Nice!! Love UK. Saw them in Calif at the Santa Monica civic center with Jobson and Bozzio. Great job on the song.
You are one of the finest drummers there is.
Thank you!!!
5 stars.
Eddie
Great job!
Great jpb...the point here is THE GROOVE and it is on the noose...master ! I have a big xmile...take care Dave !
@17drums Bill played them on detuned RotoToms on the LP, and they were overdubbed rather than played as part of the original take. Presto Vivace was a piece that Eddie had written and wanted it played just as it had been scored; the overdubbed rotos were Bill's way of getting his stamp on what way being played :-) [Bill mentions this in 'When in Doubt Roll' and various other interview sources]
Great playing tho, well done. ITDON & Mental Medication are prob my favs to play along to from that LP
Great job! Love Bruford and Bozzio's playing! Long live UK!
Thanks! It's a shame they only did one studio album with Bruford, and one studio, one live album, with Bozzio.
@@17drums Agree. What a loss. Those albums never get old to me.
Fantastic music and drum work! One is Your best, Dave! The intro of this hit (till 1:07) is outstanding, "deadshot" for me! That,s music! .
Left-handed drumming and drum-kit! You are like "Phil Collins plays Bruford" - awesome stuff!
Great! good job bro.
Greetings from America, and thanks so much!
wonderful.....WONDERFUL! I guess I now have reason to believe Bruford didn't overdub those tom parts....thank you. This puts things ahead, my friend. This clears some mystery and really does a service, I think, to drumming. This is a really wonderful post....what youtube OUGHT to be about.
Thank YOU, my friend! The funny thing is that Bruford doesn't seem to play that Dragon Drums part (where I used Octabans) when he does it live. So maybe, he DID overdub it anyway? I posted my version chiefly because nobody else seems to include that part either in their covers. Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks, again.
@CaseyCor Thanks. Yeah, I'd leave the wrap on. A glue remover would probably melt the acrylic and ruin the whole look. If you really wanted to spruce them up though, you can always buy an outside finish to attach to the shells. They'd look almost brand new (depending on how the lugs still look). The drums sound pretty much the same raw as they do miked.
Thank you very much, Eddie! That's quite a compliment coming from such a distinguished musician as yourself! God bless you, my friend!
Rather impressive, I don't know how I can get great comments from a drummer who plays like that !
Great job !
Very nice, your hand independence is great.
I'm going to by myself a Fibes Fiberglass kit in a few hours here.
Man, Dave! This is killer! GREAT JOB! ******!
Thanks, George! This is one of my favorites, too. The Bruford beat is just so cool. Very fun to play.
After all these years... So many other have posted their efforts to attempt to what you have accomplished to perfection. I may be mistaken but I believe even Buford had difficulty doing Presto Vivace and Reprise. He was assisted with over dubbing on UK's greatest album. Never had I heard him repeat such rhythmic dexterity in his percussuion on any of their live albums.. ( many bootlegs). Your hard work paid off in wonderous dividends. Pure Magic! Long live 17Drums.
Well thank you VERY much, Papa Macgee! That's the reason I decided to cover this song, Bruford NEVER played those little octaban (dragon drum) overdub parts live, though it was clearly possible to do so. I've often wondered why. No one else does either (in their drum covers). To me, it's an important part of the beat.
Thanks! No, I didn't get to see Bozzio. Don't have much free time to get out anymore. On this version though, the drums were played by Bill Bruford. I played Bozzio on my other UK cover, 'The Only Thing She Needs' (had to be fair and do both drummers!) I didn't see any videos by your band on 'Watcher' or 'Presto'. Would LOVE to see them both. Planning on posting them at all? And I'd be honored to drum with you!
This is absolutely perfect! I don't play drums myself, but I heard Bruford's stuff was hard as hell to play. Amazing job!
That's quite a compliment, coming from an avowed Bruford follower! Thanks so much!
wow amazing job with this one...such a rare find on youtube this kind of stuff.
+Brian Russick - Drummer / Percussionist Thanks again, Brian! I like to try and cover drum songs that few or none have covered before. The problem is that most people today have never heard any of this material before.
+17drums exactly...
HOLY SMOKES!! Great stuff man!! I'm just starting to get into the concepts of progressive drumming & learning odd time signatures. Kick ass brotha! I love it!!
this is incredible, you are a beast my friend.
Excellent drumming man, and what a cool drum kit. Love those syncopated patterns Bruford use to play.
Hi Dave, Killer job !!! Great playing, sound and Kit- You Rock Man :>)
Regards, Tones
Tony Rocks Thanks, Tony! This was one of my first videos, so the quality of both audio and video is somewhat lacking. I've thought about re-taping it, but decided that I didn't want to lose the views here!
