This is bizarre for me, so I'll be honest. I don't like the subject matter that is River Railroad, its just not the kind of layout period and location I like at all. However, you are still the best railway modeler on this planet at this time, and I have learned a lot from you. I cant thank you enough for the skills I have picked up from you that are now enshrined in our loft layout, which was only started last January. Merry Xmas, boomer to boomer.
Thank you for taking the time to share your views! This model Railroad may seem period specific, although the inspiration, and relative scenes come out of my own experiences walking this railroad since the sixties . . . e.g. The slum landlord scene didn't come out of a vacuum, it also has relevance to my sorted history as well ;-) Heck . . . every little detail I model is wrapped up in some metaphoric narrative that I experienced growing up, including the blond woman that can be seen rushing from the Porche to the Movie Studio down the Brewery Alley . . . ;-) Cheers and Happy New Year to You! ~ Boomer.
Hey Brother....please let me say, from the whole modelling community......Merry Christmas, Boomer!!!! Thank you so very much for sharing your life of experience with the world. I get who you are. We all are better for what you teach. Job done brother. Lesson heard and learned.
I don't know how I haven't seen your channel up to today but this video showed up on my YT feed. I want to eventually build an S shelf layout in my attic and your videos will be an inspiration.
Thanks! Merry Christmas and Happy New Year Boomer!!🎉🎉 🎉 I have been following your channel for just under a year. Thanks to your tutorials I have just finished my first Evergreen scratchbuilt structure based on prototype photos and research. I am now using an airbrush and your techniques for scribing, painting and weathering. You impart a wealth of information through your channel and I have been using it with great results. Looking forward to sections 3,4 and 5!
Thanks! Simply put, your content advances the hobby and for me helps replace the loss of good old-fashioned hobby shops by showing how and inspiring us to try! Happy Holidays!
I'm impressed with your approach to a model railroad. I mentioned to my brother how I plan to add a backdrop to my benchwork. He's not familiar with model railroading and asked what a backdrop is. It made me think how that term seems to be derived from theater stage settings. And I recall your many mentions of the "aperture" of the scene. Your efforts strongly reflect your involvement with the film industry, which is simply the modern form of theater so that the railroad model is a kind of miniature stage setting. I look forward to watching you proceed with Act 4 Scene 3. ;-)
Interesting you mention the theatre analogy. Of course 90 years ago the doyen of scenic model railroading Frank Ellison set the vanguard of a model railroad scene composition as being theatre, and Boomer has continued to bring this to the forefront
Planning everything from mental image to 3D isn´t easy in term of spatial territory occupation. Remove that barn and styrofoam, suddenly we´re lost with that empty triangular space. A few dimentional items that you know in your scale and like magic it takes life. A carboard shoe box become an industry. A piece of irregular shape towel is already a swampy zone that is far more helpful than barren plywood or styrofoam. The more guide you add the easier then it become to have a visual idea of what work or doesn´t fit. You can draw many plans but it´s not obvious, except by printing full scale then put on the layout to see the result. Not everyone have mental capacity to convert a plan in screen in the real space available. Thanks Boomer and pet Dusty for me. Enjoy your hollidays😊😊😊
Boomer Happy Holidays 🎄and a prosperous and healthy 2025 🎆to you, your family and friends. Thanks for all the great video's this year, you were again an inspiration for every modeler. I love to try your techniques and choices in materials and must say it always works the way you show and the materials such as Golden Products, Matte Medium and paint choices they make the different in building quality. Looking forward for your new video's next year and the progess on your fantastic layout. Cheers Ronald (Modellbahn Rosenbahn) from the Netherlands
Hiya Boomer, after around 12 months I have finally caught up, watching every single one of your videos including the second section podcasts. Now I have finally subscribed, and can't wait for each new episode :-) I feel like I have just been through a University degree in model making. Loved every second. Like everyone else it seems, I am totally in awe of your work, and like many, encouraged and inspired! Like I bought an airbrush a year ago and was a little scared to give it a crack even though my Dad was a spraypinter by trade. Only in the last couple of months have I started using it and there's no stopping me now! Thankyou so much. Also I've been scratchbuilding mostly wagons (cars) in styrene for years now, but feel more motivated and inspired and not afraid to try even more. Plastic Weld, what a product eh. And Tamiya with IPA, a true marriage. I love your whole attitude towards modelling, and the emotion you showed when you completed the Princess build I'm sure many like me shed a tear or two as well. Many of us know that feeling. Best wishes to you and yours for the New Year - and the beautiful Dusty of course. And again, many many thanks for your knowledge and inspiration.
