceptable speed for a tire is 149 mph. I changed to the Michelin, A/S W rated tire. A W speed rating means the tire will be safe to drive at 168 mph. Trading up also made the car stop faster and maintain traction better because of increased grip. You mentioned brakes. I was just a little disappointed in them even though the brake system was Chrysler's best--it was from the 300M! During a safety inspection the service manager mentioned that I should have the vented rotors changed on the front wheels as they were beginning to rust----before the next inspection the calipers could crush them---really! The car was 5 years old and only had about 40,000 on it. I had bought a new Ram 1500 in may of 2003 that I drove in the winter. The years I drove the R/T in winter I meticulously hosed it off under above and under a with good pressure hose. That included back and forth through the drain holes for doors and so on. The roads weren't treated in those years with the aggressive chemical mix used today. The highly, hygroscopic magnesium added to the "brine" that is sprayed on roads is rusting metal on cars at a highly accelerated pace. Rock salt and gravel was used in the early 2000's. I was thinking--the car was only driven two winters. I asked if it would pass for now. I got a grudging okay and a sticker. I talked with a tech about HAWK pads. He asked what the area I lived in was like. There are children and pets. The HAWK high performance street plus need about a mile to warm up before they braked well--back then--I do not know about now. Formulations change. The HAWK high performance street pads are as good as the OEM pads cold and get better as they warm up. These pads also don't wear on the rotors. Yep! Those. Rotors? ATE rotors, German steel made by BOSCH. They won't rust out or warp if they get really hot--uh huh--Yep, I'll take those. When the Dodge tech next serviced the R/T I told him to take it out, get some speed up and do a panic stop. The W rated Michelins, the ATE rotors and HAWK pads surprised him. He said he never had driven an Intrepid that stopped like that. He said the only thing close by that stops faster was the SRT models on the lot. I had a wheel bearing go bad either side of 20,000 miles maybe. Dodge should have engineered something better, a little more heavy duty maybe, if the bearing was the same as the one fitting all other Intrepids. The Intrepid R/T had the slipperiest body of any American made car in wind tunnel testing. Some of you will remember the Intrepid R/T was the car that Dodge made to return to NASCAR, the Daytona 500 in 2001. When the Charger came along and the Intrepid was dropped from Dodge's lineup the racing teams had maybe two. possibly three years to switch to the new body style. Those that did found that the increased wind resistance the Charger style body had, compared to the Intrepid's slipperiness, coupled with the horsepower limitations imposed by NASCAR made the Charger slower. Some NASCAR teams stayed with the Intrepid body to last year possible. My babied Intrepid R/T --which had Castrol and Purolator Pure One oil filter changes every 1,500 miles had a heart attack at a little over 50,000 miles. The timing belt broke as I was just driving at about the speed limit. Dodge's 3.5 liter is an interference engine, which means if your timing belt breaks, valves hit pistons! I had a Chrysler long block put in my R/T. Another common failure is the steering rack. It is possible that it is just the bushings. I know a mechanic that has used rubber shock absorber bushings to repair that. If R/T badges are all over a car, why set it up to use mid-grade gasoline at the expense of a few horsepower? Why not give it a 140 mph speedometer? I think cars like Camry's had 140 mph speedometers. Not that the customer will drive that fast --but--the manufacturer did set the limit control to 139 mph--duhh? The manufacturer's 139 mph limit control--my insurance company charged me $400 a year for a few years because the R/T was listed as an "intermediate performance vehicle". Maybe tire, brake and rotor upgrades as I did to my Intrepid. The heavy duty struts for the R/T are no longer available but, if you do find some--think--will the seals in the struts still be any good or last if the struts have been on a shelf for 20 years? If you have an Intrepid R/T, just buy some of the best strut packages you can find and enjoy getting some miles out of it. Unfortunately, the Intrepid R/T that returned Dodge to NASCAR isn't a highly sought vehicle by collectors. The Intrepid R/T was a good car for it's time. The 3.5 engine was weak on longevity as it's timing belt was it's Achilles heel. Now the performance of some of the cars today is scary. I'm glad today's "cars" can sort of drive themselves with their computers. A few last thoughts. When I ordered my R/T I requested a leather interior. Leather wasn't listed. My sales lady, a friend made a call to Dodge. Leather wasn't an option on President's Day of 2000. Hmmm--It seems that Dodge had quite a few requests for leather seating. I believe that by early summer of 2000, Dodge was getting so many requests for leather that Dodge relented and made leather an option. If you see a R/T with fabric seating check out the VIN. It may be one of the very early ones like mine. When I ordered my R/T they hadn't even started to make them. I took delivery on April 5th of 2000. A new Intrepid R/T was not to be driven over 50 mph until the car had been driven 500 miles. People probably expected to see a 90 year old driver peering over the wheel when they glanced over as they passed me. Yes--a few honking horns but the gesticulations were rare! Dodge sold the Intrepid R/T to "celebrate" their return to NASCAR--but the buyer can't drive it over 50 mph for the first 500 miles!
I purchased a 2002 R/T new. 244 hp, 250 torque, police chip. 136 mph I have run it on a road course and it handles quite well. Test driver apparently did know know he could manually shift the transmission for max acceleration. I never took it over 100.
I had a 2001 Chrysler Intrepid (Canadian version) with the 2.7L. Only problem I had was at about 90k the water pump started leaking. I caught it right away and had it replaced before water in the oil could do any damage. Was a labor expensive fix though as they had to remove the radiator to get to the front engine cover. Since they already had it apart I just had them replace the timing chain as well. All together for pump+ timing chain + labor cost me something like $1200 if I recall. I traded it in at 107k and it was still running great. Most comfortable driving car I ever owned.
Beautiful car! It looks a lot like mine (same gorgeous "inferno red" paint), but mine is a 2003 SXT with the cloth seats. What a great find! Since buying my Intrepid from my grandparents last fall (it's a multi-generational family hand-me-down), I've become fascinated with the old commuter cars of my childhood and am learning some things about vehicle maintenance/car ownership. Fingers crossed that my Treps lasts another few years with regular upkeep! It's a dream to drive and is wonderfully simple and nostalgic.
Not a bad car, but I would much more recommend something like a BMW 530i/540i, Volvo S60/XC70/S80, Lexus ES300/GS430. Those are safer and more interesting options in my opinion.