I hear you Dave. I know you have so much fun doing your Videos in your Studio; just like me :>) It's so hard finding great players who want to commit, so when I'm playing those tunes I'm in a dream-world like I'm playing with those players from the original LP's/ CD's; since we are in that moment of time- lol. You re-tape to your Hearts content Dave.
I need to figure out how to mix the audio with my live Drums compared to how I do it now. Right now I'm just playing the live drums to the music blasting through my PA. I have to wear earplugs due to having the music loud enough to balance with the drums.
I have one set of speakers for the CD music and sampling pads and then another set of speakers for the Roland V session kit; each set of speakers has a separate Mixer. I just have the one camcorder- A Canon hard drive camcorder. The mic on that thing is amazing. I don't know how it doesn't distort due to the volume in that room. I guarantee people hear it a half mile away- I'm talking Man-o-war volume- lololol.
My email is: tonygiambri@hotmail.com
Lets keep in touch :>) I'm in the Dallas area.
Regards and have a great 4th weekend.
Tones
The only way to gain real control over all of your volume levels would be to interface your inputs with an audio computer program such as Cubase or Garageband. Once you have all of the separate inputs, you can master the sounds no problem. I started out with just the camera mic, doing drum solos. Then I added a mixing board and mics to do covers, (without using speakers). I miked the drums into the board. The music also went through the board, so that drums and music were the board output into my camera input (mic) slot. You might try that approach if you have any mics. In your set-up, it looks like you could probably get away with a couple of overheads for the acoustic drums. A separate output from the electronic drums into the board would be ideal, but you could also crank up the monitor and record the electronic drums through the overheads as part of the acoustic kit if you had to. A separate music track input into the board would enable you to test the balance levels of drums and music. Then just put on headphones from the board and play! Anyway Tony, you have a great 4th of July holiday as well! Be safe! I'm in New York.
@kingcrimson234 Thanks! If Bruford ever did mess up, you'd never know because he'd simply adjust for it so it sounded like it's what he meant to do anyway! (Unless he's been messing up big time all these years and we just think he's so off-the-wall naturally great!) Collins is also one of my favorite drummers, and...he's a LEFTY (like me)!
I thought you'd appreciate that, Mike! Bring back memories? At least you got to play with UK. I'm stuck playing along with the stinkin' record!
Good selection. ..you've got it down. Nice chops. I heard them twice, but unfortunately after Bruford and Holdsworth had left. Nice Zappa influence in the presto part. If I had an ELP tribute band I think I'd have to play some UK too.
Giant congratulation! Outstanding drumwork! Excellent music - I like prog-symph rock - but very difficult to play, especially cover (not playing live with the band when You dictate the rhythm and changes). But You know well:)
Again the mini timbales are the top! And in the end the very smooth, very quick playing on the deep drums and rototoms.
(For me special pleasure to see lefthanded playing, I don,t have to change everything in mind:)
Love this kind of drumming! Bruford, Phil Collins/Brand X, Billy Cobham, Lenny White, etc...
Me too! Thanks.
Wow! Great compliment. Thank you very much!
Thanks, I love drums (i´m a drummer and professor), music and progresive rock. Congrutaletions!!
Thanks, Diego!
Do you have a facebook? (my english is bad, i´m from Chile)
Yes I do, but I had a problem on it so, I can only "friend" family members. Sorry!
17drums ok, i understand
@rolandvp Thanks, Ken! When Bruford left the band, Bozzio took over. And for some reason, neither of them played those quick Octaban notes in a live setting. (I think Bruford actually played it on DragonDrums on the album). To me, it just seems like an important part of the beat.
@GBWagner1 Thanks again, George! This is one of my favorite videos. It took alot of listening to, to pick it out. (I play totally by ear). There are a couple of small omissions, but for the most part, it's pretty faithful to the original. I made this video because in the other versions on TH-cam, (even those by Bruford and Bozzio), no-one includes those octabans (mini timbales), that are so prominent in the original studio version.
Awesome! I love UK! 5 stars
really good!!! you should be famous!!!!
By EARNING them, like everyone else. Your improv showed variety, technique and energy. I liked it.
@OfficialMarinaHodson Thanks! Paice is a great drummer and one of my early heroes too!
Well done, Dave! I have only heard the UK Live version of this, and haven't heard it in a LONG time, having lost the album, and can't find the CD! This is superb, and I love the work you are doing with your right hand! Terry Bozio is one of the toughest people to duplicate. I would like to see someone play along with "Alaska"Live, so I can see how one does those flamish-rolls he does around the toms,so fast. Something I haven't the patience to try! Again, EXCELLENT!!!!!!!
Once saw Larry Coryell, with Alphonse Mouson. GREAT show!
