    This charming video was mostly about two people who are clearly madly in love with each other despite their very different personalities and approaches to life!
    It was also good about using icons air-conditioning for heating and cooling. Their lack of preparation for the video, disagreements about facts and figures and doing it on the hoof made the video longer but it was entertaining - it’s not often I laugh out loud several times during a heat pump video!
    Thank you!

    Great video. We got a small a2a system for the 2 main rooms abut 6 years ago mainly to absorb excess solarPV. Everything has it's pro's and cons. Much cheaper than a wet system especially if you have to upgrade pipes and radiators, but no gov subsidy. A must have is to get a decent solarPV + battery system which is a game changer. Lots of negativity in popular press about the cost. Buying a house or a private pension is a cost but most people would describe these as investments. We have been getting 10-15% pa return which back in 2016 was 100x better than a saving account. Our system provides 100% of electricity, heating and hot water 8 months of the year.
    The cooling capability of a2a is becoming more and more useful even in the UK. Something we appreciate almost every summer now.
    I agree with other comments, Mrs EV is the star is the show.

      You don't even need to spend £100s on a manual / electric awning. I bought a 4 pointed sail style awning that's about 5x4m with steel hooks in each corner, about £40 from a company on ebay. 2 corners hook onto hooks on the house. 2 are on nylon ropes to trees in the garden. Creates a lot of shade that shades my 3.6m 4 door bifolds. Stops the laminate getting hot. Stops the patio reflecting into the house, cuts down on the cooling needs of our AC unit. Yours is even bigger, but same principle. It can survive rain and wind, but we take it down if the weather's going to be bad, and in winter. Just unhook the 4 corners, fold it up and put it in the shed. 2 minutes. I see so many old awnings that look worse for wear after a few winters. All discoloured.

Hand;t considered one for the home, but it’s an interesting option. I want to get rid of my boiler at some point and am considering AHSP, so this is interesting to consider (but boiler is only 2-3 years old, so a bit too new to be scrapping it at the moment). And Happy Anniversary too!

  • @ScrapKing73
    @ScrapKing73 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Heat pumps are more efficient When the temperature differential between inside and outside is smaller. So in the summer you can turn the temperature down at night, and turn it up a bit during the day. If your house is well insulated this can significantly reduce the electricity the heat pump uses during the daytime. Just throw an extra blanket on the bed at night!
    This strategy can also be used during the winter, except it may not save money in areas where you have time of use pricing. Where I live there’s no time of use pricing, every kW costs the same as every other kW, so this is a great year-round strategy for us.
    But it would be a good summer strategy anywhere. :-)

    From Australia, welcome to summer heat.
    Happy anniversary. 12 years sounds like a long time for now. When you get to 30 or 50 years you will realise how short it was.
    Your glass wall looks like it is facing west, which is the hardest orientation to control. Movable shading would probably work the best, such as a pergola with extendable shade cloth or awnings that can be pulled out in summer and retracted to let in winter sun. 3 metre width could make a pleasant sheltered outdoor dining area.
    Adding floor to ceiling curtains would be more cost effective insulation than triple glazing and can be opened or closed as required to control heat flow in or out.
    It may help to put an awning over your heat pump or maybe a ventilated enclosure (another diy project). This would reduce the heat load it is working against in summer. It may also reduce icing up from frost in winter.

  • @effervescence5664
    @effervescence5664 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    This is a really amusing video.
    If you have an Air to Water split system the Heat Pumps use the same gas as Air Con Heat Pumps as the conversion to radiator water is done inside the property.
    The reason A2A isn't on the grant is because they don't want the increased load on the national grid during the summer.
    Mini Split Multi Zone systems are great because it's one outside unit, but if you get a leak you lose heat/cooling to the entire installation where as 1 to 1 units obviously have redundancy and the ability to have separate climates in each room.
    There's other things like you're able to get a higher scop from air to air than air to water and because of being air to air they tend to work to a lower outside air temperature. 15c instead of 5c.

