Technically a hand-pruning saw cuts best when pulled toward you, not pushed away like a wood/lumber saw. So, you only need to concentrate when pulling, pushing does less cutting. Also, I think it's best to remove vertical "suckers" with summer pruning in August. This prevents stimulating more vertical shoots. And you can more easily see what the shade factor is. I use a hat with a brim so the twigs hit the hat and I can react and help prevent getting them in my eyes.
