I have a soft spot in my heart for reel to reel tape machines. My grandfather gave me my very first machine a Sony with detachable speakers and 2 little microphones. ❤🎚🎧

This is a great collection. I sure hope you manage to find a permanent home for it some day while preserving the functioning status of all these wonderful machines. Since the main part of the collection is American and Japanese, I do hope some early RCA tape decks are added - when you have the room for them! I love those early Ampex machines and I was really glad I found out about the Magnasync machines - they are very impressive indeed!
I think all this accumulated knowledge of this technology, it's history, professional usage and practical aspects might best be "recorded" in a book. A DVD is much easier to produce and distribute but I think a lot more people would purchase a book (the DVD could be added as a bonus in it perhaps). I know there's probably a lot of books already on the subject but I think your perspective is both unique and (surely) very valuable.
Good luck with restoring the Ampex 200 (?) tape recorder to its former (original) glory!

Very interesting exhibition. 4 years ago I was lucky to purchase a ReVox A77 Mk IV 2-track Dolby recorder from 1978 (!). It was in its original crate and had never been used until that day. All the capacitors needed to be replaced, but now it is as if it was brand new. I really love this machine and I use it on a daily basis.
I also have an A88 and a Grundig TK23 automatic, both of which work well. The TK30 needs a set of new tubes, but should work as well. I think RTR tape recorders will never die out completely. There are too many lovers of those dinosaurs out there...

I cant get enough of this stuff. Vintage audio gear is (in my opinion) superior to digital and absolutely nothing is made like these vintage items.
In 60 years, how much digital stuff will still be operational or even desirable. I dont think anyone will look back to 2020 and say "digital was so much better back then".

Thank you very much for what you are doing and the enthusiastic dedication. I wish you were in Yorkshire, England. But just as long as I know its being done thats wonderful. I think Texas and Yorkshire should be Twinned. Cheers.

The non-profit entity dissolved: In December 2017, after five years of working to create a permanent public non-profit museum, the Board decided we'd had given it our best effort and the non-profit was dissolved. Some of the significantly valuable vintage devices that had been donated to the Museum were purchased by the Theophilus permanent collection owners. Other donated items were sold to interested parties and the remaining funds donated to the non-profit "Swan Songs." The non-profit museum ceased to exist on December 31, 2017

I commend your work. A fabulous and informative collection. A few notes: At 2:15, the machine is an Ampex AG350, not an AG300. At 2:30 the portable Ampex 400 was model 400A. At 16:15, the upgrade Ampex offered replacing the original 200A electronics with the 300 electronics, also converted the machine from emulsion out wind to emulsion in wind, by replacing the original head assembly with a 300 type, and the machine was also modified to run at both 15 ips as well as the original 30 ips. The entire upgrade converted the machine to what Ampex designated as the model 201. At 17:20, the electronics on the Ampex 300 transport are from an Ampex 400 console machine, models 402 and 403. At 19:25 Mitsubishi digital format was Pro-Digi, not Pro Logic. Pro Logic was a Dolby surround film sound process. I hope you have succeeded in locating the interconnect cables.

Thank you for the corrections. The missed AG350 was what happens when you try to video on the fly. So our 400A has the left hand drive, however this particular unit did not have the push buttons seen on other 400s. Still haven't had time to try and get it operating.
I debated about installing the 300 electronics in the 300 and replacing the 400 (which is how it came when we bought it from the Leo de Gar Kulka estate with the 200A), or leaving it with the 200A. The refurbished 300 amp was bought later. On our Ampex web site page, you'll see we've also obtained the skeleton of the original 200A electronics, or it's a "home brew" of the electronics. museumofmagneticsoundrecording.org/RecordersAmpex200A.html
And sadly the X-80 is gone (never found cables). . Due to a lack of interest and donations, the non-profit permanent museum facility could not be created and was dissolved in December 2017. We wish there had been a better outcome. The private collection will go from over 200+ tape recorders to about 75 of the most historically important. We are working to insure the web site remains as long as possible.
Thank you again for taking the time to write. Cheers! Martin

@@MartinTheophilus Thanks for the reply. I remember reading of the closing of the museum. A shame it had to go. 75 machines is still quite a collection! All the best.

Repair Services: Unfortunately the Museum does not provide operation consultation, manuals, parts, sales recommendations, nor repair services. Nor have we tracked service facilities.
We’ve often found parts on eBay and sometimes bought a used machine to repair, or obtain a part. Search for the part you need. If it doesn’t show up immediately save the search and eBay will send you an email when it’s available.
We highly recommend Audio Electronics, 10870 Plano Rd. Suite C, Dallas, TX 76238, 800-466-2372 or 214-349-5000. They have provided excellent service on vintage equipment. They’ve repaired several of our Teac units.
Here are several Austin, Texas options: Tapehead Electronics, Atomic Tube (tube units only) and Austin Stereo.
Studio Electronics in CA service some of Austin’s pro machines.

The machine that Jennifer refers to was badged 3M but, surprise surprise! Was made by Mitsubishi,it had that typical digital treble tinny tone listen to The Album Rise especially the track Behind The Rain ,which was recorded by the same , Mr Alpert soon returned to analogue thereafter, they always do

Maybe there are so few Tandbergs here that no one wants to give them up. I want to keep mine. The specs on Tandbergs were almost twice the quality of any other comparable machines. I got a Studer in for restoration and its midrange was a bit bright and hard in comparison to my Tandberg TD20A.

Hi, enjoyed the vids. Why did you not mention Grundig or Ferragragh.

    • @daviddrake7003
      @daviddrake7003 6 ปีที่แล้ว

corocoro4 I think he showed a Grundig on the 2nd video. And also a Tandberg but not the TD-20A SE. I use to have service for Revox and Teac ( among many many others) and I have one. If tweaked to a knots eyebrow with scope and distortion analyzer and fine tuned by ear on live instruments with Stax electrostatic earspeakers, it is a glory to hear!!! I use it with Audio Research electronics and Beveridge Model 3 Electrostatic Audio Transducers.

Must have missed them. We have Willie Studer's rare original T-26 Revox created in 1948. We have the Revox A-77 which is displayed with its matching Tuner A-76 and Amplifier A-78. The Revox B77 MKII is in the collection. Our collection also has the Studer B67 and the Studer A807. This is Part 3 of 3 videos.

More than likely it has more to do with the cameras microphone and youtube audio.
