QD: Started my 28th lap of the sun off with a foot injury that required surgery because it was due to extra bone being chronically deposited. Because of that, I had already decided to hang up the shoes for good, and i found another physical activity to do that didn’t require footwear (grappling).
But I ended up taking a chance on surgery, and if it went well I was going to finally take running seriously and try to train consistently enough to strive for the goal of being an excellent runner. The surgery went okay, and I was ready to run in may, and started training. I built up the workload very patiently. I quit my job that was 45+hrs/week as a dentist with a long commute, because I felt like the long hours just ground me down too much. As I’m typing now, I’m rounding out my first 100mi week in years, and have a job that is a perfect balance for running. Here’s to being disciplined, consistent, and persistent in 2023. I think those are virtues we learn from this sport, and can help each of us continue to grow in running and in life.

This year was quite epic, although I moved with my wife to another city in Austria due to work and despite a COVID infection in June which forced me to cancel two tune up ultras for my only 100K Ultra Trail this year. I got it done anyway finishing my 5th 100K. I also ran two road marathons (3:12 and 3:17), not reaching the sub 3h goal but that is OK. 5K, 10K and 1/2 Marathon PBs were the fruit of this journey. I also did two classic mountain races which were on my bucket list and right now I am two weeks from starting my marathon training block for my 3rd sub 3h attempt at Vienna City Marathon in late April 2023. 3 weeks in Paraguay (summer!!!) will come in very handy. Love the journey!!! GREETINGS FROM LINZ/AUSTRIA!!!

QD: My running journey in 2022 has been very similar to yours. I have been dealing with plantar fasciitis consistently since December of last year. Constant pain all day long, not just the traditional morning pain. I began putting many hours in on the bike and was getting very fit until I got hit by a ca in October and suffered a shoulder injury I had to get surgically repaired (thankful that was all I injured). This gave me time to reflect on this gift that we are given - LIFE. Along with giving me an opportunity to improve in others areas of life. Now, after my forced time off from surgery, I have started slowly running again with little to no foot pain and feel optimistic about next years racing season. ALSO, I come to this channel each and every day for the positivity that you spread and the work ethic behind what you do - not for any specific content.

This year's journey included my first ever DNF after hundreds of races of every kind and distance over 20 years of running. At 2022 Pikes Peak Marathon (my 8th). Had "issues" over the last year and basically couldn't train properly. Thought I could tough it out, but had to turn around at 12,000 ft. (9 miles in). The first one is tough, we've all been there but as you say "onward and upward". I live to fight another day!

My journey has been one of adapting to a new embrace of running. From my 20's to late 40's, I did a lot of racing up to the marathon distance, took it all seriously and had some success competitively. As age slowed me down, I hung it up and didn't run for several years. Now at 57, this has been a year of returning to just 3-4 miles a day, slow, but a healthy and fun endeavor again. Running can be so many different things, and I'm now enjoying it in a way I never did before.

QOD started the year out with a torn MCL and a complete tear of theACL from slamming my knee into a large tree while skiing. Needless to say being off my feet and unable to work let alone exercise was a big setback. After reconstructive surgery in April my surgeon recommended running for recovery and here I am closing out the year flirting with getting my 10k pb under an hour. As a longtime mountain sports person I’m seeing things in a new light with running and hopefully the hard work on the trails will empower me to finally tick off some of the major goals/ peaks I’ve not been brave enough to get after in the past. Thanks for contributing to the psych.

I went to compete in the military marathon world champs in Peru in may and the cross country wc in Portugal. This summer i had an amazing trip to Iten, Kenya. Ran with the goat amogst others, but i also was sick.
The year ended with a PR in the Valencia marathon (2.33.42) aged 50, and became national Champion at the half marathon in my age group , almost forgot. I had a lot of fun, and meeting all kinds of people around the world was something i will never forget

QD: 2022 is my comeback year for running. I ran my first and only marathon back in 2016 and then my dad passed away a month later. Since then I fell out of running as wasn’t taking very good care of myself. Then one day this past summer I bought a new pair of running shoes (ASICS Magic speed v1’s) and signed up for a 10 miler in October. I then watched your review for the magic speed and, countless videos later, fell back in love with running again. Now I’m signed up for 26.2 on 2023! Thanks for all the running knowledge and inspiration that you bring!

QOD: Goals had to be re-evaluated after a bad case of Deep Vein Thrombosis 1 weeks after Seville Marathon in February. Managed to recover and make the start line for London Marathon which was an achievement. The race wasn’t what I wanted but I finished and after all that’s happened that was a bonus. The rest of the year has been accepting that 2022 has been a write off running year and now focusing on building back my strength for 2023 but will not be doing marathons. Need to be sensible. Grateful that I can still run. It’s not been about the numbers this year. It’s been the memories created when I could run.

