Yo recomendé sus video a mi novia. Se llama Priyanka. Somos de India. A ella le encantan sus videos. Me dijo que son increibles. Sus videos nos han ayudado mucho. Muchas gracious Cynthia y Gordon.
Im a native spanish speaker and really enjoyed this vid. Probably the first time I ever stopped and thought about the differences between por and para. Cleverly explained.
Dya know what gordon, i have struggled with por and para for months. Tried all sorts of memory aids and still i got it wrong , snd sll the time it was so simple. 3 little symbols is all it took. Youre amazing. No youre a genious.
BEST explanation of the difference between 'por' and 'para' I've watched yet!! I will definitely ONLY be watching your vids from now on to learn Spanish!!
Very very helpful no-nonsens video, thank you very much YT suggested La Bamba. And the lyrics went: Para bailar la bamba.. Ah the arrow, the result yes.. Por ti seré por ti seré.. And I understood, why it is por. New subscriber here. :-)
Gordon, I'm addicted to your videos. As a new online returning student, you make everything so easy and so easy to remember. I can't say it enough, ¡Muchas gracias! :)
this is prob the best por and para and even most relaxing lesson ive seen on youtube. it dousnt even feel like a lesson, it feels chilled. thanks for making this video
Now I get why the title of this song 'Por ti volare - Andrea Bocelli' is with 'por' because for you (my motivation) I will fly. This video is hands down the best explanation of por and para. Thank you!! Legend!
Two minutes in and I just paused to subscribe. After watching three other videos on other channels I can already tell that this will be the one that finally clicks. Thank you so much!
Every time we study por vs para in my class, I look up this video as a refresher. Always very helpful! I'm in Spanish 4 now and I think I first found the video when I was in Spanish 2!
Finally! An explanation I can wrap my head around. I've had this "por" and "para" conundrum bouncing around in my head for decades! Sigh of relief because my OCD can finally relax.
I saved this video in my browser back in 2013 (I'm Spanish but I found it very useful and interesting) And it seems there's still people who use this as a good reference! Anyway, I feel like I should clarify something: The phrases like "I will buy something for Christmas" (or any other festivity) are not quite clear, as you can use both "por" and "para". "Compraré algo PARA Navidades" is correct, as it's a deadline and a specific date. It means you will buy something in Christmas days. "Compraré algo POR Navidades" is also correct, as Navidades is a festivity and is the reason why you will buy something. It means you will buy something because it's Christmas. In real life, both meanings are quite the same so it doesn't really matter what do you say. I feel like "PARA" is more used in latino-américa, while "POR" is more used in Spain. Just wanted to say that! Have a good day :)
Thank you! This is the best video explaining the difference between para and por. Everybody say por for motivo and para for objetivo, but without having good example to differentiate, i was having difficult time understanding. Your example of husband killing some guys for his wife made the distinction very clear. Muchas gracias!
THANK YOU. THANK YOU. HELPED.... HELPING....TAKING THE PAIN AWAY! STUDYING TO BE A SPANISH TEACHER....HAVE TO MORE THAN KNOW...HAVE TO UNDERSTAND... ALL OF YOUR VIDEOS ARE AWESOME. THANK YOU SO MUCH, AGAIN.
You gave an excellent lesson with simple visual clues to explain how and when to use "por" and "para" correctly. Although 15 minutes seems like a long time, I think many classroom teachers would spend at least three times as much time to explain it, but still not explain it as well. It's a good investment of your time to understand those two extremely common words which we English speakers often confuse in Spanish. :)
Your explanation and examples are excellent. You're a gifted teacher. If you have time and inclination, I'd imagine you'd do an excellent job in helping intermediate level Spanish learners with advanced grammar.
Excellent video, really helped me out. I think the single most useful part of this video is the idea that when in doubt, use 'para'. I've found this to be so true. Gracias!
