yeah for sure. I quit believing in the bible, but kept the interest in the history and culture that brought it into existence (basically an interest in late bronze and early Iron Age Near East and Mesopotamia) and even after years of consuming lay content on the subject from experts like these I'm astounded most times at just how little I've learned when I hear one of these scholars speak. How anyone could think they could 'know' what the bible says or the history of the area by cherry picking a few favorite bible stories is beyond me.
44:40 I had an eastern religions professor in college who was an Anglican minister... and was a Jesus mythicist. Yes, you read that right. I’m getting tired of the complaint that a documentary is bad/propaganda because it only gives one side or has an opinion. It’s not a debate, it’s a documentary. Its job is not to both sides an issue, its job is to present a story using facts that’s accessible to the public. I get calling out a doc for lying or giving incorrect information, but that’s not what is happening here. Mike even says that this is known stuff but the doc is storytelling. That’s exactly what a documentary is!
@raspberryseedz I beg to differ. The documentary does implement misinformation in its propaganda efforts. @14:00 in, it claims that the land of Canaan was already promised to the Canaanites. There is no basis for that claim. More specifically, that land was alloted to the descendants of Shem. The Canaanites were squatters. See Jubilees 10:22-26. How many scholars have joined in with Dr. Kipp saying how they wish they had produced this video, yet not one Dead Sea Scrolls expert recalled this passage from Jubilees? If someone is going to mock Scripture like in this Satan video and not come off as a just a Late Show with Stephen Colbert segment, they should probably dot all their i's and cross their t's. Or maybe one of the scholars can clarify the narrative here. That said, critical scholarship provides a ton of value when it's done right

There is a middle ground between hard scholarship and trade material, some of Josh's work like the Atheist's Guide to the Old Testament I think fit that description.
Just so I understand on the issues with prophecy is it because we cannot know for sure that the prophecy wasn’t written after the events or that the events recorded were based on the prophecy written beforehand to fulfill it. That there’s no way to test that stuff and that there’s no way to test whether a prophecy of the future is true because it has not yet happened.
Not to speak for the panel here, but it's a combination of many things. Not easily boiled down to bumper stickers explanations. Part of what they were trying to get across. But when it comes to prophecy, the one criteria that everyone should agree on is that it has to be written BEFORE the event it is prophesying. So if by far the majority of scholars agree that this is not the case, then it isn't prophesy. And if many of the minority flat out tell you that they don't agree because they are committed to it being prophesy? Well then that should tell you something.