    Nearly a year since I watched this video and I think it may be the most influential youtube video I have seen. I did lots of research but perhaps it was a lightbulb moment when I realised Flaviana was absolutely right about so many things! We now have a multisplit air to air system which we use for 100% of our heating and cooling needs. In a month or so we will be getting a 5.6kw solar array. In combination our home will be emitting less CO2 by several tonnes per year and it is more comfortable. We will also save money on running costs, though of course the upfront investments were rather significant.

      We're in Cambridgeshire. It's not crazy hot so far this year but the humidity is oppressive. The heat would tend to linger into the night upstairs which makes sleeping tricky for the kids. With the AC running just very moderately we can keep the house feeling comfortable for surprisingly little power use. Absolutely love it and no regrets at all.

    Firstly - happy anniversary. I don’t think I’ve ever watched a TH-cam video about air conditioning, but I get the novelty of it. When I lived in the UK I was just as amazed with double glazing and gas heating which I was enthralled with. In Australia aircon is ubiquitous - especially reverse cycle ones like yours. Multi-head units are far less common for a few reasons #1: they are a single point of failure (if the condenser dies there’s no aircon in any room - they get punished in our baking sun or the circuit board can be shorted out by a gecko) #2: as you pointed out you have to have each room running at the same temperature and #3: they are expensive to run as they are servicing a larger area. Individual units for each room are more common for this reason. It’s also common to close off a lot of the rooms in a house and just run the main unit in the living, dining and kitchen area of a home to help reduce the running costs. Ducted aircon is also common, but far more expensive to purchase and hard to retrofit if you’re not building. Solar panels are also extremely popular to help offset the running costs as electricity is horrendously expensive. It’s common to have a PV system in size ranging from 5-10KW although I know of homes with 30KW solar systems. Batteries less so as they are very expensive. There are a lot of ways we need to insulate against the heat - it’s not only oppressive but can build up the thermal load in the home which then requires running aircon for longer. Your pump was really interesting - I’ve never seen an aircon with one so very unusual. I did a quick comparison of the pricing here in AU$ vs UK£ and the same model and setup came in at £4,300 less installation so not bad. Enjoy the cool 😎

    Good and entertaining explanation of air conditioning. An air conditioner gives 3x more heat or cold than the electricity used (COP = 3). Water condenses out because cool air can hold less moisture than hot air, unless the air is dry. The earth, 2m or more down, has a constant average temperature, so cellar or a lot of mass (thick walls) keeps a house at a more constant temperature. A flat roof must have thick insulation.

    I'm in the process of getting a heat pump myself. Step 1 is replace the rather small solar panel installation that came with the house (built 2017), then replace the boiler with an all electric heat pump and then get AC/heating done. My house has 2 stories and I'm not fond of piping running on the outside, it just doesn't look good.
    So.. for the AC/heating part I may consider a monoblock installation instead.

    Good choice. Living in the arid western US (Colorado) we used an evaporative cooler. That became increasingly unworkable with heavy smoke from wildfires. We installed an air source heat pump that provides very efficient heating and cooling. Our indoor units are flush mounted in the ceiling. We’ve been able to eliminate using natural gas for heating. Congratulations on eliminating your gas use entirely.

      @@MrEV No but I’ll check it out. Also don’t worry about the heat expelled outside from the heat pump. That’s just ambient heat. Heat pumps don’t generate heat like burning gas does. They just move it from the inside to the outside and vice verse in the winter. I’m still trying to wrap my head around that concept.

    I saw a recent quote for electricity and gas from Scottish Power for a 1 year fix, £150 per source exit fee. Electricity was at 52p/kWh, gas was at 17p/kWh. So electricity now only 3x as expensive as gas. To think a year ago I was on 13p electicity with Octopus, 3.5p gas with Bulb! The standing charges were about 47p electric, 25p gas. About the same as everywhere. The estimated bill for the year was over £5400 for a house in my road, mostly 4 bed detached houses. Getting solar to power whatever you use is a great idea now - for those that can afford it, and own their own place, and have a suitable roof!

