Monaco is the wealthiest nation in the world per capita. It's also the country with by far the highest average age of citizens. It has the highest cost of land of any country in the world, it pretty much breaks any kind of list you want to make ranking countries cause you can pretty much bet that this 2 square kilometer spit of land off the south of France is going to win any economic top ten list out there.
So, what is really going on with the economy of Monaco?
Most people know it as a playground for the rich and famous, a parking garage for superyachts, a glorified formula 1 track, a country built around a casino, and above all else, a tax haven. But is this criticism really fair? ... let's explore in today's video!

@@리주민 the vat gets passed along to the custommer, but the companies still have to pay Back to the state the 27% they received from the customers every month. And they still have to compete at prices with products from other states. And it's difficult for a small company to have a 27% chunk of their added value ripped away every month. It really fucks the cash flow. So, as i know, a lot of hungarians incorporate their companies in slovakia for example. So it's not good for the hungarian economy. But as far as i know, the prime minister has some big interests in some big companies, and he really doesn't want much competition.

There's too many subjective variables for a comparison like this to ever work. Just because a country has a high HDI index, it isn't the best place in the world to live. Some people value career opportunities more than others. Some people like having just one season a year. Some people don't mind paying high taxes. Bla bla bla.
As for moving to Norway, or any other country for that matter, I know from experience that the grass is always greener on the other side. If you genuinely want to find the best place to live (for you ;)), you'll have to move around and explore.

A few things missing here to understand Monaco.
First, there are reduced tax rates on some products, like food (10%) and medicine (10-2.1%).
So a higher tax is levied on a new super car than a pizza, which will make a difference for the “regular Monégasques”.
Then there’s a big difference between Monaco resident and citizen. Basically none of the rich people living there hold the passport. Citizens have large subsidies available to be able to live there, like for real estate. Residents pay full rate, but also need to prove they can afford to live in Monaco (minimum holdings in a Monaco bank).
Then the economy is very interesting because Monaco helps maintain the local economy in the south of France’s off-season. Because residents need to stay there a certain amount of the year to avoid being taxed elsewhere, there’s activity all year around. Something like 40,000 workers come in and out every day from France and Italy.
So that’s a few more things that make Monaco quite unique...

    • @EconomicsExplained
      @EconomicsExplained  5 ปีที่แล้ว +37

Manual calculation using the UN's data. This is probably the best estimation of how it is achieved
HDI is calculated using three indices and each of those indices can be over 1, which means that the final HDI can also be over 1.
The Life Expectancy Index is scaled from 0 (life expectancy of 20) to 1 (life expectancy of 85). If a country has a life expectancy of over 85 then its LEI will be over 1.
The Education Index is based on the Mean Years of Schooling Index and the Expected Years of Schooling Index. MYSI is 1 when people are in education for 15 years on average and EYSI is 1 when people are expected to be in education for 18 years.
Income Index is 1 when GNI per capita is $75,000. Incomes over this will result in a II of over 1.

VAT is indeed the right tax because it does incentivise you to earn more so it impacts you less, certainly it is harsh on the lower income individuals, but it is fair in the sense that "the more you consume, the more you pay in VAT tax"
any country that taxes you artificially "just" because you earn more than someone else, is destined to have its rich people look for loopholes and move elsewhere.

You described Monaco's VAT rate as exceptionally high, but every country in Europe except Andorra, Lichtenstein and Switzerland (and Jersey if you want to count them) are within a few percentage points of Monaco's 20%
Furthermore, the VAT rates is most countries in Africa and the Americas are over 15%.
This doesn't really take away from your point, as the lack of income tax is the big draw for the wealth that gathers in the nation, but I thought it might be helpful to point out.

a VAT tax isn't a regressive tax but rather a flat tax. The example in the video only explains that living expenses account for a smaller percentage of the total expenditures in rich households, compared to poorer households. You could say that a VAT tax has a disproportionate effect, however that effect wouldn't be benefiting those who make more, but rather those who use/consume less products in that market.

The UK is 20% VAT flat rate on all goods and services with a very small number of exceptions such as heating fuel which is 5%.
There's also loads of other taxes here in the UK but there given many different names.
    Fuel Duty
Roughly 110% depending on the supplier but is a set figure rather then an actual percentage of £0.5795 per litre for normal and bio fuels, LPG is £0.3161 per kg. VAT is the added on top at sale.
    Income tax
Based on what you earn annually, the more you earn the higher percentage you pay.
    For the 2019-2020 tax year
Personal allowance - £0-12,500 = 0% (this is taken off all your earnings upto a max of £125000, above this level of earning your not entitled to a personal allowance)
    Basic rate - £12,501-50,000 = 20%
    Higher rate - £50,001-150,000 = 40%
    Additional rate - over £150,000 = 45%
    Other forms of taxes are
💥Vehicle Exercise Duty - used to be called Road Tax, varies car to car
💥National Insurance - paid by both employee(2-12%) and employer(13.85%) per employee based on there annual income
💥Council tax - based on you house and where you live
💥Business rates - based on a businesses value
    💥Corporation tax - based on a businesses profits (19%)
💥Sin tax - based on the amount of sugar a drink contains
There's probably many more but I can't think of any at the moment but basically in the UK we pay a lot of tax, not sure how that compares to other countries though

Or just realize that hierarchies of any sort will ALWAYS exist within humanity and competitiveness will always be nature to the species of homo sapiens. Better to embrace that and let smaller nations compete with who gives its citizens the best living conditions instead of otherwise inevitably becoming destructive hierarchies and also having one huge, extremely corrupt and instable government (only possible with a total dictatorship).
Your complete lack of understanding of pure basic sociology, economics and general logic is baffling.

uhh, no. Wealth is built by building/making something people want and then making sure the government doesn't get its grubby hands on it.

@@joshn2342323 ... From resources appropriated from someone. The 'government'' is the appropriator. Government is in ALL systems. The Systems of governance vary. Piracy is a dominate form. The agency is always people. Look up Prato as to why wealth creates poverty - you are right that the creation of wealth can reduce absolute poverty but not always.