Thanks for a clear and illustrative description. Sounds like some of the use of por is more like per than it is like for. Especially the uses you are illustrating with the x. I am not very far into learning Spanish but the words that separate one word in English by multiple meanings are so interesting.
This is a VERY helpful video. If you have trouble with POR and PARA, stop here for 15 minutes with Gordon! The little symbols he uses (arrow, squiggly line, and X) are clever devices for understanding the difference.
Hahaha. Thanks, Tia. I'm pleased it helped. Have you done the test to see if you understood the concepts? Check the playlists, It's there with Por and Para.
Escuché su video PARA aprender y POR divertido. If what I said is correct, you are the GREATEST language teacher that ever lived, because I never understood the difference before.
Thank you for CLARIFYING the " por & para ". I just found you're videos and I am really enjoying the lessons. I bought Rosetta Stone to learn Latin American Spanish, but they don't translate anything and it can get frustrating. Keep up the great work & muchas gracis y tienen un gran dia !!!!
This is one of those topics that I've had to learn and relearn because it just doesn't stick. I think assigning shapes to the words might just do the trick. Thanks so much, Gordon.
Another excellent video...I have been wrestling with this PARA/POR ever... I think it's PARA - 'end result' - at least I hope it is...Maybe I have over complicated it but whenever I do those exercises where you put in either Para or Por I still get some wrong and try and over think the answer... Cheers. Andy. Note Anymore gems with 'tricks or diagrams' like this please keep em coming...I learn loads this way...rather than just grammar stuff.. Thanks again..
I've read grammar books and web pages and watched videos on this subject but this is THE best explanation I've seen for por vs. para. Thanks for uploading this video.I believe that I have a much better grasp of the subject now. :)
Wooooow!!! I really understand after your video. I am thankful. Thank you so much for this visual explanations. Arrow and the circle symbol. I am really happy about your vid. Please keep going. Salud from Germany.
I had this video saved for a while and finally watched it tonight - great explanation Gordon - incredibly helpful. Muchísimas gracias!!! Paul (the guy you bumped into in Aldi in Darlington last year😊).
I had watched a lot of videos and read a lot..still didn't help me to figure out the difference between these two..u did a a great work..now i mastered in it..muchas gracias profesor.
This is brilliant. Not only do you sort the para and por into easily identifiable cases but you give visuals, a memory and decision hook. I like your style and subscribed to take advantage of your clear and simple teaching. ¡Muchas gracias!
Gordon, this is brilliant. I found the link on duolingo - which I love - and it has really helped. As a fellow Northerner (Manchester via Yorkshire) I love the "para is the arra" :) Just wanted to say thanks for the video. muchas gracias!
Gordon thank you so much pet for this amazing video!I have struggled with this for a while and as soon as you said "para for the arrow" in those dulcet tones(I am from Northumberland)I was like got it!So happy!I will be watching more of your videos as it is nice to hear a friendly voice and also someone speak spanish who has an english accent like me!
Good explanation! I learned from a Spanish speaking friend to just use para and you'll be okay 75% of the time. Unfortunately, when someone speaks to me correctly I get confused when they use por. This video really helped. Thanks
Hi Gordon and Cynthia! I started writing this in Spanish but then realised that some readers will be beginners so thought I had better put my comment in English. I've been learning Spanish for many years, with teachers from various parts of the Spanish speaking world and I've travelled a good deal in Central and South America: lucky me! In all that time, I never found anything as helpful as your lessons. Even in my current advanced class, our Mexican teacher, (who is great fun and very good), still goes over things like Por y Para, Ser y Estar, etc. and I have advised her and the others in the class to look for Lightspeed Spanish as the explanations are so good. I enjoy your light, easy manner and it's always good fun, listening to you and Cynthia together. Please, keep it up: estupendo!!!