The Dodge Intrepid’s engine was mounted longitudinally, Audi-style. Its north-south/longitudinal mounting of the engine, as opposed to the usual east-west/transverse installation typical with front wheel drive cars, allowed Chrysler to lower the hoodline for aerodynamics and looks, made maintenance/servicing simpler, and tightened the car's turning diameter.
According to Car and Driver, the Intrepid R/T could do 0-60 in 7.8 secs while my 2006 Dodge Magnum SXT could do it in 7.5 secs. Sounds about right. The hp was bumped up in the 3.5L. my Magnum had 250 hp, an increase of 8 hp over the R/T. Also my Magnum was RWD so no torque steer off the line and had a 5 speed transmission vs. the 4 speed in the R/T. The R/T had better aerodynamics and was lighter. If they were both going 60 mph on the highway side by side and both hit the throttle, I'm guessing that the R/T would pull ahead because of the lighter weight and better aerodynamics. The Magnum had a 117 mph limiter, the R/T didn't and could hit 139 mph top speed.

The Magnum weighed about 150 lbs more than the Charger because of the extra sheet metal in the rear being a wagon. The Charger R/T (5.7L) weighed about 500lbs more than the Intrepid R/T.
Chrysler used better leather than its competitors. Cadillac leather of this era dries out and cracks, and I’ve saw many Lexus vehicles of the time look like they were owned by Edward Scissorhands

The magnum, 300, and charger were much heavier than the LH sedans they replaced. I remember people saying the 300 with the 2.7 was a total dog.
