I am always excited to see a new MadCap Hats video! Your tutorials are excellent. Not too fast and not too slow. I’ve made several of your hats as gifts and have sold some at craft shows. Thank you !

I made it! I got a little lost, at first, with attaching the lining, but I think I was just too tired for it, so I put it down. It made much more sense the next day. A couple of times, the layers of fleece, at the seams, were a little challenging for my old machine, but we powered through. It's not perfect, but I think it's very good, all things considered. I'm so happy with it, and I'll be making another soon. Really soon, actually, for a gift. I sure hope she likes it, because I'm really going to enjoy making it. There will definitely be more Mad Cap Hat patterns made in my future. 🙂
I'm always so happy when you post a new hat tutorial. Your hats are all much fun. Now my hair has grown back in after chemo I can wear any style of your hats again. Thank for all your lovely designs
Thank you Karen! So glad you are finished chemo!! Yay!!! The hat version of this pattern, which I am just finishing the video for now, has a brim all the way around that is flat and down at the back giving a bit more coverage for new hair growing in. I am just passing 26 years of being cancer free and am so grateful for that. Sending hugs and sincere hope that you are starting a new period of life that features new gorgeous hair and good health!! Tori.
What an awesome hat! I wear glasses also, and this hat will be perfect in the Seattle rain. Fingers crossed for a chance to win the Circuit Hat Press, looks wonderful. Can’t wait to make this hat. And thank you for hosting such a cool contest. Joan P. ~ aka It’s OK
Perfect to keep the rain off your glasses, your nose, your ears ...you will love this visor!! Fingers crossed for the contest Joan! Thanks so much for watching from beautiful Seattle! Greetings back from me in chilly Canada not far from USA/Canada border near Watertown, NY! Tori
The hats you make, and graciously share how to with us, are darling. As a sewing, what I value most is your techniques, which streamline the process from start to finish! The Circuit tool would be a wonderful tool to have!
CONGRATULATIONS RINA!! Over 200 entries and your name was the lucky one out of the hat first! Please send me an email at madcaphats@gmail.com so we can get your shipping address. Shipping and a brand new Cricut Hat Press kit is on us and we are so grateful for your comment and support of the Channel. Tori and the Mad Cap Family!
Thanks for watching Christine ... I will do more videos about the Cricut, how to make appliques with heat n bond on the back of fleece and fabric, how to use the hat press like an iron to shape felt and wool on blocks or the pressing form. It is such a great new tool for anyone who is interested in a hat business for sure.
You will love this one!! And good luck with the contest too!! If enough people enter I am going to try to have more than one of the Cricut hat presses to give away.
I just bought the pattern and will be printing out my size today. Thanks for your generous offer of a free size but I know these are going to be popular with my friends and family. I see more of your patterns in my future. Summer will come again.
I LOVE your hats and have made all of your patterns🧵🪡❤️Can’t wait to get started on this cute Rosie hat!! Looking forward to your next design with the full brim! Happy Happy Hat Making HoHoHo🎄🧑🎄
It is personally one of my favorites because I can really mix and match different prints and fabrics with my large stock of fleece!!! Customers really love this cap too. Always. Great coverage for glasses and for keeping the bright winter sun out of your eyes!
Practise is how you become skilled at anything in life. You have the right attitude especially if you enjoy sewing! I am certain you will be successful sewing this and other projects! Thanks so much for your comment! Good Luck! Tori
I just made the Winter Bucket Hat….Love it. Now I can’t wait to make the Rosie Hat. Thank you for your excellent videos & patterns. You are very easy to follow along, you describe every step very well. I’m new to Hat making & I’m loving it. Thank You for making the patterns free! 🇨🇦

Thank you very much for providing your patterns. I love making my own hats and have made several. I think hats add a lot of charm and personality to any outfit and I'm really inspired to make this one. I was also inspired to Like & Subscribe. Have a Great Day & Happy Sewing!😊
Oh I hope to make this soon. I have just made a couple of your headbands. I gave one to my hairdresser and she was so impressed, she said headbands usually slide off her head. She tried the band on and said "oh so comfy" and she wore it home. Was great for the weather in Calgary!! Thanks!!
Thank you for sharing all your expertise - This Rosie Cap seems to be just what I want ! I have made up many of your styles Summer hats & Fleecy ones ! My friends have had presents & I have got a lot of hats !!! You are very generous to give us the super patterns to start us off & I have purchased a few full patterns for the different sizing. Your no fuss approach presenting the videos are also brilliant to follow with fabulous tips. I am also new to hat making and I am hooked - definitely a Mad Capper !!
What a lovely comment to start my day Gina!!! Thanks so much for this lovely feedback. I am so glad you find my videos helpful and so glad you are turning your friends in hat lovers!!! Hello and welcome fellow Mad Capper!!! Tori
Thank you for a fantastic how to... planning to download your free medium n give it a whirl !!! Hoping I will be successful enough to buy all the sizes for giving hats to family n friends 😊
The first one is a lesson. Number two will be the charm! Have fun, take your time and you will love this pattern!!! The full pattern will be ready next week and includes the matching full hat brim (as well as the cap visor) which is the next video coming up in a few days. Just finishing it now!
