I love Chinese mythology and there are so many cool references in this game. I really want to share these little easter eggs so that others can get them! Just some context, I’m from Norther China, so a lot of my knowledge is based off of the local traditions there. There are regional differences, and this game was made by Taiwanese developers. Please free to add on or correct me in the comments! Ninety-nine heavens: In Chinese mythology, people believe that there are 9 layers of heaven. Hence the ninety-nine heavens. Peaches: There are special peaches in Chinese mythology that is believed to grant mortals eternal life. Hence all the mention of peaches and the peach festival in the village in the game. Shennong: A ruler in ancient China (many stories about him are exaggerated since it was old old China, like before the first dynasty China, he’s almost a combination of myth and history). He is believed to be the one that introduced medicine and farming to ancient China. He later became known as the Yan Emperor. One story of him is that he tried hundreds of herbs and poisons to learn about their medicinal properties. Apparently he had a clear stomach, so if an herb was poisonous, his intestines would turn black and people could see through his clear belly. He also died by eating a poisonous herb (apparently). Haotian sphere: This might be a reference to the respectful name for god or the heavens/sky (Hao Tian). But I’m not sure which characters the name is, so I could be wrong. Fusang: A mystical location in Chinese mythology at the east most point in the world. It is believed that this place has two trees intertwined with each other and is where the sun rests. So Fusang can refer both to the location and the two trees. Fu sang is also another name for the Chinese Hibiscus (a red hisbiscus), which is probably why the beginning of the game mentioned getting the Crimson Hibiscus. I also think the “tentacles” in the games are supposed to be tree roots, nodding to the Fusang in Chinese mythology. Kunlun: the mystical mountain where Chinese people believe the gods lived on. It is also a mountain range in China. Tiandao: a rough translation is “God’s way”. Tian means sky or god in Chinese (not a specific god, but meaning more like the heavens); Dao means way (the same character for Daoism/Taoism). Penglai: the name for the mystical realm where Chinese people believed the gods lived. Google said that Penglai is more of a Daoist/Taoist term. Fangshi: Again I’m not sure what the Chinese characters are, but this could be a reference to 方士, a priest shamen like person that provided divination and was seeking to create a formula for immortality. Almost like an alchemist. Jin: I think the character they’re using is 金, which means gold (or money in this context). Shanhai: This is NOT Shanghai the city haha. It is Shanhai (there’s one less g). The pronunciation is very similar if you’re not familiar with Chinese and Chinese tones. The Chinese book of mystical creatures is called “The Scroll of Mountains (Shan” and Seas (Hai)”. So Shanhai literally means mountains and seas, but is also a reference to the Scroll of Mountain and Seas. Kuafu: A God. He was believed to be very strong and hung snakes on his ears. One story of him is that he chased the sun (because the sun killed a lot of his tribe’s people). He got really thirsty and drank dry the Yellow River and Wei River. He was still thirsty and tried to run to a lake/river in the north. He died of thirst before he could get there. He threw his staff before he died, which turned into a forest. Tao Fruit: I’m not sure what this is. Heng: I don’t remember Hou Yi having a sister, but I’m not sure. If others know, please add! Some other cool easter eggs: Yi’s coat looks like a Dao Pao, a Daoist/Taoist garb worn usually by Daoist/Taoist practitioners. A lot of the cat statues in the hallways are based off of Buddhist and Daoist/Taoist imagery. The big floppy arm “puppet’ in the peach festival in the beginning of the game is based off of Southern China traditions where they make big paper and bamboo floats/puppets of gods and parade them across town. The “flappy arms” are quite characteristic of these “puppets”.
Maybe they like Feng brothers and sisters Yi Heng may be the model of Hou Yi and Chang'e. Although the original setting is not brother and sister, Chang'e's original name on Wiki is "Hengwo"
This is awesome! As a non-Chinese person learning Mandarin, it was nice to see some of the words I knew (like 金) and also learn more about the culture! I really hope that Jacob and Julia keep playing =)
As a non-Chinese enthusiast of global folklore, I’m gonna bandwagon this to mention an interesting fact about Hou Yi and the Ten Suns: While Hou Yi was a hero for shooting down nine of the suns and was, in fact, operating on the orders of the Jade Emperor, killing them was still considered a crime, so the Jade Emperor stripped him of his godhood and cast him down to the mortal realm, mirroring the intro where the cat grandma threw Yi off a cliff. Of course, I’m not sure how the Jade Emperor was expecting an archer god to solve the problem of nine extra suns if not through archery, but that’s actually indicative of a broader trend in Chinese folklore that I find very interesting where their spirits and gods are very bureaucratic and story beats include stuff like “this god has been embezzling taxed incense offerings that were supposed to go to the wages of the less worshiped but still vital bureaucrats” or “strictly speaking, doing something and doing nothing are both illegal so they just found someone with low enough political power to solve the problem and take the punishment”.
The 'you remained very calm' part reminded me of when I was being made over for a TV show, and they spent 1.5 hours just plucking my brows. My eyes were watering so badly that the only way to stop the water coming out was to keep my eyes closed. Over an hour in, the person doing the plucking commented how stoic I'd been the whole time.

My number one cable management tip is just get a big roll of two-sided hook and loop, easy to use, looks neat, you can cut off exactly the sized pieces you need, it's cheap AF so you don't have to be stingy with it, and if you ever need to add/remove/move/change anything you can freely just unstick and restick without having to start completely from scratch.
Yes! I use the double sided velcro stuff, but basically the same. Looks so snazzy, plus you can use it to tape up rolls of unused cables, of which I have an entire drawer of.

"Why didn't he save the first two people?!" Obviously, he needed a shorter Apeman to make the Harvester drop lower. That's probably why he gave Shuanshuan the flower in the first place. No, I am NOT a tsundere! Why do you keep sayong that?!
I love how Julia has apparently been just feeling out the boss fights in Bloodborne, not thinking about patterns and just kind of feeling where to land hits, because that is really something given how much she has just breezed through some fights I have seem people struggle on.
Sometimes the ability to do something well, especially at speed, is hindered by active thought. I am like that with puzzle games and mental calculations. I get it right if I don't think about it, but once I do I stumble. Considering Julia tends to second guess herself, it actually doesn't surprise me that this method works so well for her. She *knows* how, she just has to not think too hard about it.
