I had the pleasure of being included in dinners with Tony Butala….my close friends were friends of these guys and included me in private times before, and after the shows! I still remember sitting on the couch with Tony discussing different singers! A wonderful experience…and one I cherish! Would get to unwind with them after the shows was time I will always remember. So glad my friends included me!
In my opinion, the Lettermen's version is the best ever recorded of this great song. Listening to the separate vocal parts is a very special treat. Thanks for posting this clip.
The Lettermen are a true class act. I grew up in the early sixties listening to their music and buying their 45's. Their harmony was second to none. Thank you for posting this!!
The Lettermen were classic musical harmonies, classic unforgettable melodies, classic mesmerizing love songs - seldom matched - evenly brothers, the Beatles, the association - you won’t anything near this today.
The one on the right is bob Engemann. He was my uncle. He passed away last January. He was just as good a man as he is a singer. He loved every person he met. Love you bobby!
MissMusicPro No It's not It's Bob Engemann Gary Pike is'nt in the cooking segment It's Tony Butala and Bob Engemann When the show first came on it was left to right Gary Pike, Tony Butala, Bob Engemann Bob Engemann was born in the same hometown as my Mother Hazel Park, Michigan same with Bill Hailey of the Comets fame.
Gary VanDecar The Lettermen in this video from left to right are: Donny Pike, who Jim Pike had take his place because of voice problems as Donny explains in this video.. Tony Butala is in the center and on the right is Gary Pike who replaced Bob Engemann about 12 years before this TV show. Trust me, Bobby was home taking care of his family when this show was shot. I should know, I was there..
Thank You Gary Pike for letting me know and of course you would know because you were there Bob Engemann left the group I believe 1967 I saw and he never did perform again with the group. For some reason I kept thinking that Bob was still part of the group but he was'nt he was like you said at home taking care of his family.
Gary Im a big fan of "I Believe" . In 1975 I followed a youth choir over the southern U.S. and that was their signiture song. When they asked for a critique of their version. I always pointed to your version and told them to aspire to that. Great memories! Superb harmonies.
Piece of cake, although it does take some focus and concentration. Of course I grew up listening to The Lettermen, and singing. Love their Christmas album!
After watching this incredible video again, I noticed something else... that their vocals sound very much like a barber shop quartet, just "modernized" for the times. Listen very carefully, and see if you can hear it. It just shows how all musical styles are based upon the beautiful music of the past. I love these guys!!
tiffsaver glad I read your comment before I posted, because I was going to say the same thing. They have all the harmonics of a barbershop quartet with one member less. Every time I hear “When I Fall in Love” I can’t believe it’s just a trio.
@@blacktar467899 I believe that hearing a group sing a cappella is the single greatest test of their ability. That's why I LOVE groups like The Lettermen, The Four Freshmen, even the Beach Boys, who copied their entire singing style after these men. But if you want to see something truly special watch The Manhattan Transfer sing "A Nightingale Sang in Berkeley Square" a cappella, on You Tube. Absolutely mindblowing.
This was a real treat to watch. Thanks for posting. I was a fan from the 60's and am also experienced somewhat with music so I really appreciated the deconstruction of the song into it's three parts. Listening to them separately was fascinating. I would never have believed that those three parts would combine into the magic that it becomes when sung together.
This was AMAZING. No one ever sang this song better. I have always wondered how they achieved their signature sound, and now I know. The Beach Boys owe their entire careers to The Four Freshmen and this great trio. Thanks for posting:)
On this day in 1961 {December 25th} the Lettermen performed "When I Fall in Love" on the late Dick Clark's 'American Bandstand'... One month earlier on November 20th it entered Billboard's Hot Top 100 chart; eventually it peaked at #7 and spent 14 weeks on the Top 100... In 1952 Doris Day released her version and it peaked at #20 on Billboard's Best Selling chart... In 1961 Etta James covered it; her version reached #65 on the Top 100 R.I.P. Ms. James {1938 - 2012} and Mr. Clark {1929 - 2012}
I think it was Chicago or Milwaukee, but I don't know the name of the host and I believe he went on to do network news and hosting. Donny Pike was hired by his older brother Jim to take his place in the group until his voice recovered. Donny started in 1974 and left in 1982. I believe this show aired in the late 70's or very early 80's.
I do believe the host is Jon Heinz, long time on air personality in the Mpls/St. Paul radio market. I did not know he did TV. He has done many morning shows in the twin cities including Heinz and Bush KSTP AM, in the early 70's, Heinz and Berglund WLOL 99.5 FM, 80's and he did a country station morning show too. He still fills in on WCCO AM from time to time...Wow....the Carlton Supper Club showroom....that used to be quite the place...was never there, but they had lots of acts sing there..
Great sound, especially how the "parts" come together. Only Tony is left. We saw the Letthermen in Austin a few months ago. Tony B. plus a replacement from 1983 and another from 1989. Nice sound but definitely not these three.
Jim Pike’s high falsetto was the signature sound of the Lettermen in the 60s and 70s. It had a unique sound and exceptional quality to it. In fairness to the new members, they’re still good. But Jim’s voice was just one of a kind.
I don't know who he is/was but he has a killer deep golden voice. Would love to have a speaking voice like that! The female host is super cute/adorable in a late 70's/early 80's kind of way!
I had the pleasure of attending their shows. Simply Beautiful.
The demonstration of their harmony was incredibly wonderful. Such talent.

