Please guys. JJ Lin is Singaporean of Chinese ethnicity. Born, raised and grew up in Singapore and still is Singaporean. It exasperates me that many Americans still mistake Singapore as being part of China. It is not. Singapore is an independent multicultural city in SEA.
JJ is Singaporean but debuted in Taiwan. As a Singaporean who took Mandarin Chinese as a second language, English was actually his stronger first language. The Chinese taught in SG is Simplified Chinese, but when he started in Taiwan, everything was in Traditional Chinese. To improve his Traditional Chinese, he wrote daily journal entries in Traditional Chinese, wrote song lyrics and basically forced himself to immerse in the language and use it so that he was good enough to debut in Taiwan. Many people had caustic comments that disparaged him when he was younger. Not understanding some Taiwanese slang and the nuances of the local language there also made him get laughed at by some variety show hosts or people who called the shots in the local music scene. He kept working hard and used every setback as a setup to do better. People said he’s not handsome, so he groomed himself. Said he could not dance, he went to South Korea to learn how to dance and even hired SK dancers for his concert. Said he could not rap, he wrote and performed rap songs to diss those haters. Said he could not sing, he went to the US to learn from one of the best vocal coaches there. He really beat all the odds because being a singer and pursuing his dream was unheard of and no one ever thought he could succeed. It was sheer hard work, his genuine sincerity and grit that gave him his success today.
Ive been listening to his songs casually since I was young, but never dig any info about him deeper. I went to his concert in Indonesia last month and got a whole new admiration for him... These stories about him, first time I knew it. .I've always liked his singing, can't believe he was once told not good at it?? I thought he was considered gifted!
What?? JJ is Chinese from Singapore, 70% of Singapore are Chinese. His Mandarin may not have been perfect when he was young he still spoke it at home with his parents. FORCED himself into the language? What????
JJ Lin is pitch perfect and his nickname is a walking CD. JJ Lin is from Singapore and he had many collaborations with many international artists including Jason Mraz and Anne-Marie. I freaking love his compositions. This song is just for him to show off his vocal techniques. Pls react to his performance of Disney Medley.
JJ Lin also known as the walking CD in the whole Asia, he’s definitely the best Chinese vocalist ever. That’s why Han Hong said: “There won’t be another JJ Lin after a 100 years”.
JJ Lin is a versatile singer and talented song-writer. He was born and bred in Singapore and is not from China! He also sings in English and other languages too. We, Singaporeans, are proud of our JJ Lin, the international singing star! 🇸🇬😊
This show is called "Sound of My Dream". Amateur singers are given the chance to "challenge" a celebrity tutor (JJ is one of them) by singing one of the celebrity's songs. In exchange, the celebrity is assigned one of four randomly selected songs (not allowed to sing own songs and has three hours to come up with a cover performance of the song. JJ has been in music industry for more than 20 years. He have alot of nice songs including English songs. He has an official TH-cam channel as well - @jjlin. Hope more reactions on his songs/ performance. ❤❤❤
+1. And the celebrity selected to compete had only a few short hours to come up with a different version of the assigned song. Very interesting and enjoyable program.
JJ Lin is ethnically Chinese and sings primarily in Mandarin, but he is from Singapore, not China. You can also hear him sing in English on the Shang-Chi soundtrack. The Mandarin song he's singing is a cover of a 90's hit by the Taiwanese duo, Ukulele.
Great reaction LOVED it. I would also LOVE it if you could do more JJ Lin. He is one of, if not the top Singer-songwriters in the C-pop world. While he is doing a cover here, his writes his own songs that have won an untold number of award and accolades. By the way, his music production company rearranged the song in this show. He joined this music show in order to promote his production company which was relatively new then in order so show off their song production and arrangement skills as this show is about veteran singers rearranging classics and performing them in a completely new way. Thus, music analysis part of your reaction really hits the spot.
Ya, Jj❤ got a lot of super great powerful skill & technique vocal recover famous songs in this same show. He is a best vocal singer🎤🎼to me.... 🙏🏻💪🏻🤴🏻👍🏻
JJ Lin is an amazingly versatile singer. This song was from a competition program ‘Sound of my Dream’ which had 3 seasons and he was in all of them. He has collaborated with Anne-Marie, Steve Aoki, Luis Fonsi, and also did a Filipino song called ‘Hanggang’.
JJ Lin is a Singaporean singer songwriter.. that's why he's very good in spicing things up with the song like the chord progressions and other stuff.. he's an amazing singer songwriter.. hope u do more reactions to him too.. there's also a concert version of him singing with Charlie Zhou Shen
I am so bummed I missed your reaction, especially to the new artist for me. Oh, well, chilling on the beach is hard work! 😎 Such a pleasant voice! I liked listening to JJ.
