Went to the 2022 Australian MotoGP at Phillip Island. here is my take on what the day was like. To send me mail: PO Box45 West Hoxton NSW, Australia, 2171
Even though I'm a Honda guy, I still like Rossi over Marquez. But I don't get heated over comparisons. I would love to go to a Moto GP race. But wow, I can't believe they had to herd everyone together that was just trying to leave. That's poor planning at it's finest! Still looked like a good time though!! Good video man!!
Yea mate well if it’s just the racing then Márquez has smashed Rossi with 56 GP head to head wins against Rossi’s 10 … but I get it Rossi plays to the crowd , he sells a lot of $$ helmets.
I miss going. Use to be an annual pilgrimage. Good to see a lot hasn’t changed. Lol. I remember the last time I went, the shower was a mud pit, inside the showers. That helmet check in is new for me. I always camped there and they let us park the bikes next to our tent with our gear whether it was raining or sunny. I hope that’s still a thing.
I believe it is. It was just meant to be for those attending on the day. Not too many people checked in their helmets. I wont be next time. Maybe I will add a lockable top box on whatever bike I take next time.
My first visit this year - went for the ride. The old journey versus destination quote. Got royally pissed on by the weather once we got into Vic from SA. Holed up in Geelong for a couple of days - had a ball. Rain never let up until Friday morning. We'd hired a largish house pretty much next to the track - so parking/ transport wasn't an issue (had a van with a non drinker to pick up/drop off the troops) Personally sat an watched the race on the big screen with a few ales - decided trudging around in the bog and only seeing bits of the race wasn't for me. - A great coverage. Most of my companions hit the track. Apart from our race tragics, your observations correlated with my mates comments. Personally cant see myself returning. We've got a new wizzo track over here in SA just out of Adelaide.... maybe move the race over here.👍😎
Hopefully the SA govt. could put a tender in. Even if they dont get it, it may force Phillip Island to upgrade their facilities. Are you going to watch Jack race in the ASB round at the Bend?
Such a popular event and they have second rate amenities- come on PI lift ya game 😂😂😂 Glad you survived rainmegedan you certainly coped a beauty going down there Matty 😂
That was pretty shoddy regarding the helmet storage! I've never been to a MotoGP race, I really should. I used to love the WSB at Brands Hatch when they raced there, not been to a WSB race since they stopped, just BSB.
Great video, thanks for posting. I was wondering what stands you recommend (maybe Bass Stright?) - or if gen admission is all I need? Some of the Motogp tracks I visited Gen Admission is terrible like Barcelona. I’ll be driving a car, so any tips for parking a car would also be very much appreciated. Thank so much! Cheers 🏍️
Parking was ordinary last year as they had to shut the car park down due to how much water was around. Are you planning on staying at Phillip Island? The advantage of booking one of the stands, 1. you have a place to sit and 2. being slightly elevated, gives you a slighly better view of the track. One year, I booked Siberia Grandstand and thought it gave a great view of the back section of the track.
Yeh it was a bit crap, we came down from Brisbane and camped from Thursday on, it was wet as but did dry up Friday and through the weekend to gr8 race weather. Agree with your points on the race it was awesome and shame about Jack. Not a Marquez fan but credit where it's due he rode like a man possessed. I've been going for many years and wouldn't think of trying to leave the island after the race. Had a leisurely trip out on Monday morning instead.
We went to Sepang Motogp last year(23) instead of Phillip Island. Whilst the racing at Phillip Island is always a better spectacle the facilities at Sepang are really 1st class and really make Phillip Island look like the 3rd world shithole it is. A ticket at Sepang was about $160au which was for a roving grandstand, which meant you could sit in any grandstand you wanted. We travelled around by air conditioned coach to the other side of the circuit to sit in the F or T7 stand. The grandstands are huge and the trade alley was 500m long and flanked both side of the entrance. The food there was cheap, a beer was $5.80au(18ringgit) and much better than Phillip island, the toilets were impeccably clean. There was a cleaner mopping the floors around our feet when we were in there. I'm never going to Phillip Island Motogp again unless the facilities for the fans get a decent upgrade. Might be going to Motogi for this years Motogp instead.
cant wait till The Bend steals this from the island. Been going to the island for 20+ years. in general its great. FYI the portables are easier to keep clean. Given you went on a bad year the weather sucked. imagine what permanent toilets would have looked like. Much harder to clean and you have to shut them down to clean them.
Philip Island sucks for spectators- its a mud bowl with poor facilities. I used to go every year but now I go overseas its much better value. Wake up PI owners and build world class facilities. You charge an arm and a leg too 👎👎👎👎
Wow! They sure didn't think through the exit strategy at all. What a mess!
Agree 100%, The circuit is taking the spectators for granted.
It is a shame. I could imagine that there would be some tough building rules due to the location. But something definitely needs to be done.
Right on it about everything, world class event, needs an update

Thanks mate. The race and the atmosphere was great. It is a great track.

