As someone who tried to learn western sheet music but hated it because of how confusing it was, I love qin notation! It looked super complicated at first but it actually makes a lot more sense to me than western music notation. I also already know a lot of Chinese characters from studying Japanese so It makes even more sense how the characters are arranged. I’m seriously considering buying a qin now
i was just rewatching The Untamed yesterday and wondered about the book lan wangji to play the guqin. this is so so interesting to learn. it seems so difficult, but you make it seems so elegant.
I am a bass player and I must confess, I love the sound of the Guqin. It reminds me a lot of the sound of a fretless bass, which is my favourite version of the instrument. I would love to have and learn to play the Guqin but unfortunately we don't have them in Brazil and to buy one from abroad is very expansive, but who knows, maybe some day!
I'm so grateful for this video! I'm attempting to learn how to play this beautiful instrument but there are not very many recourses that explain it so clearly and easily like you do here. I know this isn't the main focus of your channel but if you ever desire to share some more about how to play or learn more about qin I'm sure I won't be the only one grateful. Once again, thank you very much!!!
Hi vveredragon, I share your feelings about the video, and I am also trying to teach myself theguqin, without a teacher , because there are none here. However I stumbled on this channel which clearly shows the hand positioning left and right while playing the “the untamed” scores. If you are into the untamed scores. This might interest you. Hope this reply gets, to you, i am not very familiar yet with commenting on videos. Good luck with your studies. th-cam.com/channels/v-EBQEmX2Avjy3x_mb3UNQ.html
I also started learning how to play from my love of cdramas and there is literally one good book in English but my gripe is lack of notation for cdramas scores that isn't modernized that I can find. Mostly because I don't know how to read music period. Learning guqin notation was surprisingly easy for me because of that though.
This is actually fascinating, when i first saw the characters I thought it meant one thing, little did i know it is key information for the placement of your left and right hand. This is very unique
the untamed blooper inclusion at the end is hilarious. I bet they didn't realize the camera angle even caught that much of the page lol awesome video! as a western-trained musician, this was very eye-opening!
Hi AvenueX, I have practiced the this line of music now, on my qin, for 1-2 hrs. And (surprisingly) qin music is flowing out, which sounds like the first line of the Untamed, which makes me happy. It is not very smooth yet, but will keep at it. I wouldnt have been able to do it without your instruction video. Up to now i have only been able to play this tune on the violin.
This is amazing! It’s so much more simple to read than the current western notation. That system just messes with my mind, I have to rememorize it all everytime I have to use it, or keep counting lines. This way is just so much more clearer, like a simple code.
Hey AvenueX: Great video, but here's a bit of mythbusting: Guqin is not the only instrument to use fingering-based jianzipu. The 25-stringed Se (and subsequently guzheng), and woodwind instruments such as di/xiao/xun/chi also used to have their own jianzi system. The pipa, OTOH, are among the first instruments in China to implement a pitch-based written music that doesn't use the pitch names itself. Look up "Suzipu" 俗字譜 for more information. This system eventually evolved into the Gongche 工尺 notation used for most instruments and opera.
My guqin is arriving in a few days time and I can't wait to start to learn it. I heard the instrument in a CD my Nana has and then again when watching The Untamed. I couldn't stop dreaming that I had one, so I took it as a sign and went for it! Love a good challenge
Thank you much for this tutorial, where you demo how to play a part of the untamed on the guqin. The untamed soundtrack, made me fall in love with the beautiful tranquil sound of the guqin. So much so that i actually acquired a guqin and am now teaching myself how to play it. With help of youtube and a good book.(standards of the guqin by Juni L. Yueng). I have some music experience so hopefully not a complete lost cause. Unfortunately in my part of the eu, where i live, guqin teachers are non existant :-( . Since i love the untamed music, i am going to use your demo, to practice, to see if i understand the theory! Thanks again!
Wow, respect! Teach oneself a music instrument is hard not to mention it’s a unusual one, good luck with learning and if you ever travel to China, you can perhaps find a teacher to take a look at your playing
This is exactly why I wanted to start learning this and how I'm gonna do it bc I'm in the eu too and it was already hard enough to even find somewhere to buy a guqin so there's probably no way to find a teacher here😭😂
This is the same as me, unless you live in London, access to a teacher is nonexistent! I also love the sound and had forgotten untill I watched the untamed and it all came back. Now I have more time, I'm going to try
Thanks so much! Spending time copying out these notations by hand to learn them. The copy I got from my instructor is much more difficult to read. Thank you so much for your care and time!
I just got my qin, and this video popped up when I was looking for notations for the guqin. This was really helpful :D And even better with the song from The Untamed. ^_^ Thank you for this very valuable information
I started learning the qin last week and now I am truly enchanted by this instrument. Thank you for making these videos, it helps a lot with getting to know the basics!
Thanks for the video. I'm still learning my guzheng but would like to okayy guqin in a few years. I find that there's not enough English videos and clear explanation videos for us visual learners in high quality as well due to the language barriers. I'll come back to this when the time comes!
Omg that's so cool o.O I decided to start learning how to play the guqin a few days ago (ngl it's bc of the untamed) and ordered one but just now found out there's a different notation system which made me scared for a second but actually the system behind it is pretty easy and logic so I guess I'll use the time until my guqin arrives to memorize this stuff😂 you explained it very well thank you!
ive been interested in guqin for quite a while and i cant find a place to purchase and learn how to play it in my country T___T this video really makes me want to learn about it more, keep the good work up! your videos are as beautiful as yourself and your musics!
Woah this was so cool and indeed unique. I fell in love with the sound of this instrument since hearing it in cql so knowing how it works was really interesting. Thank you! Love your videos♡
I actually was looking about the quqin I always loved the instrument and I think I really want to learn it this is really helpful I find the sheet music the most confusing
Damn these dramas .. my girlfriends loves it, and it seems now I have to learn play guqin. Well at least with guides like this, it's gonna be easy ! :-D
well.. this is gonna be harder than i thought LOL. i have no problem with the notes, it's the finger movements.. crazy how it shows you how to play with your hands too. thought it was a matter of preference the whole time i saw people play
Wow very cool video as always AvenueX. I always wanted to see more of you playing guqing, especially playing an ost from a drama :D I learnt this song on the dizi, quqing seems more difficult!
Super interesting!!! This is the vid I needed that I didn"t think I need. Haha. Now where to find Qin here... So does Wang Yibo do a job on the show? Lol
Some how, me, an untamed fan, searched this out mostly* for musical curiosity and was not expecting to find wei ying here!! *...and so I can have the page from the book of turmoil lurking in a video background
Hi, this is a really good tutorial! I just started playing the guqin- I'm wondering what yours is tuned to? I do not have a guqin tuner and am using a piano tuner to tune my guqin currently, would it work? I have my strings as 1=C, 2=E, 3=F, 4=G, 5=A, 6=C, 7=D based on piano tuner. However, when I play what you're playing it sounds a little bit off but playing other tutorials it sounds similar-- wondering whether you have your guqin tuned differently?
I've been watching you for years but don't know how I missed this video. I know it's random but could I have the name of your "blazer" so that I can search for it online? Thank you so much for your content.
Wowww. This is super exciting to learn abt!! Thank u for sharing. Just a quick question of mine, how did people know how to play the rhythm if there wasn’t any note abt it in the jian zi pu?
As a Qin learner, I'm so happy you introduced Qin to English speaking people and your introduction was very easy to understand.
So cool. Love nerding out about music. So glad you used The Untamed as an example 😊

