    I can't express how much I love this. I've been a strict evangelical for a long time, but no one took my questions and concerns seriously about the data. I'm not sure to what extent my faith remains, but I'm very thankful to listen likeminded people, regardless of worldview. Love you all.

      I left evangelicalism a couple years ago after learning this kind of information. It's been very difficult at times, but ultimately me and my family are much better off mentally and spiritually. I still believe in God, but it's just a different kind of journey than the one I was on before. God bless you in your search for truth. :)

    I’m so sad I missed the live. I want to thank the Scholars on the panel, I’ve learned so much from each and every one here. Thank you so much Dr. Kipp for putting this together.
    My life literally has changed from what I’ve learned from you guys, from hardcore Jehovah’s Witness to atheist, still very much in love with the Bible but finally free from fear. I can never be thankful enough.

    I gotta say as a woman who watched the first few Winger videos, years ago when they came out, about women in ministry, the amount of sheer unholy rage I felt at learning just now that he was regurgitating a predetermined doctrinal statment and straight up lied in the first video he did about starting off Egalitarian before doing his research? And that he doesn't even hold any relevant degrees? My husband says I resembled Hades from the Disney movie for a moment...

    • @mistressofstones
      @mistressofstones 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +7

      Omg I started watching those videos, the guy is (I hesitate to say) evil. I feel like those evangelicals centre those few lines in the NT about women being subordinate (which they often take very out of context too) just because they want to degrade and control women. The Bible has so much in it I feel like what you select to focus on very much demonstrates who you are.

    It is amazing how so many people do NOT know the time, and experiences that one needs to master a subject. Some so many religious leaders take one or two words and then start a spurious "academic" discussion... thank you for gathering your superpower brains to bring some sanity to the world.

    • @grigorigahan
      @grigorigahan 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      yeah for sure. I quit believing in the bible, but kept the interest in the history and culture that brought it into existence (basically an interest in late bronze and early Iron Age Near East and Mesopotamia) and even after years of consuming lay content on the subject from experts like these I'm astounded most times at just how little I've learned when I hear one of these scholars speak. How anyone could think they could 'know' what the bible says or the history of the area by cherry picking a few favorite bible stories is beyond me.

    I’m getting tired of the complaint that a documentary is bad/propaganda because it only gives one side or has an opinion.
    It’s not a debate, it’s a documentary. Its job is not to both sides an issue, its job is to present a story using facts that’s accessible to the public.
    I get calling out a doc for lying or giving incorrect information, but that’s not what is happening here. Mike even says that this is known stuff but the doc is storytelling. That’s exactly what a documentary is!

    • @kennethyakovac665

      @raspberryseedz I beg to differ. The documentary does implement misinformation in its propaganda efforts. @14:00 in, it claims that the land of Canaan was already promised to the Canaanites. There is no basis for that claim. More specifically, that land was alloted to the descendants of Shem. The Canaanites were squatters. See Jubilees 10:22-26.
      How many scholars have joined in with Dr. Kipp saying how they wish they had produced this video, yet not one Dead Sea Scrolls expert recalled this passage from Jubilees?
      If someone is going to mock Scripture like in this Satan video and not come off as a just a Late Show with Stephen Colbert segment, they should probably dot all their i's and cross their t's. Or maybe one of the scholars can clarify the narrative here.
      That said, critical scholarship provides a ton of value when it's done right

  • @johnhavel7685

    Just so I understand on the issues with prophecy is it because we cannot know for sure that the prophecy wasn’t written after the events or that the events recorded were based on the prophecy written beforehand to fulfill it. That there’s no way to test that stuff and that there’s no way to test whether a prophecy of the future is true because it has not yet happened.

    • @nickbrasing8786
      @nickbrasing8786 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Not to speak for the panel here, but it's a combination of many things. Not easily boiled down to bumper stickers explanations. Part of what they were trying to get across. But when it comes to prophecy, the one criteria that everyone should agree on is that it has to be written BEFORE the event it is prophesying. So if by far the majority of scholars agree that this is not the case, then it isn't prophesy. And if many of the minority flat out tell you that they don't agree because they are committed to it being prophesy? Well then that should tell you something. But in something like this it's never simple. That's why scholars get those big bucks (kidding), and why this video was over 2 hours.
      Any of you guys correct me if I'm wrong here.

    I found Satan’s Guide interesting. It always amazes me how much Evangelicals like to go after Ehrman. He even makes clear that what he’s writing or talking about is pretty much the consensus among critical scholars. I just laugh at their attacks. If you can’t attack the arguments attack the man must be their battle cry.

    Be interested to know the thoughts of the panel in relation to any practical or personal consequences for Christians who do not accept contemporary critical conclusions about the book of Daniel.

    39:20 Re: “No interaction with Jewish scholars” - Susan Niditch is a Jewish scholar. In “War in the Hebrew Bible”, she includes a touching story about her grandfather weeping on behalf of the Egyptians during her family’s Seder (pg. 150).
    She’s also the only woman of the 6 featured scholars. I’m a lil disappointed that @JenniferBirdPhD didn’t pull out the knives when y’all casually erased her!
    (jk, I’m sure it was unintentional)

    Teach it from the beginning of a person's exposure to this Epic literature; as the rich cultural syncretism of 300 years formation that it is. Teach how it did influence western and American society. There is no shame in being realistic, accurate, and honest about it only being literature.
    It would save so much trauma.

    I think or at least this is how I think, you can believe in God and know that organized religion can or has mucked up the story. Organized religion is about controlling the flock. I love listening to scholars talking about this stuff and it doesn't affect my belief.

    I have been searching for counter arguments to claims made here, I would love to hear them. I like to hear counter arguments by other scholars so I can have answers to few questions. can we get a panel that is more diverse in thoughts?

      The thing is, this stream is broadly representative of long-established concensus scholarship. Any dissenting views are deeply confessional, belonging exclusively to Evangelicals and other conservative Christians. Most critical scholars tend to ignore these sorts of apologetic responses.

    Gary Habermas says he knows German fluently and includes German and french lit in his survery for the minimal facts. I think Habermas supervised Licona's MS, but he had a different advisor for his Phd.

      I should hope that Gary knows German now, but it is a mystery why every single one of the non-English sources in his PhD was by way of a published English translation. And, never mind just how problematic it is to be citing editorials from a popular level periodical like "Christianity Today," or Josh McDowell's "Evidence that Demands a Verdict" as part of your secondary literature. The entire dissertation is weird.