    Heat pumps are the future, but I’m fascinated by the ways in which people around the world used to heat their homes in the past.
    Out here on Canada’s west coast, when I was growing up most people used a mix of wood heating and oil furnaces.
    Over time that was replaced by electric baseboard heating in most new homes (which was a revelation, as oil furnaces typically had one temperature setting for the whole house, yet electric baseboard heating allowed every room to be set independently).
    And now it’s becoming very common for heat pumps in new home construction, and many old homes with oil furnaces are switching to centralized heat pumps that use the fact that oil furnaces required ducting through the house. So there are no heat pump units in any of the rooms, but you can still set the temperature in the zones independently through the house.
    I have never every seen a natural gas boiler in a house, let alone lived in a home with one.

      20 million homes in UK have (natural) gas. It is the default energy supply for heating and cooking. The rest use oil, LPG, solid fuel, or electrical heating - usually a mix. If a modern gas combi boiler is fitted, this gives hot water, and a 'wet' system of pipes to. radiators or ufh. Usually no separate hot water tank. Big consideration for many if switching systems is finding space for this, especially in new housing stock, flats etc. The UK government plan is that gas will be phased out in 30's. So a mixture of solutions now on offer, but none are as cheap or simple as gas, so change is slow.
      The other concern for me is resilience. If the electric power is lost (last winter off for 3 days) most heating, including gas and possibly oil CH can't be used, So I now have woodburner stove for heat (and a camping gas cooker) to supplement my electric-only house. Installing a full wet system for ASHP is a no-no for me.
      A2A does have appeal though. Great video.

      @@asilver2889 It'll be harder for people living in a "flat", but for single-family dwellings the long-term will be people running their homes off of their car during a power cut, I expect. This will be especially convenient for a typical two-car family, somewhat less convenient for a one-car family if the car can't go anywhere until the power is restored, LOL. But it's not as bad as it sounds, because cars spend most of their time sitting around anyway. :)

    You should look into placing external sunscreens. They are better than sunblocking foil because you can put the screens up in the morning/evening and in the colder seasons as to not lose sunlight in your interior and free energy heating your home. The downside is that the screen takes away some of your beautiful view when closed as it needs to be a pretty dense mesh to block the sun optimally. And you have to open a screen if you want to keep a passage open to your yard.
    The inferior options would be:
    - sunblocking foil on the outside of your windows, but this will take energy and light out of your home for the 9 colder months as well as in the morning and evening making your house darker and colder.
    - sun canopy: this can take a lot of direct sunlight out of the house when the sun is at it's hottest and highest. Also allows for some nice shade to sit outside in the summer. Biggest downside is that they are fragile for wind and rain so not ideal to leave it it open all day when you're away.

    • @MrEV
      @MrEV  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Some great suggestions there. We do have a canopy on one side actually (I forgot to film it) and that certainly helps a lot.
      As time goes on we'll have to borrow more and more solutions like sunscreens from countries like Italy with more experience in dealing with this sort of weather. I'd also like fly screens so we can leave the windows open at night (without air conditioning on of course) without fear of mosquitos eating us while we sleep!

    Thanks. Thinking of putting aircon in our flat here in France. Our charcuterie is the same. You have to buy low salt and nitrate free. Our electricity is mostly nuclear so that’s good but I’m aware that we’ll just be taking the heat from inside and putting it outside. But shutters are good too on those big windows. Happy anniversary! Here they say not to go more than 8° lower than the outside temperature.

    Ideally if the sun is beating on your bifold doors put up some sort screen during the hotter months.
    Does you caravan have an awning?
    Look at the wall attachment available for caravans.
    You could even build DIY panels but either way you need to make sure that storms won't rip the screen off.
    The DIY screen you showed at the end would block at least 50% of the radiant heat hitting the doors.
    If you want to experiment cover your doors in paper for one day in the middle of a row of hot days.

  • @MikeYoungeasytravel

    Triple glazed (as well as double glazed) windows, in the UK, are designed and installed to keep heat IN your house. Thus, triple glazed will do a better job of keeping heat in your house! You should focus on preventing direct sun light from hitting your windows during the Summer.