Merry Christmas Boomer. Thank you for the perpetual gift of your Fantabulous youtube page, you've given and shared your God given talent with us all, and that's what we are all supposed to do.Your layout is incredible and a joy to watch it grow step by step. Thank you for all you do for the hobby. Scratch Dusty behind the ears for me, God bless you.
Thanks for the update. Seeing your grass pocked flat cars in the closing scene reminded me of a video from Iowa recently, where the host flew a drone over the yard and there was a string of shorty ore cars on a back track. The cars were full of fill material of some kind but each car had a small forest growing in them. Obviously been there several years. These are the kinds of things I notice now because you encourage the viewers to look past the obvious and see the whole picture. Merry Christmas and hoping that you have your best year ever in 2025.
Very cool Boomer, it’s always cool to watch your projects progress like this. IPEX plastics… I’m pretty sure we just built a machine and installed it at IPEX in the Toronto area back in the summer, they’re into plastic electrical boxes and accessory manufacturing right, probably the same company.
Merry Christmas, Boomer! ❤ And thanks for adding a new item to my shopping list. I've now got a 4lb sack of the Activa fastmache on order (because the small box is out of stock at Amazon). Santa is bringing it on Christmas Eve. 🎄
Thank you for a great year of learning and entertainment.I anxiously look forward to the coming year. Merry Christmas and happy New Year and may God bless.
Boomer, Merry Christmas to you and your family. Thank you for another great year of sharing your time, talent, inspiration, and imagination with us. Here’s wishing you a safe, prosperous, and, most of all, a healthy 2025.
I’m glad to see I’m not the only one who struggles with scene composition! Sometimes I panic and just go weather a box car (tried the dark green and black Tamiya mix for the first time ) thank you.Merry Christmas to you.
Hi Boomer I want thank you for all your inspiration wonderful teaching videos. Many of us on your channel have been inspired by your work. Wishing you and yours a Merry Christmas and a Happy New year We look forward to learning more from the 2025 model Railroading content in your videos Thanks brother !!!
This series couldn't be more perfectly timed for me. Mr Boomer's channel is Heaven sent for anyone hoping to learn realistic scenery development beyond "kit bashing" or perhaps instruction for making trees or ground cover, but what's going on here can not be found anywhere else. I created a layout room by building a 30' x 20' mezzanine in my hobby - workshop, now, after almost two years of scaled drawings over & over again and 2nd guessing the best benchwork configuration for the useable floor space, I have the full scale benchwork outline transferred to the floor, ready to begin framing with 3 weeks off work. Hopefully, by summer, I will be ready to (attempt to) implement the processes learned here. The scenery will be a slow & tedious development, but the plan is to go ahead and get some trains running to keep the grandson entertained while I bring the railroad to life. Cheers!
You summed up what I was hoping this channel would eventually be - a tactile demonstration and inspiration for those who attempt to build a personal layout that they can manage and enjoy for a long time. 😁
This video was a confirmation for me. I spent 2 or 3 weeks mocking everything up before I progressed beyond the benchwork stage on my layout and I'm convinced that's the way to go. I laid paper over my benchwork and marked track and structure locations as well as making a photo record for later reference. Yes, things have evolved some since then and probably will continue to evolve, but the plan is fundamentally unchanged. Big head start. BTW, Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to you and all
Thanks again for another helpful video. I'm glad to learn that I'm not the only one who lets the thought process sit and soak and stew for (sometimes) months. I've learned that the "hurri-ed-er I go the behind-er I get," with having to redress aspects of the layout that I pushed due to impatience. Have an absolutely wonderful Christmas and a happy and healthy new year. Blessings and peace!