@OfficialMarinaHodson Hey Marina! Thanks for the great comments! Thank your dad too. It really is a great compliment coming from a drum teacher, (since I never took a lesson until last year, and simply fudged my way through learning the instrument). You're welcome on the singing compliments. Keep up the good work! Dave.
Nice work! Bruford is a giant to try and cover.
Thanks, Mickey!
@garay8008 Thanks! Yeah, I like Bozzio too. But UK is two different bands between Bozzio and Bruford, imo. So I covered 'The Only Thing She Needs' also to get both of them.
Thanks! Yeah, it's tough to get a good angle with a big set in a small room. You can see the beater head on the left pedal a little, but it's tough to follow. I just sent for a wide-angle lens. Hopefully, it'll get more limbs in future videos!
Thanks! And I love your guitar work. You earned my subscription, too!
17 drums. Good Question. Thank you for the confort de-zoning. Going to open up comments again and expand my ability to deal.
@birchofacookie Thanks. You do really have to listen hard to Bruford. His syncopations and off-times are very hard to feel naturally (for me, at least). So I have to memorize all the strokes. (And even then, I missed a few here!)
Thanks! I'm actually right-handed, but started playing lefty (self-taught) because I figured a fretboard and a keyboard both descended to the left, so shouldn't the drums? Didn't find out till much later, that I was playing "backwards"! Oh, well.
Nice one mate - keep it up!
Thanks! Yeah, UK was their name. It started with Bill Bruford on the drums on the first album. Then Terry Bozzio took over for the next one. And they also released a 'Live" album. I like the first album best, myself.
Thanks again. Yeah, I used one of my octabans. (I think Bruford played it on DragonDrums). That was one reason I decided to cover this song. It seems that everyone (of the few that have covered it), excluded that part that to me, kind of screams out at you. Even Bruford omits it when playing it live, (in all the videos I've seen at least).
good job on this song. bill bruford owns claim to some of the craziest drumming ever recorded. i don't think i've ever heard him mess up once, either. him and phil collins are my top 2 fave drummers. phil was awesome in early Genesis. his drumming was a little simplistic for a few years there, but by the time The Lamb came out he did some really awesome stuff. shame he started depending so much on drum machines later on. ack.
The problem for me with Tocatta, is that I don't have tympani, tuned bells, nor electronic drums, so as to even remotely simulate Palmer. And since Palmer's version has become the yardstick, so to speak, anything short of that would be very noticeable, and very likely to be trashed by the purists. I am currently working on covering their rarely heard, very aggressive, 1978 "live" version of Copland's 'Hoedown'. It's not yet been covered by anyone here on YT, (as far as I can find).
Thanks so much, yet again my friend! I wanted to do some tough drumming material (that hasn't been covered much, if at all on TH-cam), and in different styles of music to demonstrate my versatility for resume/job purposes. I plan to start playing out once I retire, (shortly). I figured I should at least lay the groundwork so other musicians can check out my work first. Says more about my playing than doing easy rock covers. (Still pissed about my ELP being pulled down by WMG!) Cheers!
I shall keep on training =P (however, if you've got advices, I'd be pleased to work on it!)
Well done Mr Becher! Just one minor suggestion, to wit: next time could you possibly nudge the camera a smidgeon to the right so that we might see more of your left foot in play? The audio is great but your syncopation is worthy of both sight and sound . . . Cheers!
That is completely insane Dave. How the hell do you learn things like that? 5 stars !
Amazing job!!! Wich kind of skin is mounted on rototoms?? The sound is 100%Bruffordian!..pls. let me know!!
Thanks, Al! I haven't had a comment on this video in quite awhile. The heads on the rototoms are Remo Black Dots. There is also some muting (synthetic roofing rubber), to kill the overtones and some of the ring.
nice job!!
I like Allan Holdsworth on Expresso 2 by GONG, U.K. this was yet another one of those overlooked records I found at Skeleton Records in Birkenhead, it was over 20 years ago but they were priced at 49p..... Still recall those heady days of school life in Thatcherite Britain, 34p for 10 No.6 and 16p for chips, walk home.. Oh yeah Skellies, 49p records, The 11th House with Larry Coryell, Offramp by Pat Metheny the Inner Mounting Flame, Steps Ahead,"Heavy Metal BeBop".. the list goes on..........
excellent!
Thanks!
You are awesome! Do you like Bozzio?
Thanks! Just keep practicing and you should be better than me in no time! I'm right-handed, but play lefty.
Thanks, Steve. The original studio version I was playing to here, had Bill Bruford drumming. Bruford played a much finer, syncopated beat than did Bozzio. Bozzio was more flair and chops. I'm going to post a Bozzio UK cover next summer.
Very nice, as usual.
Sorry for the long wait on the reply, but my Fibes kit is clear w/ a black wrap on the inside. I'd like to take the black wrap off, but I'm not sure on how to remove the glue from the shells safely, and I'm sure the shells are scratched all to hell. The former owner(s) did NOT do a good job taking care of them :( Sound good though.
