It’s clearly an inside job and shouldn’t be placed on the customer. Customer service shouldn’t be this hard and it’s ridiculous how they’re handling it. You refund the money, it’s THAT SIMPLE! You don’t tell her it’s her problem. Walmart has more than enough money to reimburse this lady.
This was happening when I worked at a pharmacy. The store isn’t allowed to give the money back and it’s not fair to the customer because it didn’t take months to take their money. The money should be reimbursed immediately. But, we found out that the cards were used prior to distribution to the store locations, and a warehouse employee was responsible. Those cards were pulled immediately.
they will be watching anyone replacing cards from their pockets or taking too many a report said 5k cards were tampered with in a calif episode and drained i think not all werwe drained since they had a photo they would have had to put the tamered cards back in the store and wouldnt have them anymore so maybe it was useless cards and not tampered w and put back yes bottom line the crook can not drain it till its purchased and activated dont undersatnd the different activation numbers she mentions

Be careful people this is nit just happening at Walmart’s but also at Target’s and other store’s. These stores will not refund you or really help you get your money back, work with police to make a arrest . The police from one store said they refused to work with them but the police set up in their store anyway. This led to them seeing a man doing this and they caught him with 5700 cards in his car ,200 was in him in his pockets when he tried to get away in Sacramento California. I do instacart I have tried to warn 10 people this week alone to not buy gift cards that are hanging on all those kiosks at the grocery store or anywhere else. The safest way to do it is to buy it online and have it shipped to their home.
I agree, I would have called the police and insist they investigate. If Walmart refuses, I would make the claim they are hiding something. I am not sure if citizens arrests are valid, but I would hold Walmart accountable as they clearly have something to hide.
@@californiadreamer2580 I suspect someone took two sets of cards, skimming the contents of half the cards and putting them on the other half sets of cards before putting the updated magnetic data back on the shelves. Most likely this still required two parties to make it happen.
All retailers, not just Walmart need to be held responsible and accountable when this happens. The theft of the gift cards with the numbers happened on retailers property and the gift cards are returned back to the retailers property by the theives. Then a customer purchases the gift card and thieves already have the numbers and drains the gift cards. This is fraud and pure evil perpetuated by the retailer.

I purchased a $100.00 Walmart gift card for my mom who lives in another state. Mom called and said there was no money on the card. I fought with the Pensacola, FL. Walmart to no avail. I never got an apology, the money back or any explanation. I don't shop at Walmart and I told all my clients about Walmart's scam.
Due to the nature of gift cards many recipients don't want to go tell the gifter that it was drained. BTW, this is a great way to give a socially obligated gift to someone you don't like. Give them a pre-drained card ;-)

I never received any information or a call-back. Thank you, GOD, it was only $20. These ladies got taken for $800. Disgusting.
My co-workers got together for my birthday and gave me a $200 Visa gift card. They told me to go online and make sure that the amount was correct and it was but when I went to use it a couple of weeks later there was no money on it. It had been completely drained. I called the 1-800 number on the back of the card and I was told by Visa that they would have to investigate it and that I would hear something back by email within a month. I worked at Walmart also for 13 years until 2020. You are right. They would steal when a customer was buying a lot of gift cards for Christmas. That is when we would have to send them to the Money Center. What some cashiers would do is ring up a card just like the one the customer had. They would keep the one with the money on it. We had the head of security at the Walmart I worked at for stealing money from Walmart. He would relieve the girl at night to go on break and lunch. He was doing fake returns and signing her name to the ticket. They sent him to Federal prison. It so stupid, because Associates, Managers and security know we have cameras.@@kaysaylor9483
@trishmeshell191Just busted the card stealing, PIN number stealing thieves here in California , in a major theft ring. They then send money into chinese bank accounts.....now we're getting more illegal Chinese across the border.....with terrorists and a band of criminals.
This was an inside job. I use to love Walmart. I only go when it’s absolutely necessary. They expect you to shop, check yourself out, bag your own groceries, put them in the car and unpack them when you get home. Then treat you like a criminal after You have work for them for free. It makes no sense.
Plus they are selling a lot of items that are lesser quality which is scamming the public. The name brand items you buy at Walmart are not always the same quality as what you buy at other stores. Same with the products sold in Sam's Club. Which is why I don't have a membership anymore.
You mean they won't even put the groceries in your car, then come home with you and take the groceries out of your car and unpack them and put them away????? The horror of it all!!! That is treating you like a criminal.
The self checkout is a joke. 5 people standing around talking until they see you and call you over. If you just walk up to an empty one they get bent. Some at self checkout get mad when you insist on self scanning your only 2 items. Then other cashiers don't pay any attention and expect you to just dissappear.
It's pitiful, there's a scam at every turn. I gave my son a Texas Roadhouse card for a gift. When they had their meal and went to pay with the card, the cashier said it wasn't valid. The truth is, the male cashier pocketed the card himself and later got the value of it in cash from the register. I learned my lesson, no gift cards.

