The helmet and the breastplate are a possible historical configuration. Just because something was old didn´t mean it wasn´t used anymore, it could be your great grandfathers or someting like that.

On the rest you either can't tell because of lack of detail or there's something in the way. Though some are definitely the big frogmouths they look to be mostly scenes depicting duels not battlefields. Not saying it was never done but probably mostly some having throat sliced phobic people wore them to battle.

I am not shure what you mean. I thought that with your response you wanted to prove the og. comment that jousting frogmouths sk.pinterest.com/pin/569564684117077277/ were readily used outside of jousting
The video you shared (btw thanks it's interesting) is about a different type of helmet. The great basinet which is not atached to armor. Also the one in the video is the only exemplar this big while others from this fammily have plates more modest.
From what i understand fixed frogmouth is quite common tournament helmet which has little use on foot because you're useles if you can't move your head. I agree that on few of shared pics are depicting the outside of jousting use of jousting frogmouth i , og and (i assume) Metatron talked about.
But as i said the context of those seem to be duels not battles. On the rest of them are depicted Great Bascinet's with frogmouth visor/faceplate(not shure if it's a correct term) and normal Bascinets with frogmouth visor.

Hello Metatron. Could you analyse "Caesars legion" from Fallout: New Vegas and sort of rate how roman they are?
Quick Summary: The world got destroyed through nuclear war, the suvivers struggle living in the wasteland. On man that calls himself Caesar now, trys to rebuild a society based on the romans. He counquered 86 different tribes, unifiyng them. The legion gets generally portrayed as bad guys, mostly because of their slavery, violence, executions and zero tolerance to anyone not sharing their ideals.
Also if the roman empire would have used similiar tactics, in regard of the advanced technology. For example: The legion is known to booby trap places they raided with mines. Legion recruits use mostly melee weapons, higher ranks often ballistic guns and the praetorian guard uses ballistic fists, basically a super advanced mechanical gauntlet that also shoots shotgun ammuniton.
This is a larger project because there is so much lore, ecpecially if you are unfamiliar with Fallout: New Vegas. But it would be very intresting to see how accurate Caesar build his society.

Metatron: apologises for a slight anachronism between helm and breastplate.
Hollywood: what about a fully armoured knight with a machine gun? Who would notice?

    •  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

That would actually be a pretty good idea for a show. The idea of medieval people discovering paratime travel _and exploiting it_ is such an untapped idea in fiction these days.
I can see the opening shot now.
_A 12th century English baron strides into the great hall of his castle. He's just come back from a gun show, gun nestled in one shoulder and two bags slung over the other. One's filled with enough bullets to shoot everyone in the castle and the surrounding village ten times over. After setting that one down, he walks into his bedchamber, where he takes his Medieval-to-Modern English dictionary out of the remaining bag and sets it gingerly back into his bookshelf._
_This haul is much like many he's made over the past, and he'll certainly be making a few more such trips in the weeks before he and his retinue muster at London, where they will join the dozens of other barons waiting to ship out to Aquitaine, where king Richard and his Crusading army await them._
_With any luck, every baron would be able to field a full gun battalion. In fact, rumor had it king Richard had bought enough machine guns for a full chariot company._
      See, the possibilities are endless!

If I remember my Strategikon correctly, the Roman cataphracts (and other especially well-equipped soldiers) used a mail aventail that could be raised over the face before battle, with a steel collar reinforcing the throat (adapted from Avar practice, like much of the kit of the late antique and early medieval cataphract).

  • @jnlarge7244
    @jnlarge7244 4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

So it's obviously different from a gorget, but isn't it possible to thrust through mail? And wouldn't the force alone of a direct strike to the throat break your windpipe?
(Edit) I know armor obviously provides a lot of protection, but the neck just seems very vulnerable to brute force, which is why I'm confused as to the effectiveness of a mail collar. Perhaps the user is a competent fighter and makes it difficult for his opponent to land a thrust, but even a well placed cut could break someone's neck. I love history, and If anyone has any insight I would really appreciate it

The thing that went through my mind, is any blow to the throat can kill if it causes the Adam's apple to swell. Chain stops cuts and piercing damage reasonably well but does little against for example a light military pick(or hammer) to the throat in terms of impact damage. I would have thought that some sort of plate armour would be far more effective at protecting from impact damage. However I am under the impression some knights were more interested in how something looked than it's protective value.