That was a nice experience. You got my like. Just keep up Matt.
Thanks mate.

@@RoadsOfOz leave your helmet on the bike ... nobody steals stuff on that weekend.
Well bummer on all that rain. Still cool that they had the event. And because you couldn't find anything you liked, look at the money you saved 😁😁😁
Despite the shortcomings, I still want to go. Never been and need to do it some time.
It is worth doing. Just go with a couple of mates and make a fun weekend of it.

Nice work mate, definitely needs to be upgraded
Thanks. Hopefully one day. But it would probably require the threat of another track taking the race away before they do the upgrade.
Sounds like they may need to change to The Bend
Great video! I'm so fortunate to have not had the experience you did, although it looks like you made the most of it! 😊
It was still a great day. I will be better prepared for the next time I go.
All good points, You'd think they'd get better over time. Good one, Matt Cheers
Us Aussie are a very apathetic bunch and it is something that organisers (and especially politicians ) prey on.
Such a popular event and they have second rate amenities- come on PI lift ya game 😂😂😂
Glad you survived rainmegedan you certainly coped a beauty going down there Matty 😂
I have found some of the footage on my camera of the rain. Might put it up as a short later in the week.
Late to the party here, but than you for the review and the feedback!
No worries. Thank you for watching. You must be looking forward to this years race (not too far away).
I was lucky enough to have the Monday off work but 2 of my mates had to fly back to Brisbane at 7pm that night. They ended up calling in sick haha
Imagine going back to work on a Monday after such a big weekend. That would be a no from me. I rode back to Sydney on the Tuesday.
That was pretty shoddy regarding the helmet storage! I've never been to a MotoGP race, I really should. I used to love the WSB at Brands Hatch when they raced there, not been to a WSB race since they stopped, just BSB.
A European MotoGP would be an amazing event to attend. I just hope they are better organised than what we have her in Australia.
@@RoadsOfOz I doubt they are, they all seem about the money rather than the fans

@@RoadsOfOz I’m staying in Inverloch and I’ll probably get a grandstand ticket. Thanks for the suggestions 🙂
drag a chair in with you and get to turn 10 early ... my favorite spot get to see a lot of the track from there.
Hi, which grandstands has rooftop ? If you don’t mind i’m asking, thank you.
None. They are all temporary stands.
well, it sounds like the Good outweighed the Bad ! Looks like a great day overall!
It was a great day. I would go again.

You took the smart option leaving on the Monday.
Did you get caught riding down in the rain on the Thursday?
Awesome Matt a shame such a great race is spoiled by the visitor amenities
They definitely need to do better mate. The track and the fans were amazing.
great journalism 😎😎
Thanks mate. Much appreciated.
Does the cheapest ticket (island pass) get you trackside or what is that ticket? There's no information on their website. Thanks 👍
General admission can get you around the track. Just no seat or access to stands.
ohhh wow

I am tempted to go to Sepang. Maybe in 2025.
Great video Matt. It's a shame, they should really invest in some improvements since its on the world stage
They need to mate. We look like a backwater compared to the rest of the racing world.
Glad you hate a great time, but it's a shame the amenities aren't great and it seems to be managed poorly
Sadly, I do not see it changing anytime soon. It is still a great race to watch though.
Sorry I missed the Prem Matt
All good mate.
👍🤘
Phillip island needs to spend some $$$. It’s a shame for Jack
You should have heard the collective sigh when it was announced that it was Miller who was take out (ironically at the bend named after him).
@@RoadsOfOz 🫤
Agree mate, could have been a bit more organized. 😎
It seems like they never had a contingency plan and made it up without assessing what would happen.

ldnt be a ride to Phillip Island without getting wet
What shame and I hope they get it sorted. Maybe covid squashed their budget over the last couple years.
Wish that was the case Eric. But it has always been like this. The race hase been back there since 1997.