@enagreco3280 I am guessing they are not. The cards are probably being duplicated. That happened to me once with a credit card. I did not lose the card but it was used in a different state. A grocery store picked it up when they tried to charge $500 in food. Then the bank called me. I was shocked cause I had the physical card. The fraud investigator told me it had been duplicated. Walmart makes BILLIONS of dollars every HOUR. If their warehouse employees are stealing gift card numbers, that is their problem, not the customers. They need to issue refunds IMMEDIATELY.
The Walton family are all billionaires. But had to be outed and shamed for underpaying their employees and making them go on welfare so that everyone else could pay for their apartment and food, because they weren’t making enough. Notice: This just happened in Philadelphia at a large retail store (they were Nike gift cards) and two guys were arrested. They are taking gift cards and a skimming device to pull the information off the back of the card then sealing them back up and putting them back on the rack just waiting for someone to purchase them so they can get free merchandise for themselves. These guys were caught because someone noticed an inordinate amount of glue on some of the cards for purchase so the store pulled them. Buyer beware especially this time of the year and shame on the losers at Wal-Mart for not taking care of their customers in the case posted.
Go to the Walmart you bought them from. That is where it happened. The person that you bought them from did a bait and switch. They loaded the cards and then they gave you the empties sitting somewhere close by, keeping the loaded cards. Slight of hand. They then have a relative or friend use the cards so they dont show up on camera using them. I use to work for Walmart. We had more than one employee fired for this scam.
@@spiralrose Trust no one. When buying gift cards, make sure all numbers match both receipt and card BEFORE you leave the register or store. Make sure no other gift cards are close enough to the cashier that they could grab one and switch it. Because that is exactly what happened. The victim needs to see the security footage of the transaction as it took place. Walmart already knows how this happened. Because IT HAPPENS ALL THE TIME.

I agree. It's HOT money. They replace them with fake cards. 1 person caught had over 3 mill in his room. These groups are from overseas. They didn't even catch the people printing these cards yet, it was just a mule.
I don't think that will help. I believe it's an inside job coupled with digital fraud personally. I can say Target handled our situation much better. Still had to wait while they verified everything but got all new giftcards in the mail and had to call them to activate once cards were confirmed again. It was painful but fair.
No, that's not necessarily what happened. It happened to me 2 yrs. ago and people are taking pics of the cards and then put them back in the sleeve and on the display rack. ( Usually it's the front ones). They then go home and go online or keep calling the # on card, until the automated voice says a card has a balance. They then know it was purchased and asap go use it. So by the time the person that was supposed to get it, goes to use it, it's wiped out. This is not New. Those people were doing it before. I'm not buying any gift cards again, that's for sure.

This happened to me after purchasing Walmart gift cards. I called the customer service number for help. I was told they couldn’t do anything for me after purchasing the cards. I kept questioning how this would be possible. Luckily I hadn’t tossed the receipts. The transactions were traced and I got reimbursed with replacement gift cards. I don’t do gift cards anymore.
It's not specific to a single retailer. Any retailer that sells cards will have gift cards altered by thieves. Walmart is just the most popular location to shop. I know how this scam is done. I've had training on it.
This was clearly an inside job. They activated the cards, then handed you brand new unactivated cards. You got 1 activated card because they probably weren't clever enough to swap out all 4 without you noticing. They then gave you all of the activation codes. Then they, or an accomplice, took the activated cards to another Walmart and used them to buy other gift cards. That should all be on video. The fact that the employee at the other Walmart wouldn't do anything about it or even talk to you indicates they are probably in on it.

Don't ever buy gift cards from Walmart !! They will never give you money back if the card is drained. But they will call the police on someone that walked out with a 50 cent pack of gum that wasn't scanned properly at self checkout. But don't go after the individuals that are stealing money off of gift cards purchased by their patrons. Says a lot. I will never shop there again.
I was in my local Walmart last month, and I saw two men take a bunch of gift cards and walked away. They came back a few minutes later and put them back on the shelf. I didn't know this was happening until now. That's horrible.
But they can read the strip on the back, catalog that pattern and then wait till someone activates them with cash....then go out with duplicate cards they have made with that strip read. Basically the cards need to be at the MoneyCenter only which prevents anything but an employee theft....however the whole business of gift cards is based on impulse buy...so they want them hanging there. That's why phone cards use a scratch covered code instead of strip. If they used a strip then that is another easy theft by reading the code and just waiting for someone to purchase.
Alternately the money center could put the signal pattern on the card, with the cards hanging at the register or endcap being blank tape. Once a flaw in a system is found, thieves will use it and tell others how.

