Why is gravel often excavated like this? Is there a very high water table or something? Just seems to be a very common thing to see gravel being excavated from under water.
Gravel pits tend to be located in areas with high water tables like river valleys, so once you dig a hole it tends to fill with water. Plus it helps to clean the gravel. :)
