@@zenda40 i genuinely dont know why ppl are relating this to bhutto. From zulfiqar to bilawal (yes including benazir) were staunch corrupts who swayed the constitution to their own likings. We lost east because bhutto was not ready to accept his defeat. I just pointed that constitution should be uphold as is. In theory it would be the best for people. Even islam orders to consult when making decisions. Constitution is made when the opposition also agrees to it. And then there are people who protest if something is odd in constitution like maddudi. While in martial law, there is a supreme authority that decides what is wrong and what is right. If he considers zina legal it would be legal. Just check how we consider Musharraf a war hero when in reality he sold innocents to usa, took us into war on terror. Ppl feared at the time if we dont provide bases, they will adk india. But they say time is the best teacher, when imran said absolutely not, they dint go to india to ask for bases, they went to tajikistan inspite of them signing a defence treaty with india(most probably for china) but india had interest in Afghanistan but strategically they had go pass pakistan air. Army is made to defend and their mindset is based on the idea of war, not diplomacy.one can say we build all dams in ayub khan era forgetting that it was due to indus water treaty . Bhutto was corrupt feudal but why did zia wait for his death, he could have created a new govt earlier. No businesses came to pakistan as they were scared of diktat. The economic growth in Musharraf was due to foreign aids of war on terror. You might have studied history how easily Musharraf accepted all the 7 condition that even usa dint accept. Zia was no shaheed but a corrupt ruler who enjoyed the luxury he ordained not be indulged in. See how the image of army improved post Musharraf. All in all we are using internet and sitting safely at home just because constitution exist

Wow, don't you think Ayyub Khan regieme was Illegitimate? Yet pakistan made more progress in the 1960's alone than it made during the last four decades. Pakistan's western belt had long been a part of the "great game". The massive influx of pashtuns from Afghanistan could result in another "Fall of Dhaka", aka the "Fall of Peshawar" as the soviets were close allies of India at the moment and Pashtunistan movement still had its roots in the hardline pashtun community. Zia tactfully saved Pakistan from disintegration, suported the Pro Pakistan Afghan Mujahideen, Even according to some reports pakistan army and PAF was actively involved in fighting the soviets.
We were in a bad shape then, the Infamous Nationisation movement of the Bhutto period was what dragged this country into depths of economic instability. Industries were Nationalised, banks were nationalised, economic progress was brought to a standstill. This is what injected corruption into our society. When a government officer, whose salary is just about the same as any other middle class citizen, is made responsible for the earlings of an entire factory which is producing a revenue of millions, what would you expect? When the state is bleeding resources to sustain these once profitable businesses, what direction would you expect the economy to head towards? When private businesses are being forcibly taken over by the government, who in his right mind would invest in such a country?
The war in Afghanistan brought in AK-47 culture. The war in Afghanistan brought in opium trade. The war in Afghanistan was what brought in daily suicide bombings and stuff. It was impossible for anyone to guard the durand line that stretches well over 2,000 km. This is what ruined the economy.
Yes, Zia supported MQM, that was a tactical maneuver as well, lots of Afghanistan Muhajireen, many were good people looking for shelter but a few individuals who moved and settled into Karachi were working with anti state agencies. The Metropolitian that was once known as the city of lights was still lit, but with suicide bombs. Target killngs and all kinds of stuff was brought into the Industrial hub of a pakistan that was recovering from the wound of a recent war that took away the majority of its Population, and an area roughly the size of sindh, a pakistan that was makig space to accommodate the extremely loyal Bihari Pakistanis from East Pakistan, a Pakistan that was fighting a war of survival, trying to protect the country from further disintegration, a Pakistan that was fighting a war in the east, a war in the west and a war inside. Read a bit of history before criticising people who did more for this country than you could ever think of.

There are people in Pakistan who love him; his piety, role in helping Afghans fight the soviets with the help from US and Arab countries. I had family members who loved Zia as he was someone who brought "law and order" into the country esp after a tumultuous and traumatic Zulfi Bhutto era. However, there are people (and I am in that group too), who believe he was a cunning military tactician who used sectarianism (along ethnic and religious lines) as well as corruption (nepotism, political favoritism-Pakistan got an inept idiot leader like Nawaz Sharif) to further his political agenda. This sectarianism and corruption, which got its hold during Zia's time, has been been exploited by Pakistan's enemies both internally (inept politicians and some military folks) as well as Pakistan's external enemies. The fallout from all of this is something that people of Pakistan and its society has had to suffer from for the past 30+ years.

The real truth of Zia plane crash was when an Israel jet plane was shot down over Syria with a stinger missile which at that time only USA and Pakistan Army had them. Pakistan Army had stocked all the stingers at Ojri Camp Rawalpindi from where they used to supply them to Afghan Mujahidins in exchange of empty/used stinger missile to maintain the record of the stinger missile. When the inspectors were due to visit Ojri Camp to check the counting of the stinger missiles army blew the whole Camp making the inspectors suspicious of Pakistan involvement in distributing the stingers all around and that the only reason behind his plane crash.