Scammer in California was found with a ton of gift cards in their car. The scammer was traveling to different cities, changing out gift cards to do this exact thing. I think stores should start locking up gift cards or buy them online from the actual card issuer. It could be an inside job. However, if it was at 3 Walmarts, it sounds like someone is going around doing this like the recent guy caught in CA.
Some of those were inside jobs too. Bcse saw one where the teller would called their friend to let them know the customer made a withdrawal. Lot of times businesses will clam up when they k ow it's an employee bcse they can be sued.
As a former wal mart employee you will NEVER get help from the store manager. If you want to get your money back, u need to hire an attorney so they can take this issue to corporate in Bentonville, Arkansa. Ever since Mr Sam Walton passed away, Wal Mart has become a major drama. Let me add this from a review: 2 years ago Walmart refuses to return a Christmas gift for a 98 year old lady. Manger Mike at Walmart 35404 US Hwy 19 N, Palm Harbor, FL 34684 after over an hour of explaining a gift card is fine...says that is no longer available.. “call the 800 number and they can assist you” However, he is not interested in taking care of this matter at the store level. So much for Walmart customer service.

Her response from her Wal-Mart store doesn't surprise me. I don't think they care. Happened to me at a Kroger store. Bought a Little Caesars pizza gift card at Kroger. They refused to help me as well. When family went to use it, it had been hacked and used. Little Caesars pizza also didn't care any more than Kroger and we were out $. One company loves to blame the other. I have never bought gift cards ever again. Never got my money replaced either.

@@calamity0.onope, I have had the same problem, some one tears a corner to see if there is cash in it, I stoped sending cards in their original envelopes after that, I get the post office padded ones now, I would rather pay full price for the stamp that pay the half price Christmas stamps here in Australia, at least I know that what I send gets there. Not all posties who deliver your mail are honest. I had the post office arrive on my door with 6 months worth of mail that I had written off as lost, their guy took all the mail home once he picked it and just drove home with it all and never delivered any of it, it took them 6 months to figure out that he was collecting his paycheque without doing the job. 6 months of complaints from people like me who had not received any of their parcels or letters. I had to contact all the companies who had replaced or refunded the goods that had gone missing in that 6 months. I’m just lucky they guy never opened a single one of the mail, when he wad asked why he kept them but did not open them, he said it’s against the law to open someone else’s mail 🤔🤔but it was okay to steel from the company his wages each week and not deliver the mail. Talk about twisted idiot.
This apparently has been happening for a while. It happened to my neighbor last Christmas and Walmart had basically the same response, none. They also said there was nothing they could do….. obviously, it’s a big inside job.
People need to be out protesting telling people the store sell fake gift card and will not reimburse you. Basically it's going to cost the store a lot more than it is going to be to just reimburse you if you can stop just a few shoppers. I do not know why people shop there anyway. People need to stop being sheep and use their rights. My guess other would join you. As long as you are on a public side walk they can do nothing and neither can the cop when the store tries to get you to move on. Also if you can get some people out there then call the press about a story. That will make sure the store gets noticed and not in a good way.
The way Walmart act like Fort Knox when it come to scanning correct items at self check out and presenting the receipt 🧾 at the door, you'd think they'd be just as hard on their thieving employees.
I use to work retail. I caught a guy once who had taken a hand full of gift cards, took them to the back of the store and was taking pictures of the cards. I informed him that the cards needed to stay up front. I took them and destroyed them. So, I'm sure that he was going to put them back on the rack and once they were purchased and activated...boom. it is my opinion that this is a huge scam that happens frequently.
But they fixed that several years ago. They now cover up the activation numbers and you have to scratch them off so that can't be done that way. So I do not know how they are doing this now.
This is obviously a terrible precedent. Wal Mart has to be made responsible. I wouldn't be surprised if a great attorney would do this pro bono. Thank you for informing us.
Everyone that has been scammed by Walmart should all come together so we can all get our money back. This is happening in many cases. See some below: 1. Non deliverable items 2. Same thing happened to me. I live in NC..I bought my daughter a $150 gift card for her birthday back in March from a grocery store. I gave the card directly to my daughter after activating it and a few minutes later she told me that when she went to use it the money was gone. Somehow they drain off everything but $1.00 to avoid detection. Someone in Oklahoma used it to pay their electric bill and something else, I forget.. Trying to get your money back is a long shot. It's a cold hearted, ruthless scam and it needs to be addressed.