Great lesson! A lot of help and a great "out of box" explanation that is very helpful. I am a visual oerson ( visual artist) and your explanation really reaonated...Muchas gracias! Profesor!
Learned the acronym PERFECT to represent Para. Purpose Employment Recipient Future point in time Effect (its soon to be done) Contrast Through / Towards
I have mastered para and por and rarely get them wrong through your 'para is the arra' (arrow) method Gordon. I can now easily recognise that 'para' is destination, deadline, end result, plus 'para ser español bla bla...' and that someone is going to receive. And now that I thoroughly recognise 'para' I also therefore know when it's NOT 'para' and therefore needs to be 'por'. Instead of learning both, say, 75% and having to think too much, I've learned one ie 'para' thoroughly. This has worked for me and I really don't need to think any more. Becoming very automatic. Muchas gracias por este video! Hope my funny little trick may help others!
This is the second time I have watched this, and again thank you for posting!! What hit me this time around is that "para" usually has an end point and stops (thus your brilliant arrow symbol)....and how do we say "stop" in Spanish?? ....."para!"
honestly it helped a little bit. i have a Spanish quiz tomorrow and i could not understand por and para for the life of me but the symbols really helped :) every spanish class should use that tactic!! Muchas Gracias!! :D
Gordon, hay que cantar para entretenernos y por el aprendizaje ... "y es por ti"(You are my reason/ motivation) ... (Juanes) [ por ejemplo] . I recently discovered this channel. Excelente canal con profesores fantasticos! (:
I'm teaching myself Spanish which requires a lot of searching at times. I really love this channel and I find the last example in this lesson very helpful!
this is really useful. I have really basic Spanish. And I am just back from Argentina, and I was switching between Para & Por on instinct but I felt I was getting it right. this video will help me work it out with more sound basis going forward. gracias!
Thank you for your detailed explanation. I knew my understanding was rudimentary at best, but the most I could find was vague to say the least. This was incredibly helpful. Thank you again!
¡OH muchas gracias señor por ese video! ...Did I use it right? haha, i am in the beginning of my third year of this language, desperately trying be fluent eventually haha. This video helped me so much, so I took lots of notes and subscribed :D
Thanks for this this excellent lesson. I've struggled a bit with por and para but this really helps. I think it would be fitting to thank you in Spanish, as well, in order to put what I've learned in practice. Muchas gracias por esta excelente lección. If I understood your lesson correctly, I'm using por instead of para in the above sentence because there is no destination. I'm simply offering thanks in exchange for your lesson. As in when you offer money in exchange for goods.
Exactly! Muy bien hecho. It's an exchange...or your motivation behind the action. The only thing I would change would be este a esta....just because lección es una palabra feminina.
LightSpeed Spanish Gracias por la correction! Ya sé que todas las palabras en espanol que terminan en '-ión' son femininas (al menos todas las que yo sé). Pero cometer errores es parte del proceso de aprendizaje. He corregido la sentencia ahora.
I got two wrong. The one that is the exception for para; dealing with comparisons. And I can't remember the other one. But considering these Por and Para videos are my very first entrance into Spanish lessons and I only watched once, that speaks volumes for your teaching abilities. Your usage of visual impressions is wonderful. Muchas gracias.
Muchas gracias! hace un par de días traté de explicar este concepto a algunos amigos que también están aprendiendo Español y la verdad es que es algo complicado, pero tu idea de visualización es excelente. Saludos!
The arrow replaces all the rules I have to remember, and when in doubt, para. Genius. One thousand thumb ups.
¡Gracias! :D
Years of Spanish class and I feel like I finally get it after a 15 minute video. Muchas gracias!!
VisionOfFreedom Great news. I'm glad it helped:)