JJ Lin is a Singaporean singer, composer, songwriter, producer, and he's got many Mandarin songs, but can also sing in English, as many Singaporeans are at least bilingual in English and their mother tongue. In this case, since JJ Lin is ethnically Chinese, his mother tongue would be Mandarin. In the Mandopop world, he's one of the legends now. When Ed Sheeran had a concert in Singapore, he sang with JJ Lin, and the song was in Mandarin. There is a live video of that performance floating about somewhere in TH-cam. Amazing how Ed picks up the Mandarin lyrics from JJ backstage so quickly, then performs the song with him onstage not long afterwards.
JJ Lin is one of the most popluar Cpop singer and songwriter. He has more than forty big hits and already wrote more than three hundred songs for other singers and himself. Please plz do more JJ Lin reaction! Very look forward to the next one!
He’s primarily English speaking, as all Singaporean are. We grow up educated and administered in English… from nursery. LOL Chinese is his second language….
I'm glad you introduced another singer with amazing talent. I've listened to a few of his other songs, and I'm adding them to my playlist. His music reminds me a little of the Carpenters, and I was a big fan. JJ Lin definitely must be added to your reaction schedule. I did a little research on him and found that besides being a singer, he is a songwriter, music producer, businessman, and novelist. I need to check out his writing next.
jj usually isn't a gritty singer, he's a lot more old school pop/r&b, but this is part of a singing competition where they were covering songs by other artists, and he's really good at putting his own spin on them. his own songs are a whole different flavour - it would be really cool if you covered one of his originals!
Thank you for doing the reaction of JJ. Greatly apperciated. As FYI, JJ Lin also had released English EP previously. Such as songs : Steady my Love, Like You Do, Head On, While I can, All In Your Mind, Not Tonight & The show with Steve Aoki, Bedroom with AnnMarie. He also had collab a song with Jason Marz (I’m Alive). Mandarin version of Despacito with Luis Fonsi etc etc. the teacher he had was the same teacher who taught Michael Jackson. Also, this song the name basically mean “it doesn’t matter if I win the world if I must lose you”
One of my Favourite singers/Musicians you should hear the English and Chinese versions of Frome the Ashes. There are just so many songs!!! to me JJ Lins voice is one of the most beautiful sounds in this world. Him, Dimash, Taemin, Stray Kids, Faouzia, Adam Lambert, Chung Ha, Baekhyun and DPR Ian.
JJ Lin is a well-known singer-songwriter in Singapore. When Zhou Shen was a student and before his debut, he imitated JJ Lin when he was singing online without showing his face.
Zhou Shen did a special appearance at JJ’s concert. JJ is a well known singer songwriter. Glad to see him on your show. I really enjoy Chinese music scene. I especially enjoy that they have music based shows with famous singers. Wouldn’t that be something in US. Check out Zhou Shen’s OST song for Decoded and his performances of Silence of the Lamb and Not a Word I believe from his latest musical variety show. He is just so good.
Proud of JJ Lin. Love from Singapore. I am still waiting for you to do live on Sohyang again. She has new song released not long ago. Hope to hear from you!
Thank you for your objective critique. It does show off both of your own musicianship, besides JJ Lin’s. I believe JJ Lin does most of his music recording in LA and he speaks English fluently. You could perhaps sound him out for some music collaboration?
Hi Richard and Johnny, I have watched several videos of you covering Zhou Shen and you both seemed to enjoyed him much especially when Charlie go on duo with another artist. There's a video, song name "Colorful Black" where you can find it on YT and I am sure you will enjoy it as well, worth checking it out when you do Charlie again.
I love his voice!! He’s one of my favorites!! Zhou Shen is Number one! But JJ and Zhou Shen have a performance together that’s not very old. You might try to find that it’s awesome. I believe it was the first time ever that they sang together.
JJ is ethnically Chinese, just like 70% of Singaporeans, he debuted in Taiwan, Tawainese people are ALSO ethnically Chinese, BOTH don't want association with Chinese from China because they're afraid of negativity which is mostly propaganda btw
Now almost everyone in the world knows WuKong from the game Black Myth : Wu Kong. Hua Chenyu composed two songs about Wukong, one is Qi Tian official MV(“Wu Hong” movie theme song), it is amazing. Another is Great Sage Equal to Heaven, he composed it in 24 hours. Hope you could react them 💕