I'm such an amateur I wouldn't dare teach anyone, maybe in 10 years time if I practice every day >_

@@nessieclarks7173 Thank you so much! I absolutely love the scores for the untamed, this is very kind of you. And good luck with qin to you too!

@@Imokon I'm also trying to learn how to play, sorry this is a little late but do you remember the name of the book?

awesome video! as a western-trained musician, this was very eye-opening!
I'm sure they chose that page intentionally, because that page puts the particular symbols in extra large font, hence making it easier to film.
I would really love to learn how to play. The guqin sounds really beautiful and meditative.
Thank you so much for explaining this notation in such a well-structured, comprehensive way! I am absolutely mind-blown!
super cool and so different from the western music notation that I'm so used to! this was fun to watch~

You do a very nice breakdown of the subject. I'd love to see more content on this from you.

wow this is great it’s a lot easier to understand than i thought!
This makes more sense to me than western notations LOL
Thanks for this. I'm in no way fluent, but can learn this. Built a small 5 string Qin, This opens up a lot of music that isn't easy to find.
I just bought my first Qin and am really excited to learn how to play! This video was super helpful, thank you :)
一下就懂了。英语也说得很好。太棒了。🎉

Amazing, I've always wanted to see a score like this ever since 红楼梦里宝二爷说林妹妹在看天书
Currently learning how to play the ‘qin and this helped a lot
I love the sound of qin. But where I live, there's no teacher and I really believe that for this instrument you need someone to show you the way.
Incredibly interesting! Thank you for taking the time to make this video!
Woah this was so cool and indeed unique. I fell in love with the sound of this instrument since hearing it in cql so knowing how it works was really interesting. Thank you! Love your videos♡

Wow, that is very informative! I wondered how they know when to make that long smooth sound when they read music score. Not it explains everything
Thank you for this tutorial!
excellent video, so interesting, you explain it really well, thank you. I'm about to learn the qin, very excited, and this is so helpful.
Learning to play the qin right now, and this video is SUPER helpful. Is there any way you could share the qin scores you used in the video?
Wow very cool video as always AvenueX. I always wanted to see more of you playing guqing, especially playing an ost from a drama :D

I’m musically challenged and my brain just exploded at the 6:00 mark 😧 but great video 👍🏻👍🏻

tuning: 1-7 c d f g a c d
your second string should be d
I'll practice this before I buy the Qin!
May I have full note of this song pleaseeee
Ahhh this is so helpful thank you
Thank you
I've been watching you for years but don't know how I missed this video. I know it's random but could I have the name of your "blazer" so that I can search for it online? Thank you so much for your content.
great video! thanks for this
4:41 anddddd this is where my Chinese skills come in handy hehe :D
this is so interesting!!
wuji... my favorit song from The Untamed😍
Thank you so much
Thank you for this. very eye opening. how do you learn this?
