    I just started learning to knit last night, after teaching myself to crochet last year, and this video is so helpful for learning the difference in stitch structure. Thank you!

    Thanks! Knowing that row on the needle counts as already been done is life changing!

    I love your example of counting the garter stitch. It’s best when it’s kept simple.

      You are so welcome Thea, and thank you for your kind comment. I love it when people ask for help on simple little things and I can provide it. Little hinges swing big doors. Sometimes the simplest thing can save us so much frustration.

    thank you! also, this video made me realize that when the little tail from casting is on the same side as the rest of your garn means that there is an even number of rows!! life saver for "ohh.. did i count the last row?"

    Oh wow! Game changer! I do love this way of counting.....I was trying to keep count by writing down my rows lol 😂 I was totally confused.... I’m a newbie knitter

    • @CherylBrunetteTV
      @CherylBrunetteTV  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm glad you find it helpful. To me it's just common sense, though some people insist on counting the cast on or saying the row on the needles doesn't count. This counting is often a problem even for people who have been at it for years.

    Thank you because I’ve struggled with knowing should I count the cast on row. Also, I’m working on the petiteknit “Sophie” shawl and it’s all garter with some increases/decreases. I am supposed to complete 5 rows then do an increase row maybe I wasn’t counting the stitches on the needle. How can I tell which row was my increase row?

    • @CherylBrunetteTV
      @CherylBrunetteTV  ปีที่แล้ว

      You might be able to see the increases on the row you put them in happened. Look down into the knitting in the area in which the increases were executed and when you find one, put a safety pin in it so that you can count up from there. If you're off by a row or two it's unlikely anyone will see that.

    Hi Cheryl! This was interesting to me. When you had your swatch up, I was counting each garter ridge as two rows. So, not counting the cast on row and the row on the needles, I came up with 13. Because you are the professional with so many years of experience and I am only one year into knitting, I want to know if my method also works. Can you tell me if that is also a valid way of counting rows?

    • @CherylBrunetteTV
      @CherylBrunetteTV  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don't understand quite what you're explaining. If you are counting the ridges at 2 each, and discarding the CO and row on the needles, you can't get an odd number. What am I not seeing in this method? Also . . . if you understand it and it works for you, then it's valid.

    • @amybristol5607
      @amybristol5607 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think it must be because I see an incomplete garter ridge right up next to the needle. Although it is technically a ridge, I don't count the upper portion of the ridge when it is right next to the needle. Perhaps it doesn't make perfect sense, but it does work for me. Thank you for your answer! :)

      That this works for you consistently is all that matters! There are many "right" ways to do things.

    By counting under the stitches, mine says 7 however by counting the purl ridges, it says 6

      Try flipping over your knitting and checking. This method is pretty straightforward. Also don't count your cast on.
