Varian, a genius alchemist in his village, started experimenting with different things to try and destroy the black rocks because the royal family was ignoring the situation and refused to acknowledge that the black rocks were overrunning villages. In one of his experiments, he was handling amber in one of his vials when his dad came in-causing him to spill the amber on the black rocks. His father pushed Varian away from the amber and the amber started growing and began to trap his father. In a desperate attempt to save him, Varian ran to the kingdom and pleaded with Rapunzel (the princess) to help him and his father only for the guards to throw him out while Rapunzel promised to help as soon as she could. When Varian made his way back to his father, he was completely encased in amber. Varian received no help from the royal family in regards to both the amber and the black rocks, so he decided to take matters into his own hands and consequently became a villain. He kidnapped the queen, fed people truth serum in order to find what he thought would free his father from amber (that failed), and basically went to war with the kingdom in an attempt to help his father after the royal family ignored him (hence his line “I’ll make them hear me”). Varien is so misunderstood. He is not the villain. While I don't agree with his actions, it is partially Rapenzuls fault for going back on her 'promise'. Imagine someone promises something and when you need them the most they're like sorry I have other things to deal with maybe later.