Very COOL Boomer, the older generation locomotives are so much more interesting than the modern ones today. Merry Christmas, and all the best for 2025.
@boomerdiorama we still have f7 variants running in freight service today in Australia and not just one or two, probably 20 or so ,as well we have the last emd streamliners built in the world and they are still working.
Nice update. Can't wait to see the theme in your mind develop into a great composition. At the end, the hand held NCE cab looked so out of place. It was the only thing that reminded me that this is a model.
Hello Boomer, and Merry Christmas! It has been an awesome year for your videos of the Carrier Princess and other modelling on this most incredible layout you have under construction. I have had the pleasure to meet you and have many chats with over the last months. You have given inspiration to many out there. Working at the store, I see lots of people coming in for products that you have shown on your updates. Looking forward to more excellent videos in the New Year. Thanks for sharing!
Wishing you and your family a Merry Christmas 🌲🎄and a Happy New Year! Thanks for all the effort you put into making these video’s and the knowledge sharing on modelling/diorama’s with all of us. Much appreciated. 🙂👍🏼👋🏻🇳🇱
Boomer, wishing you and your family a very Merry Christmas and a happy and healthy New Year!! Thank you for all the incredible content!! Not only is your layout fantastic, but you are BY FAR the best model railroading content creator on YT!! Looking forward to more excellence in 2025!!
Merry Christmas Boomer and a Happy New Year. I always look forward to your videos which have inspired me to try your tips when doing my own layout. All the best from the UK.
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. I’m starting my first layout at 75. Thank you. I’ve learned so much from you. I really appreciate all the help you give us and the inspiration.
Boomer, Thanks for your inspiration and all your knowledge transfer. Wishing you and your family a fantastic holiday season and an even better 2025. Thanks again, K
Been following you for a long time - your modelling scales are on a higher level very impressive and enjoy watching every informative video - Merry Christmas and Happy New Year
Hey Boomer. It's good to know that I have approached my layout using the same concepts. Even though I have no idea what I'm doing since this is my first build. I must admit you do have the art of compression fine-tuned to another level. Are you sure you never worked for Lionel?😊. Wishing you a joyous Christmas and a super productive new year on your layout.
TY Boomer, once more I was sucked into the proposed scene... Though not your thing, Southern Tier offer up some nice elevator structures and equipment to add.
Makita makes a very new (quiet) com[pressor now with a tank. They are fairly reasonable in price as well. Try looking one up at a contractor tool store. I am sure you can find one. ;-)
Many thanks for super, great ideas, skills, and processes. I have many questions but one that seems to stick in my brain is about a particular video. What is the music from you used in Vlog 28? A melody reminiscent of Band of Brothers.
All the music I use is listed below the video description on every one of my videos. Not sure what device you watch the channel on but if it's a T.V. you are missing out on tons of free content. The TH-cam platform (channel) is best viewed on a desktop computer. The music for video # 28 is called "American Frontiers" and is licensed by TH-cam. Cheers and thanks for sharing! ~ Boomer. ;-)
Has anyone tried using a smaller scale model for making background scenes to give the illusion of depth and distance, i.e. on an HO scale layout, use N scale models in the background? Paint them a much lighter or darker depending on the scene and not as detailed. Merry Christmas to all!!!