It would help on the pattern to specify how many pieces to cut ie Cut 1 or cut 2 I mistakenly cut 2 pieces of each piece and was confused initially until I watched the video several times and realized I only needed one piece of fabric for each piece of the hat ! I’ll finish the cap tomorrow ! I’m very excited!! Thank you for the cute pattern
Thank you Jill ... I will pass that on to the digitizer. I expect the folks sewing the patterns to watch the video ... kind of like me being in the room with you showing you what to do in close up rather than relying on just writting things down. You can also watch our videos with the subtitles on if you prefer reading instructions. I am trying to do the best for sewers of all skill levels and those who might not speak English. My audience is worldwide and our pattern sales are from every corner of the world!! Thanks so much for watching, much appreciated! Your second cap will be a breeze to make by comparison. Took me 37 years of sewing hats over and over again to get to the point where drafting patterns for others to make is easy. By comparison, think of the time and money you are saving by just watching the how to video a few times!! When I am making these patterns and working with a computer digitizer to deliver them to you, free of charge in most cases, I just have to assume that sewers have watched the video before the cutting any fabric or downloading the pattern. Tori
Oh yes, I had watched it several times before purchasing and cutting , I just put my folded fabric down ,cut and confused myself!!! Duh ;) Great idea to have closed captioning on as well! Your videos are fantastic ! That Cricut press head form looks amazing too . THANK YOU very much for your rapid response!
Love your hat making videos. I needed & wanted to make a new hat for the MN winters and was planing on making your Winter Fashion Cap, but your new video of the Rosie Cap showed up on my YT feed. I love the Rosie Cap! Question: For the top stitching, what length do you use? Thank you.
I use a stitch lenght that is slightly longer than the average. Inbetween 3.5 or 4. Sometime if the fabric is thick I will adjust so the feed dog can handle it better. Experiment with some scraps on your machine first to see what looks nice with your equipment. The Rosie Cap will morph into the Rosie Hat which has a bucket brim with the back of the brim downward sloping to extend the depth at the back. Just finishign that video now! Love Minnesota ... used to live north of Duluth in my younger days outside of Thunder Bay, ON. For fun we would go to "The Flame" in International Falls. Oh youth!!
I have the pattern, and I've just cut it all out. So excited to think I might have a new hat by the end of the weekend (if time allows). Very easy to put the pages together and cut out the pattern. I did get curious, however, while I was cutting it out. Is there a reason why the liner and upper and lower bands are full pieces and not cut on the fold. Can they be halved and cut on the fold? Not doing that with the top and visor makes total sense to me, but I'm still fairly new to sewing, so wondering if there's a nuance to this that I might be missing. Thanks so much! I'll be back to give this video some more views soon! 🙂
Yes you can cut them on the fold if you wish!! Whatever is easier for you. When I can, I like you to have the full piece for accuracy. Thanks so much, Tori
@@madcaphats That makes sense. And I got to thinking that it's good to have the whole piece if you're trying to get a particular part of the fabric design included, too.
What size needle do you use for your fleece sewing hats? And also, what stitch length do you use? Thank you so much for the answers. And for these beautiful hats.
I have to check the actual needles but they are standard Juki needles for industrial machines. Stitch length I really don't adjust much it is usually under 4 but over 3.
It is adorable but I live in Florida so I want to adapt it to light weight fabric. I’m sure there’s not very many people thinking this way, but we do wear hats in Florida not to protect us from the cold but from the sun. I am bored with ball caps. My concern is cool and comfortable. If you have any suggestions that would be great
This is the one I wear just about all year! Except in Jan and Feb in Canada. But I wear it when I am cooking in our bnb as well as just about everywhere. Boho Cap ... th-cam.com/video/A3osnEw6-f8/w-d-xo.html
I'm a fairly new sewist, so I'm not sure if my skill level is up to making this, but I sure am tempted. I do have a question. I understand that the band needs to be made of something that stretches, but does the visor piece also need to be made of something that stretches? And if so, what direction does the pattern piece get placed on it? I'm used to looking for grain line markings, but the pattern doesn't have those. Thanks so much! I like that you sew the stabilizer on before cutting the pieces out, to keep everything sturdy and in place.
The visor does not need to be made of stretchy fabric so have fun picking fibres/fabrics that compliment each other. You can turn the pattern piece around if a few directions to pick the placement of any pattern that your fabric has for the visor. You can make a statement with this pattern. It is a good pattern to learn about hat making. Just take your time. You have asked great questions so I am certain you will nail this!! If not on your first cutting, definitely the second!! Keep me posted!! Tori
I'm having so much trouble sewing the brims on my hats. My machine won't do all the layers. Does it come out good if I use a lighter stabilizer? Or do you have any other ideas? I only seem to be having luck with the toque and the headband. I'm not a hat wearer but I love your hats and wear the toque all the time when I walk my dog. Thank you for the patterns and videos.
Sorry to hear about your troubles and I suspect that since all machines are not created equally that it could be that four layers of fleece and interfacing may be to thick for your feed dogs. You can try using micro fleece for the underside of the brim and micro fleece for the lining. Let me know if that works. If you don't have micro fleece try a quilting cotton for your lining cut on the bias so it will stretch a bit.
@@madcaphats Awesome. Both good ideas to try. I just had no idea what to use instead. By the way, I became a great toque maker and have made so many for myself and my family. Thank you.
Hi! I’m trying to draft a basic hat pattern for my 62.5cm head and was wondering: the cap top that has the dart in it, is the finished circumference the same as your head’s circumference? If not, how much of a difference and why? My thanks!!! ❤
For this cap, always a bit larger, should match the length of the top of the band which will also be longer than your head circumference. Comfort is key to loving hats. At the top of the hat, the head circumference is smaller than the part of your head above your eyes and eyebrows where the bottom of a hat usually rests. This hat is sort of square so the band is the same measurement at the top and bottom. Other caps and hats may taper at bit to be perhaps smaller than your head circumference at the top of the band versus the bottom. I hope that helps!! Thanks for watching! Tori