About the time you got injured, I drifted away from running to focus on building muscle in the gym. I just signed up for my first running race (10.8 mile trail run through the frozen mountains) in January so now I'm back to training for running and consuming more running content. Straight line paths are rarely the most satisfying to travel, it is the forks in the road that make life interesting. I'm glad you have recovered well and thank you for consistently producing great content (about anything).

QD: Keeping it just to running / racing - I'm extremely pleased with how adding trackwork into my weekly routine has paid dividends in my 5K, 10K, and Half Marathon times, as I've knocked down PR after PR in 2022. But the marathon eludes me - despite me dedicating most of my year to them, I've fallen apart at the two I ran and couldn't handle a potential disappointment of a 3rd.

    • @shannonsides6017
      @shannonsides6017 ปีที่แล้ว +2

That track work has been really exciting to see! You’ve got so so so much endurance, I wonder if the timing of them was just too much….I know I have to have a LONG break between marathons bc if I’m not mentally ready for the last 5-10k of a marathon, even if my legs are tapered, I’ll suffer. One thing I learned after Boston is more miles only help to a certain extent if I’m not recovering well or just feel mentally burned out. Sorry to ramble, but I can’t wait for you to give it another go!

Terrence, I echo Shannon’s input and urge you to not give up! You’re an amazing runner but the marathon is on such a completely different level than HM and below, which is why I’ve only done one/year until next year, when I’m adding CHI to BOS. I hope it agrees with me, but they’re 6 months apart so hoping that will be sufficient spacing.

Everything is shaped with a narrative of sorts with much content out there, but you have always been able to be real without that shaping. And so it DOES feel like an insight into your genuine life journey as a runner with its peaks and valleys... so keep on reviewing and documenting because this is the Chronicle of Seth... and to be honest, long after we're gone, when your kids/grandkids/greatgrandkids miss you/want to see you/hear your voice/have a taste of how you lived, then this will be the bridge for them to reach back in time and space to you. So far for 2023 I've signed up for Waytoocool 50k, Canyons 100k, Rio Del Lago 50k and CIM, with more to come.

Seth, I think it’s a smart move you’re making to hone in on what you enjoy doing and what your original followers seem to have loved most. Harking back to your bullying video, being bullied as a kid can result in a tendency to try to please too many people too much. I can relate to that personally! Those who don’t wish you well are not amenable to being pleased, your devoted fans will not abandon you, and the rest of the YT world can pick and choose, or enjoy the variety within your formula from before you “drifted and dabbled” (to use your own words).

I ran a 5k in 30 mins and 10k in 1:09 recently. I have come a long way from being unable to run even 400 m to this. I used to weigh about 300 pounds. Now I am at around 220. It has been really tough and I'm getting a new pair of shoes in Jan. Asics Novablast 3 hopefully. I'll be running even more and I've created an entire world around running.
The two TH-camrs who helped me make this journey enjoyable are Seth James DeMoor and Kofuzi. Especially, Seth, who has been a prolific content creator. Also, my dad has always been my inspiration on this path to fitness. Weight loss just was a product of all the hard work. Running was the catalyst for this change.
Seth, injuries come and go. But real followers stay. Been subscribed to the channel since a whole year now. My current joggers are the easy going Reebok Floatride 3 Grow. Great pair that has been with me for the majority of my running journey. I've been injured so many times. I remember having to take hot showers to ease the pain in my shin and the countless cramps.
Running is the hardest sport out there.

Great to see you after so long. I believe we spoke on Ko's chat. So, I'm in a bit of a dilemma.
Novablast 3s might go out of stock in India. So, I might have go for either Gel Cumulus 24 or GlideRide 3. Any ideas. Personally, I run no more than 10kms and am trying to improve my time. Might go for a half marathon in the "long run."
      Would love your inputs.

Hi Aditya--a friend of Shannon’s as well. First, adding my congrats on your progress which is terrific. I suggest you try the GlideRide in a store to be sure the distinct roll geometry of the midsole agrees with your stride. If you don’t need a stability shoe consider the Asics Nimbus 25 if it’s coming to India. It’s supposed to be released in the US next month and be very improved from the previous version. Also if you don’t need a stability shoe you might want to try on the New Balance 1080 or 880, both very good daily trainers. The 1080 is softer and cushier but the 880 is more supportive. Just some ideas….Martha
