Chapters like 125 are why I keep reading this manga despite the most recent disappointments. The emotional core of it is just so different from anything else I've seen, so strong, it's really a rare gem for me. 15:50 In light of more recent chapters, moments like this make me think what Soo-won said in this chapter isn't fully true or just ignorant on his part. I don't doubt he likes people but looking at him talking about how interesting Soo-jin's lectures are made me a little sus. It's probably like Hak says, he was always seeing further than he let on; he was most likely trying to establish a relationship with Soo-jin so he'd support Soo-won becoming king. We know he does things that're more for the efficiency for his plans while making it seem more natural, like when he introduced himself to Lily as a merchant. As for the rest, it's mostly idiolization on Hak's part, making him completely misunderstand Soo-won. 15:49 and 24:54 stand out in particular; Hak was choosing the more favourable interpretations of his friend when truth is, Soo-won's just too used to compartentalization, too much in his own circumstances to allow himself emotions. Hak says that he's "not attached to anyone in particular" but this is hardly true, is it? Soo-won really loves Hak and Yona, Geun-tae, the people from the wind tribe and more. You could argue this counts as the "people" he's mentioning, but he has unique reasons to love all of them more deeply, not to mention Yona and Hak. He admits as much in some moments, but just like with the things he doesn't like, he doesn't tend to give himself the space to allow these things to matter, sometimes to even acknowledge them. I wonder if he could really be as "impartial" if hadn't been raised into and carried over these practises of locking away parts of himself. Cuz he's already not impartial when you think about it! Soo-won hates Hiryuu and anytime it comes to him, he's prone to making hasty or unbeneficial decisions. Take his continued insistence over not using the dragons (even in the beginning of them being on the same side, castle arc), or wanting to kill Mei-nyan immediately after she revealed what she knows. Or how he defended his dad having dumped the heads of those prisoners in Xing. He's clearly biased in some ways, but he himself doesn't seem to be aware of it. There was also the hairpin which was completely selfish on his part. And I wish Kusanagi would come back to Lily's perspective already so we can see her give the hairpin back to Yona and finally see some development with it. I hope Lily learns about how Yona got it, she's the only person besides Yona who can see just how fragmented Soo-won is. I also just love their interactions lol I ship Soo-won and Lily a little but as a fellow aro ace person, I'd also be happy to see him stay single too (though it's a bit bitter sweet since I think it's his compartmentalization and his bloodline issues that made him unable to consider it, it's not like all aro people never experience romantic attraction in their whole lives, and outside forces can influence things too). At this point, I'll be perfectly happy as long as he's alive and preferably still king, regardless of romance or no romance lol
I really love your take on Soowon because it feels so true to his character without any clear show of bias to liking or disliking him. There are so many different views on Soowon from the cast based on what they know, even from Soowon himself, but it feels like none of them are really completely true. Hak’s especially, because he’s so in the dark about Soowon. Like, I don’t even think he knows the whole Yuhon being killed by Il stuff. There’s just so many true parts of Soowon that only select people know but it’s impossible for them to get the full picture because those parts are muddled with their own perceptions of Soowon. Lili has such a clear hold in such a weird way because, like water, she’s just so uninvolved yet seeps through every crack with such an unfiltered vision. It’s likely because she’s witness to everyone’s current selves and can’t have her perception muddled by previous memories or experiences as the daughter of a very uninvolved until third party, meaning she can only see people by how they currently are. Her role is so fun in the way that she’s just close enough to all the key characters to view everyone’s side in a neutral light while knowing so little.
I will fight you. Doesn't Lily wonder if he's trying to dodge the question right after this? Plus a second ago, she wondered if he knew about Yona's feelings for him because he acts like he can't relate to Lily's hopeless love for Geuntae.

In extra chapter 191.5 (set in an alternative universe where they are in a modern day society) the HHB is talking about how Soo Won rejects Yona because he "just doesn't feel romantic emotions". About Soo Won avoiding the question, I don't think so. Throughout the manga, Soo Won consistently doesn't understand nor care for romance. And he feels uncomfortable whenever they mention it, probably because he doesn't like being shipped with anyone (especially when Geun Tae and the other tribe leaders are so insistent with him and Lili).

She did. Hak doesn't know. When Yona confessed in chapter 1, Soo won did not reject her, he even says that he sees her like a woman now and can't sleep with her, which doesn't make sense unless sexual feelings are involved. Additionally, upon Il's death, when he asks her why she came into the room, she says it was because she wanted to tell Il that she could never forget him (since he gave the hairpin). This is the same thing Lily said about Geuntae, she can't forget even though it won't work out. Also, it's the same thing that Soo won tells about Yona when his guards ask about the Awa woman, that she is unforgettable. So rather than not understanding, I feel like he could be forcing himself to not understand when it comes to Yona's hopeless love for him... otherwise it perhaps (?) could have stopped him. That hairpin has everything to do with his actual feelings. Even with sexuality not being involved, his circumstances are clearly interfering with having a love life, so how can he be labelled?

Since even in Yon-hi's memoir we see her wondering why he is so dispassionate, and Hak also comes to the conclusion that he's not attached to anyone in particular, likes and sees all humans as a thing of interest. He even talks about not putting the things in the same box with his plans for murdering King Il, which implies that he simply chooses to ignore the feelings that have no purpose towards the fulfillment of his present goals. After all, he's been planning for this since he was 9. He's never bothered to wonder about other things like those. What's more, he knows he won't live long so there's not much point in having romantic attachments. What I mean is, since he doesn't feel deep attachment with anyone in particular, romantic or not, so him being asexual doesn't answer all the questions.