I will always love the Lettermen that began in the 60s. Their songs helped to mould my childhood. Thank you.😍😍😍
I’ll never stop
Loving you , Lettermen ! From 13 to 72!! You are best to none ! I have watched your live performances 3 times ! Couldn’t get enough!
In my opinion, the Lettermen's version is the best ever recorded of this great song. Listening to the separate vocal parts is a very special treat. Thanks for posting this clip.
Love The Lettermen. Great example of their wonderful harmonies. Thanks for posting!!
"The Way You Look Tonight" from 1961 was a favourite of mine. I was only 16 then. I'm 74 now and still love their super Harmonising. 😄
The Lettermen are a true class act. I grew up in the early sixties listening to their music and buying their 45's. Their harmony was second to none. Thank you for posting this!!
Their voices were like the voices of angels!!
The Lettermen were classic musical harmonies, classic unforgettable melodies, classic mesmerizing love songs - seldom matched - evenly brothers, the Beatles, the association - you won’t anything near this today.
The very first 45 record I ever purchased. The harmonies blew me away at 13
Love this group. Just amazing guys. God Bless them!
Such a wonderful and talented group. My girl friend who became my wife, and I danced and danced and fell in love to these guys.
The one on the right is bob Engemann. He was my uncle. He passed away last January. He was just as good a man as he is a singer. He loved every person he met. Love you bobby!
Sorry to disappoint you but the one on the right is Gary Pike. Real sorry about Bobby's passing. He was truly a wonderful man..

I was just 12! but the song made a big impact on me...thinking that there should be one and only love for ever...
My absolute favorite version of this song.
They have the best version ever of this song!! Love it, love it!!
That is terrific ! Especially the demonstration of each voice individually !
This is awesome. Most folks have never heard a song taken into parts and don't know how hard it can be to sing your part and not the melody ;)
Try barbershop sometime..4 parts....
Piece of cake, although it does take some focus and concentration. Of course I grew up listening to The Lettermen, and singing. Love their Christmas album!
Mabuhay Lettermen!Your song inspires me and remember my younger days
I have always loved this group.

Who's listening and enjoying in 2024? Sounds just as wonderful as in 1962.
Haha right,, perfect blending
WOW WOW WOW !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1
From a mad keen 76yo Aussie fan.
One of the very best vocal groups of all time.
73 year old Aussie here.
Yep, definitely one of the best harmony groups ever.
I love their singing! 💚❤️♥️
My love and I will see them this Thursday in Largo, FL.

How interesting to watch this and the guys explainin how they do their harmonies. Thanks for uploading this & for lettermen1 (Phil) for sharing.
Loved these guys...my wife got "pinned" to me in 1969 at Illinois State University...and her girlfriends played this song in her "pinning" ceremony.
Really ,when i fall in love ,is my old time song favorite..
I got to meet Tony in person about 4/5 years ago... amazing man and an amazing singer
I met Tony after concert in Erie, Pa around 1980 at the Warner theater. He signed album for me I still have to this day...
Beautiful.. love this song.
They should have been on the Dave Letterman show.
These guys are da bomb!
I like the song very much.
Nice n beautiful trios

The voice of host like my mentor Angelo castro Jr,, ' in the world tonight
Obviously this was sometime after 1976.
Donny!!!
They mentioned the Twin cities, which means Minneapolis/St. Paul. Now I'll have to do research to figure out who the host was!
How about the host. Who is he? Charming.
Where is Jim Pike? Did he take the place of Bob?
Great sound, especially how the "parts" come together. Only Tony is left. We saw the Letthermen in Austin a few months ago. Tony B. plus a replacement from 1983 and another from 1989. Nice sound but definitely not these three.
Jim and Gary Pike of the Lettermen have their own group with Ric de Azevedo called the Reunion and their site is at reunionthesingingroup.com

A great group. But, that was an era when haircuts were horrible. There was thankfully an upturn in hairstyling, beginning in the early 80's
Damn that’s crazy
Who is the TV show host and what station this on?
Who is the show host??
Harmony really sounds odd, when you deconstruct each singer's individual part-lol
what year???? Why do people post stuff without posting the year with it????
1979
+Gary Pike I know exactly what you mean. Posted a date folks!
I recognize the voice of the show host
she is flirty
The tv show host was like WTF?! at 2:54
So was I
In the 70’s
before straight no chaser it was them. incredible, hmm?