  • @robertoprestigiacomo253

I think they would use linen hems.
My personal rationale for it is that in combat you'd sweat a lot and after different cycles of wetting and drying out the leather would become more stiff and likely to tear apart here and there and so would be very uncomfortable to wear. Also leather tends to come in with time so even though it won't be enough to choke you, it would change the shape of the edge and result in even more discomfort.

    • @positroll7870
      @positroll7870 4 ปีที่แล้ว

The word hauberk is derived from the German / Old Frankish word Halsberge / halsberg. Originally described a small piece of mail that protects ("bergen", literally "to give protection, to save, to rescue") the throat and the neck (the "Hals").
A hauberk is thus originally a "throat/neck protector".

there HAS to be a paded cloth garment for the neck, underneath the throat mail protector, or its basically useless, you can get a spike right through those holes, without dealing with the the rings themselves, and any impact would be felt directly on the windpipe or neck.
it also doesnt look right, much like how aventails that oldschool reenactors used to wear didnt look like the ones in the artwork. it doesnt have that volume.

Hey can you make a video where it shows how long a knight can get ready for battle? (Such as how long it take to wear the armor and others)

My comment on that leather frilly thing. I've studied a little bit on the similarities between untrained children drawing, and medieval drawings. In my opinion that artwork is trying to depict quilted padded armour on the inside of the mail, not a decorated edging (though some sort of edging was probably there too)

im pretty sure i tried a iron shoulder mail piece at a renaissance fair as a kid, maybe it was a neck piece i was skinny, thing weighed probably 25 pounds.

In most cases I would go for mail. I like to wear my armor a lot (in light configuration). I simply love the feeling, I love the looks, if I would want to mix it up with throat protection, I would go for mail. Even for training sessions I would go for mail. I have a relatively big motorcycle but I still have very limited space, so mail is my main pick. Though for a tournament or battle, I would go for plate, unless I would have no other choice.

About armor and different time periods: the modern army is using 70 year old B52 bombers. The German army is partly using 60 year old MG3s. Etc. Im certain that back then there was a century old equipment still floating around in active use, maintained or repurposed.

Is the barbute supposed to be that tight fitting? I mean his chin sticks out from underneath the helm. If I'd wear one I'd like a bit more space in there for padding around the head...but that might just be me.

Interestingly the upgraded Cat School armor (which I believe is supposed to be a brigandine) in the Witcher 3 includes a mail collar. Looks a lot better than the biker style witcher armors

    Alius magnus opus care magister!
I think the leather part is made by mountain goats or buffalo leather, what was the best useable material on the 17. century buff coats of the thirty years war or English civil war for example.
Another alternatives maybe the sail canvas what was a fkexible and durable product on ships for centuries.

    Hi Metatron thanks for sharing!
I think it would be even better if you can also explain why it is called standard, or what is the connection between the meaning of today's "standard" and the old days.

Could the mail standard been used by ca. 1280 and 1307 AD

Did you say that you should be getting your knights armor in February? That's AWESOME! I can't wait to see it! I hope someday to get my own suit of armor but I have to make enough book sells first before I can afford it.

I dont know if you will get the chance but a brigandine style collar seems cool. Similar to the types you see in the chinese and mongolian style brigandines

Interresting as always, I really like plate armour but yes the mobility could be a factor. I have seen some sort of mail collar in Witcher 3 on the Cat-School Armour. Would be interresting to see how accurate the Armour-Sets in Witcher 3 are.

I know the dating is somewhat questionable.. But the mail of Wenceslaus I of Bohemia, from (potentially) the early 900s had a similar collar century and a half before norman conquest of Britain. Thoughts?

  • @rileyernst9086

Even if you had access to plated neck protection, during light skirmishing actions etc a knight might choose a maile standard instead. Most of warfare is not combat, and most of combat is not a field battle with two armies going at it head to head, therefore you do see knights trading off protection for comfort, mobility and situational awareness.