How different do your drums sound in the room compared to your videos?
@ScalerWave Thanks!
Thanks, Kerry. I never got to see them play, but I did catch ELP quite a few times. Funny how you mention the Zappa influence in the presto part (played by Bruford), when his replacement was Bozzio! Good luck to you. Everyone go check out Kerry's ELP videos before they get yanked by WMG. Go NOW!
Over 100 comments and no mention of Eddie Jobson who created this masterpiece. The 'Zappa influence' was Jobson's deliberate tribute to Frank who he had played with immediately before forming UK with Bruford and Wetton.
@@artrock5741 Great to know. You're right. I like Zappa, but I'm not a big fan. Had no idea of the Jobson connection. Thanks for pointing it out.
Thanks! What kind of finish is on the Fibes kit you're buying?
Thanks!
Wow.. smokin !
Sweet!
Wow, Thanks!
Thanks, Joe! (But there is ALOT I can't do. The real trick is discovering what that is!)
Jeez, Bruford's hard to learn. Nice job.
Bruford is such a fun drummer to play to...:)..I learned a lot about off beat stuff...
Agreed. Bruford is a master of syncopation. Odd time signatures are his forte.
@@17drums :)...Thanks for the reply...His snare always sounded so sweet too! ...:)...Not sure if that's eddie Offord' engineering or just his tuning.. His work with Crimso is very inspiring as well...I think that's where I picked up many of his cool chops...
@@godbluffvdgg Bruford was known for his rim-shot snare strokes, so I'm sure that added to his great sound.
@@17drums He sure is...The rimshots on Roundabout are so tasty...I tune my snare to that...I'm checking your other stuff, this morning...Who's your most influential drummer?
@@godbluffvdgg Carl Palmer for doubles and rudimentary drum corps stuff; Bill Bruford for syncopation and odd-time signatures; Billy Cobham for power singles and basic animalism, and Buddy Rich for all of the above plus everything else.
Awesome job! Sounds a little like something like Dixie Dreggs.
:)
@kingcrimson234 Uk had the best ever drummers, Bruford and Bozzio, saw Bozzio live with Missing Persons in the 80's, and i will never see a better live drummer, played 2 basses effortlessly, never missed a beat, killed it
Thanks! Yeah, unlike some (lesser) drummers, Bruford forces you to count.
@dhoudedrums Thanks, Dan!
Thanks! Just watched your latest posting, Drum Solo #1. EXCELLENT! How come you've disabled comments? I'll bet you'd get a ton of positive ones on that video. Just subbed, in fact.
Check out my 5 'Training' videos. Maybe they'll have something you can use? Good luck to you! (And thanks for the good comments!)
@duncanparsons Thanks for the info!
the name of this band is UK? shit that sounds pretty good
@zarwarrior Thanks!
@nuthoose Thanks!
I'd like to meet guys like you because trying to find able prog musicians is so difficult. I feel keyboards is a dying instrument and it seems that trying to find guitarists that want to play this stuff is also just as frustrating. Guitarists seem to think tbhthey are the only one's that write!
+Daniel Rampazzo Thank you! Personally, I've always preferred keys in a band over guitars. Keys can do so much more. (And it's been my experience that keys and guitar usually clash in personalities, creating a lot of tension, or even a break-up of the band).
Thanks, but it's not a fair comparison--considering that I've been playing for more than twice as long as you've been alive! (If you're 15). Just keep practicing and I'm sure you'll blow me away some day soon.
No problem.
good, but keep triying, brufford its hard
Ha! Just remember one thing, the world is full of haters and morons, so it's inevitable that you'll encounter them every now and then on your channel. Everyone does. But once you consider the source, you won't feel the sting. Just don't respond to them, or you'll start a war. That's what they live for. Let other viewers who appreciate your work, fight that battle. And they will, at times. They have for me. Good luck, buddy!
That,s why I suggest You always to interprete (not "only" cover) Toccata. You could do that even better than Palmer, I,m absolutely sure.
I haven't seen a mediocre left handed drummer yet. Well played.
Thanks, Pedro!
Killer
Thanks!
Fantastic! I sent you a message and friend request on FB. I hope to hear from you!
dmanster Thanks, Dennis! Regarding the FB request, I had a big problem there once, and now only "friend" family to keep up with. I hope you're not offended. I see you've got lots of live performances on your channel. Playing out is the best. Just subbed!
17drums If you are in the SoCal area and want to play in a UK Tribute band, let me know. Probably only 3-4 times a year. Thanks.
If I move out there, I'll definitely look you up brother. There can't be too many UK Tributes around!
love It
Thanks!
Thanks!