Lesson: Always check the card against the activation receipt before you leave the store.
This is happening to a lot of people. Thousands upon thousands of people. Just at the grocery store I work several people have been victim. And they won't even tip you for checking out and bagging the products, taking them to the car.

The self checkout is a joke. 5 people standing around talking until they see you and call you over. If you just walk up to an empty one they get bent.
Some at self checkout get mad when you insist on self scanning your only 2 items. Then other cashiers don't pay any attention and expect you to just dissappear.

This lady is absolutely 100% correct. Walmart does not take care of the customer.
Sad to say she probably will never see the store manager face-to-face to resolve this situation.
Walmart makes BILLIONS of dollars every HOUR. If their warehouse employees are stealing gift card numbers, that is their problem, not the customers. They need to issue refunds IMMEDIATELY.
But they also have accounts payable & Shrinkage plus payroll. So it aint billions of dollars an hour.😂😂😂
Go online and see who is really stealing the money off the cards. I don’t know why you think it’s warehouse workers doing it.
The Walton family are all billionaires. But had to be outed and shamed for underpaying their employees and making them go on welfare so that everyone else could pay for their apartment and food, because they weren’t making enough. Now they had to raise the wages but it’s still really low compared to what people need. USA is a Joke.
Its not billions of dollars an hour. They have expenses, stock holders etc.
@@alittlewheiser521because they automatically think it's the low wage scum that work for Walmart. It couldn't be scammers, fishers, hackers, etc. Of course it's automatically someone that works there. You can't be mad at either side for being skeptical of the other in this situation.
This Woman is a class act!Thank you for informing the public of these gift card scams 🙏 God bless you🙏
Notice: This just happened in Philadelphia at a large retail store (they were Nike gift cards) and two guys were arrested.
That is so evil… I hope whomever did that to this poor lady, loses everyone they love and everything they own. I absolutely loathe thieves
@@spiralrose Trust no one. When buying gift cards, make sure all numbers match both receipt and card BEFORE you leave the register or store. Make a point to let them know you are watching their every move. And keep your eye on the thieving cashier you buy them from. Because thats who did it. Look at the checkout lane. Make sure no other gift cards are close enough to the cashier that they could grab one and switch it. Because that is exactly what happened. The victim needs to see the security footage of the transaction as it took place. Walmart already knows how this happened. Because IT HAPPENS ALL THE TIME.
Yep
This is the first explanation I've read that makes sense and is plausible. Thanks.
The person she spoke to is probably in on it, that's why they wouldn't call the store manager about such a serious issue. I would call or e-mail them with that information. Yup happened to me last year at Target, I’m feeling depressed because it was the first time I gifted my relatives but now this ruins the purpose of gift cards and unfortunately they’re not doing anything about it.
The cards should NOT be accessible to the public!
Keep them behind a counter, in a secure location!

Agree 100%!!
Magnetic strip theft or copying. Hiding them won't help. 🤷
Who ever scanned the card did not do their job correctly. Walmart is responsible for their actions. SUE.

Same on my end. Ironically, the purchase was made at Walmart.
It's not specific to a single retailer. Any retailer that sells cards will have gift cards altered by thieves. Walmart is just the most popular location to shop. I know how this scam is done. I've had training on it.
And I'm fairly sure Walmart has insurance for this type of thing and they should definitely give her money back
This was clearly an inside job.

I was in my local Walmart last month, and I saw two men take a bunch of gift cards and walked away. They came back a few minutes later and put them back on the shelf. I didn't know this was happening until now. That's horrible.
Because the cards are no good until someone adds money to them
But they can read the strip on the back, catalog that pattern and then wait till someone activates them with cash....then go out with duplicate cards they have made with that strip read.

@stickney43The video is irrelevant because walmart doesn't care.
I had something similar to happen at a Walgreens. Three of five my cards were switched and the ones activated were still at the store. The store was very kind but thorough in finding out what happened. They were able to find the activated cards and allow me to return the useless cards. Lesson: Always check the card against the activation receipt before you leave the store.
This is happening to a lot of people. Thousands upon thousands of people. Just at the grocery store I work several people have been victim. It happens with Apple, target, and even with prepaid visa cards. With the apple cards you can tell because they are putting tape over the code on the back that you can actually see through. We took all of our apple cards off of the shelf.
It is so humiliating to attempt to check out with much needed groceries only to discover the gift card is rejected with a zero balance. When it happened to me, I felt as if the employee thought I was trying to scam her by emptying the card and attempting to reuse the card.
Just remember ... cash folks, and make sure you don't take that electronic coin
