Good tips! Traveling solo has become unavoidable for me because most of my friends are just too busy to travel. I'm single with no kids and a location independent job so traveling solo has become the new normal.

THIS is why I love surrounding myself with well-travelled people. They are much more open minded and so much more interesting than closed off people without any experiences or topics to discuss.. Well done! Your intelligence, integrity, well spoken-ness and friendly demeanor shine, wish everyone was like that!
You have a friend in Sydney Australia should you ever need it :)

Some people want to be well-travelled, they just don't have the money or time. Or in my case, they have body image issues.

doing this takes so much bravery. My family is so paranoid and has instilled that paranoia into me. Traveling with a big group is fun but you're right that it can be annoying. I hate when I go somewhere and there's always someone who complains the entire time or people that like to gravitate towards things that can easily be found in America. Like why are we going to McDonalds? Let's explore and try new things! Maybe one day I can travel solo. Right now I'm hoping to get into the Peace Corps, so maybe that can be my start to solo travel.

    •  7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

I went with my sister to japan, she walked so slow and was just complaining, so i just left her in kyoto. She found her way back to osaka just fine. Then i went to cuba with friends, fucking idiots complaining all the time "why we have to walk so much" yeah, im not paying those damn taxi scammers a dime and we were just walking in central habana pretty much standard walk. Then i went with my brother to japan again, and again, he and his gf complaining why we have to walk so much. Damn, people think traveling to another country means staying in a resort or something, although the problem maybe is me, i really walk a lot, even at home i at least do 10km daily, 6km of that running, if i have to walk i can handle easily 25km a day.

You don't want to start solo travel with the peace corps or they will whip your work ethic! Start around your country. Who says you have to go across the world first thing? It's a great start to start small so you're not breaking down trying to back out on day 2.

Yaaas 👏🏼 I am most definitely going to travel solo! The only thing holding me back currently is money and age. I live out in the middle of nowhere (literally.. like, no cities within 50 miles in any direction 😂) so making money is a bit of a challenge, but I'm doing it 💪🏼. I turn 18 in about 10 months, and then I plan on setting off and exploring this beautiful home of ours!

I looooooooooove traveling alone! 98 percent of time, I prefer to be solo because I hate having to think about other people when I'm trying to have fun and explore a new place. Lol is that mean? But, these are good tips for the rare occasion I actually want to have some type of human contact. Especially the hostel events. I never would have thought of that.

Great ideas, great information! I like traveling solo, but it does get lonely sometimes. One fun way I have found to meet and interact with people is to offer to take their photo. See someone struggling to take a decent selfie? Offer to help out...put them in a nice pose...and snap their photo. They are so appreciative, and lots of time they will return the favor!

Great video, i agree 100 percent. I just finished my second solo journey in Poland and it was everything i was hoping. Met so many amazing people, and now i am so comfortable traveling alone. Both times i traveled i stayed in a hostel, and i absolutely loved it. Just like you said...game night, movie night, pub crawl. endless activities. Also my biggest obstacle when i first traveled solo was language. I speak Spanish and English, so the first time i went to Prague i was happy that most people spoke English. That taught me a lesson though, so went i traveled to Poland i made sure i knew some basic polish and it made a world of difference meeting locals.

I'm so glad that I found this channel! After taking my first trip out of the US in early August with my extended family, I've found myself thinking a lot about traveling, particularly traveling by myself. However my mother, who's opinion I greatly respect, had essentially scared me away from the idea of traveling alone; now I feel a little more secure. I just need to conquer my fear of the unknown, lol 😅
Thank you so much for this video!

You just need to do it and think of it as an adventure.
Don't wait too long. Life is short.
I parents always had books and magazines in the house growing up so travel was on my mind since early grade school.
I've traveled to over 56 countries in 30 years and only met one black woman from U.S. off the beaten path.
The most I see are Canadian or European women. Many black women from Africa traveling solo.
Always meeting British school teachers for some reason in the pacific rim areas.
I work for American Airlines so I fly free anywhere and 90% discount on foreign airlines.
Offer my sisters passes to anywhere in the world or to come with me to go to safe places like Hong Kong or Singapore or a month in the Cooks and they are afraid to go anywhere.

I loooove solo travel. While solo travel doesn't mean that you're traveling alone, it gives you more control of when you are alone, and I love that. Can't think of any more tips. Yours were practical and spot on!

    Re. #2, I couldn't agree more.
It also helps if you're outgoing. Since I was a pre-schooler, I've walked up and started talking to people. Not mandatory, but it's another tool for your box.
Camping. People in campgrounds are almost 100% open to meeting people, even inviting you over to their campfire, as happened to me back in '84 in Alaska. Guest houses would work the same way, as opposed to hotels. I had that experience in French Polynesia and Jamaica.
I also think it's easier in rural areas rather than cities.
Another thing, ignorant Americans, is to know something about the country you're in. It would be a serious faux pas to say, "Now let's see. I'm in Thailand; is this part of Australia?" It would be good to know things such as that they speak Thai, the capital is Bangkok, they're in SE Asia, and the #2 city is Chiang Mai. Learning how to say thank you and hello is also a good move.
Last of all, a genuine smile goes a long way.

Bella Femme i used my points with southwest airlines. and i stayed in an awesome bed and breakfast called Casa Primo which i found on booking.com. however you will need to stay at different locations to she CR properly, i wished i knew that cause everything is far away from each other unless you stay in the city, which is boring. i cant stay at a hostel but it may be good for you, they are cheap.

Amazingly amazing! Excellent video. I've traveled the world and we share the same cool tips/hacks as solo travelers. I remember sometimes back when I was working for a construction firm in London, they would pay for our hotel when traveling for work. I had to talk to the HR that I would rather get my per Diem rates because I wanted to stay in a hostel. That resonates so well with your experiences and I can see that I'm not the only one who avoids staying in a hotel where everybody is busy on their computers traveling for business.
Couchsurfing.com has also picked up so well and you can attend events organized by locals which are quite handy as they really treat you well and are all ears to hear about your city and travel adventures. Thanks once again for taking the effort to make the video and keep up the balanced personality. 👏 👍👍

Thank you for this! I've been trying to hype myself up to finally take a solo trip, but being a bit introverted, I've been hesitant to take the plunge. I'll keep this video in my back pocket for when I finally book that flight!

This is the case for me too...my friends aren't interested in travel and I don't how I'd do alone 😞

Very nice informative video Oneika! Great tips. I am a solo traveler by choice and had great experiences during my international travels. I make sure to go to places outside of my comfort zone. Keep up the good work! Great TH-cam channel!

This video is old lol but I just started watching these kind of things bc I am planning my 1st solo trip outside the U.S. this year. This was actually the most helpful video I've found so far. I'm no introvert. Far from it. But still I feel sketchy about some things. This was greatly appreciated! Thank you so much!

Great tips, thank you for sharing! I often travel solo because it's part of my job and it makes me difficult to travel with. Now it sounds like all the people commenting should connect!

i want to do a solo trip to Puerto Rico and stay at a hostel to meet new people, how can you convince family members to go without them judging you thinking its pointless traveling solo?

It depends on where I'm going, how I'm traveling and why on whether I care to travel solo. I enjoy cruising solo and going to familiar cities domestically (especially cruising)...I have only traveled solo internationally when working. I guess I'm saying that I needed this video!!!! LOL..