YT suggested La Bamba. And the lyrics went:
Para bailar la bamba..

¡Bienvenida, Nane! :)
By far the most helpful video ever. This is the reason why you need more than one teacher! Por eso! 😊

Took a por and para test on studyspanish.com, got 16/20 first time, made mental notes of my errors, took it again and got 20/20, thanks lightspeed :)

Delita Rae Wright Gracias, Delita. Me gusta tu comentario mucho:)
You are an excellent teacher. Thank you so much. That was clear and well done!
Hola tío! Este vídeo me ha ayudado mucho! Ahora sé cuando usar los dos.

I have been learning Spanish for 10 years now and I still struggle with this!! You have really helped. Thanks so much!
Gracias. Nos gusta que te haya ayudado. :)
Thanks for the excellent visual explanation. It is easier than remembering all of the rules for por y para.
+butterflybeatles You're welcome:)
This is soooo helpful - thank you! I live in Peru but there are no Spanish classes in my town so I've remained confused about por & para. Until now!
Sandy Olkowski I'm so pleased it helped:)
Wonderful explanation of a word I feared and misused for a long time. Your precise explanation was spot on. Thank You
De nada. Un placer.:)
Great lesson! A lot of help and a great "out of box" explanation that is very helpful. I am a visual oerson ( visual artist) and your explanation really reaonated...Muchas gracias! Profesor!
Learned the acronym PERFECT to represent Para.
Purpose
Employment
Recipient
Future point in time
Effect (its soon to be done)
Contrast

This is the second time I have watched this, and again thank you for posting!! What hit me this time around is that "para" usually has an end point and stops (thus your brilliant arrow symbol)....and how do we say "stop" in Spanish?? ....."para!"
Absolutely the most helpful explanation on use of por & para. Muchas gracias
Muchas gracias, Steve. We also have a book on Por and Para with homework on Amazon (Pocket Por and Para) :)
Muchas gracias por este video!! He estado aprendiendo espanol por un a?o y tengo todavía dificultad con estas palabras! Me encantan tus videos!!
By the way I seen other spanish teachers and I think this is the best, only a very few mistakes. Congratulations.
Gracias :)
Thanks for the video. This actually helped me understand the uses of "por" y "para".
undertheapi Fantastic!
honestly it helped a little bit. i have a Spanish quiz tomorrow and i could not understand por and para for the life of me but the symbols really helped :) every spanish class should use that tactic!! Muchas Gracias!! :D

¡Muchas gracias! ¡Bienvenido! :)
Yet another fantastic and easy to learn explanation. Thanks Gordon.
Thanks. That was the first time it's been explained to me that I started understanding. People underestimate the power of visuals.
Excellent, Dane.
I'm teaching myself Spanish which requires a lot of searching at times. I really love this channel and I find the last example in this lesson very helpful!
Serenity X Gracias, Serenity. :)
Muchas gracias por este video.. Best one yet!
Would love to have a teacher like you :) Thanks for your videos. Greetings from Germany.
¡Muchas gracias! :) Saludos desde Guadalajara en España.
Thank you thank you thank you! Our class only skimmed on this and now we have a test tomorrow but this helps immensely!
this is really useful. I have really basic Spanish. And I am just back from Argentina, and I was switching between Para & Por on instinct but I felt I was getting it right. this video will help me work it out with more sound basis going forward. gracias!
¡A ti! :) Cxx
Really really excellent video. I was muddle up for so long, you've sorted it out for me, a million thanks!!!
I agree-thank you so much-that was the best explanation I have had in 12 months of studying Spanishmuchas gracias amigo
Excellent explanation, the best I've heard.
¡Muchas gracias! :)
Thanks so much! The glyphs really helped me. If I can visualize something, it is so much easier for me to understand and retain.
Great! I'm pleased they helped. :)
Thank you for your detailed explanation. I knew my understanding was rudimentary at best, but the most I could find was vague to say the least. This was incredibly helpful. Thank you again!
Maxine Kurtz Thanks a lot! Nice comment.:)
¡OH muchas gracias señor por ese video! ...Did I use it right? haha, i am in the beginning of my third year of this language, desperately trying be fluent eventually haha. This video helped me so much, so I took lots of notes and subscribed :D
Wow ... perfect.. thank you for such a clear and concise explanation
Thanks for this this excellent lesson. I've struggled a bit with por and para but this really helps.
I think it would be fitting to thank you in Spanish, as well, in order to put what I've learned in practice.
Muchas gracias por esta excelente lección.

Gracias por la correction!
Ya sé que todas las palabras en espanol que terminan en '-ión' son femininas (al menos todas las que yo sé). Pero cometer errores es parte del proceso de aprendizaje.
He corregido la sentencia ahora.
He aprendido mucho más de mis errores que de todas mis frases súper correctas. Me encanta cometer errores...(y me da mucha vergüenza a la vez jeje)
+TheRoxyblues Muchas gracias:) I really appreciate your positive comment.
Very good explanation. I speak Spanish 20% of the time and I have been making mistakes with por and para for years.
I'm glad that it helped!
Best explanation ever. Now I have to implement it. Thanks
