  • US President Donald Trump says he plans to introduce 25 percent tariffs on all steel and aluminium entering the United States.
His comments to reporters on board Air Force One on Sunday mark the latest escalation in his trade policy, which has already brought retaliatory tariffs from China. Mr Trump imposed a similar steel and aluminium tax during his first term.

We are trying to be a manufacturer again, why is that so terrible ? We need to be self sufficient and not depend on china for things. That is the point of tariffs in steel, we used to be a powerhouse with steel. Japan just invested 100 billion to get things started up

@@TKX18 He is fooling you. highly developed regions like the USA and West Europe can never again be manufacturing economies. Why? Because wages are simply too high and residents expect a high standard of living. The final product would cost too much. The USA needs to educate parts of their population to get them into the service business instead. But that doesn’t get votes!

Trump's 25% tariffs are called absorption tariffs, where the exporter pays them in order to remain selling in the US market. In his first term he put absorption tariffs on China and they are still paying us billions. These tariffs can't be too high, or the exporter won't be able to absorb them and still make a profit. On 25% many of the foreign steel companies will decide to lower their price 25%, then the US importer will take that savings and pay the tariff, that was indirectly paid by the exporter. If he doesn't absorb the tariff, the foreign exporter will lose his US customer to US steel that doesn't have a tariff. If the foreign company decides not to pay the tariff through absorption, then the US company will buy US steel, which is a win for the US either way.

They can be countered rather easily as reason is given by the US unitary action.
While i would maybe personally go for a 25% export tariff on everything they were putting them on, just so they can't mooch of from us but would feel what it means to not get those products while haven't themselves yet the capacities to produce them. As i see it this is a shakedown to get funds for to pay of their debts and has not so much to do with their own production which is just the reason for his nationalist followers.
The other maybe nicer way is how the Canadans did it, by putting tariffs on products of Trumps supporters and voters in red state. Target the once responsible for him being in that job. That has some zing to it hrhr.

    One question:
will the Americans pay that extra 10% tax to Trump and buy made in China?
Or will they stop buying made in China and make those stuff with their own hands and fill up their own Walmart? Like the MAGA hats, batteries, TVs, Fridges, smartphones, etc?
What happened in 2018 when tariff war started? Did Americans pay that tariff and got toasted with inflation?
That's seven years ago. And you suppose suddenly some miracle happens?
There's nothing but inflation if you have any clear memory through the Pandemic. The fact that Trump restarted his first failure attempt is just pathetic, he has no card in hand.

The idea, from Stephen Miran, chair the Council of Economic Advisers, the promoter of this plan based on tariffs & exchange rates, is that tariffs will be offset by the differential in exchange rates, i.e., a stronger US dollar & weaker currencies of trading partners. Consumers will pay the same or slightly higher prices & the government will pocket the tariffs & benefit from the growing currency spread.

This brings problems for companies selling their products outside the USA.
E.g. BMW exports 60% of the cars they produce in Spartanburg. BMW is by value the biggest US car exporter.
Higher costs for steel and aluminium. And who knows if not also for car components made in Mexico one day.
This makes those cars produced in the USA more expensive. And thus more difficult to sell abroad.
Those tariffs will also destroy manufacturing. Especially in the sectors were the USA is exporting a lot. Like machinery for construction or agriculture. Or the aero industriy.

Why can countries like Australia with higher wages than US workers make steel cheap enough to export to US? Maybe the US steel industry needs to become more efficient. The US has a 22B export surplus to Australia, how sensible is levying more tariffs on imports from countries like Australia when any retaliatory tariffs would hurt US much more. Trump should be asking why US citizens buy imported goods, no doubt they are cheaper, they might also be better than US made or alternatives may not be available. For example Ozempic the drug for example has a huge market in US but is only made in Europe.

US imported most steel from Canada (3.5mtons); Mexico (0.8m tons). Likewise, US imported 4.8 m tons of Aluminum and Canada shipped 1.5m tons, UAE 1m tons. Thus, tariff on steel and aluminum has minimum impact on China.

I want these reporters to describe the exact mechanism that USA tariffs can impact European prices. When we aren't going to pay them on importing America products. You may even see a drop in costs as European importers can haggle lower prices of the sellers are desperate due to loss of sales in the USA market.
By all means the export controls may but tariffs don't mean much at a personal level.