You're spot on about gestating composition over time - I spent a huge amount of time swapping out different landscape and structural elements on my 5 foot shelf layout that resides in my home office. I would place multiple elements - all variations on the basic composition - then spend a week or two just being around them as I worked/in the evening. Over time it would become apparent what was working and what wasn't, but the whole process to get my composition elements finalised took about 8 months and a ton of celotex and cardboard mock-ups....just for that tiny 5 feet! If you want an insight into the other end of the scale, check out 'Britain's Biggest Model Railway - Heaton Lodge' here on TH-cam. The layout's builder is attempting something really quite breathtaking in 0 gauge. Frankly I don't know how he has the mental fortitude to tackle it - it's properly nuts. Many thanks for another fabulous year of A-Grade content. Hope you have a lovely Christmas and a happy New Year
I use BD20 sensors by NCE and Old Atlas switches for CTC. The whole signal system is the Atlas Signal System. You don't need a computer for the Atlas system. No signal system is cheap but I find this one to be the best for me. I show it here: th-cam.com/video/j0-HSF5OtmU/w-d-xo.html
Good stuff, Boomer. Merry Xmas. I'm still running laps in 2025, so you don't have to😅 Just got done running in real snow. Check it out when ya get a chance.🚂🇨🇦🙋
Boomer--I need your help. I want to do some roads based on your expertise. I can get the Liquitex Crackle Paste here in Germany, but not the Natural Sand Paste. Golden is the major brand in the EU which I can get or mix sand with. Both are Acrylic as you know. Do you think the two brands will mix? Golden does have a Crackle Paste, but I am looking for the fine grained cracks you acheived. Please let me know what you think? Thank you in advance.

@@rogerbivins9144 I've learned an astounding amount. Information overload for a relatively new model railroader. Which is how I like it! 😆
You summed up what I was hoping this channel would eventually be - a tactile demonstration and inspiration for those who attempt to build a personal layout that they can manage and enjoy for a long time. 😁
Many thanks Boomer for all your great work this year 👌😎☕️ Fred

A lot of territory covered this year, and I'm looking to what's in store for 2025. Merry Christmas.
Cheers, and thanks for following along!
Very awesome
Thanks!
Very Nice god work Merry Cristmas and Happy New Year
Happy holidays!
Have a good holiday season and see you next year.
Same to you!
great layout update keep up the great vlogs
Thank you!
Merry Christmas!
Merry Christmas to you too!
All the best to you too!
merry christmas
Merry Christmas!
Happy Christmas and thank you for all the content this year.
O.K. Cheers.
Super perfeito difícil de ver no TH-cam esse tipo de detalhamento
Cheers!
TY Boomer, once more I was sucked into the proposed scene...
Though not your thing, Southern Tier offer up some nice elevator structures and equipment to add.
Thanks for the tip! It's always good to look to other manufacturers for inspiration.
@boomerdiorama Southern Tier Grain as reference if you Google it. Do some real nice stuff..
@boomerdiorama southern-tier grain modellers supply.
You once mentioned you use a quiet air tank for your air brush. Can you identify the type and any accessories you use on the tank? Have a Marry Xmas.
Makita makes a very new (quiet) com[pressor now with a tank. They are fairly reasonable in price as well. Try looking one up at a contractor tool store. I am sure you can find one. ;-)
@@boomerdioramaI was thinking it was just an air tank without a compressor. I get it now.
Thank you for another excellent video. Your layout looks so much larger than it is. (I THINK, phase 1 & 2 ARE JUST 10'?)
Last mile local layouts always feel big because of the detail in scale. It's the biggest secret in model railroading. ;-) Cheers!
Merry Christmas to you and yours...
Quick question, is the a difference between the LePage PL300 and the Locktight PL300?
Probably none.
Great idea!
Hope you have a lovely Christmas and a happy New Year
Achieving balance with scene composition takes the most time. Just keep at it until it clicks. ;-)
Hey Boomer I always enjoy your tutorials. What do you use for your electric wires as 0:24 ? Merry Christmas
O.K. Thanks!
Both brands are completely compatible. It's up to you on how you mix them for effects, Have fun and experiment.
Where is the tugboat? Did I miss it?
No. I'm not building another maritime subject after the brutal run on the Ferry for awhile. Jeesh man. . . I need a break. ;-) Cheers!
