While there, make sure to look up “saltwater railroad”. In the 1700-1800s Many African Americans ran all the way from southern states South Carolina , all the way to -Angola, Florida (one of the first African American city) , & key biscayne lighthouse Miami where they was picked up by secret boats “ saltwater railroad” to escape to the Bahamas . Even today Some of the Bahamian ppl there have African American ancestors. A lot of that history is erased from some history books
