Wow. This brings back memories. This was 3 months before I saw the band for the first time ever in Cincinnati at Riverfront Coliseum. I had burned to see them for 10 years but being a college kid, I'd had no money and no way to get there from Oxford, OH. This was finally my chance, and I remember that October night like it was 10 minutes ago. Life was never the same.

Great description. My wife and I saw them for the first and only time on Oct. 16, 1981 in the Portland Trailblazers' old arena, Memorial Coliseum. Always wished that I had seen them when Mike Pinder was still a bandmate. Before moving to Oregon from Ohio in April 1979, we attended some great concerts in Fort Wayne, Indiana, BGSU and the U. of Toledo.

I love this band. I lived with their 1st seven albums in the early 70's. Now that you can watch and listen to all kinds of their songs I like to see them live, but those albums have some great instrumental music and poetry on them that is priceless.

You mean their 2nd to their 8th album. John and Justin were NOT with the Moody Blues on their first album.

Man, I loved this tour. First time I really got to see them - had crappy behind the stage seats for the Octave tour at the old Olympia Stadium in Detroit - but saw them both times thru town on this tour, lawn seats at Pine Knob and then great seats very near the stage at the then-new Joe Louis Arena.

Many thanks for posting this video. This particular tour was very important to me as I got lucky enough to get backstage in December of '81 and met them. I was 23 years old and ended up looking and sounding like a blithering idiot. But seeing this clip has been a blessing. They are wearing the same clothes as they did at my concert!

This brings back happy memories. I was going to school in England in 1981 and was lucky enough to see The Moody Blues in June that year at the Royal Albert Hall. This just brought all of the magic back.

Summerfest in Milwaukee last year, and they are still amazing live. I respect Edge for still being up there, even with another drummer helping out. He can still play.

Anyone who doesn't believe that the Moody Blues are first and foremost a rock 'n' roll band should have to watch this until they change their minds.

  • @fedecasares

The Moody Blues was a great band but I never understood what Patrick Moraz was doing there. That guy was too talented to play such simple things. Don't be mad at what I say but after hearing him play on Yes ... well ... it doesn't matter anymore.

He may be a virtuoso but, in 1978, he had bills to pay when the Moodies needed a replacement for Pinder. He had been let go from Yes (and would be from the Moodies) and was looking for work. The Moodies gave him a steady paycheck in the 1980s. I don't think he fit with the band musically or personality-wise. (But I do think he had good moments on the first two albums.) He is credited with updating their sound but, for me, credit goes to producer Pip Williams and engineer Greg Jackman. They needed a change from Tony Clarke.

Edge used to really play back then, and do so with power, speed and enthusiasm, instead of pretending now while having another drummer do all the work for him.
