b. Merge join the block of sorted R with the block of sorted S in memory, writing the result to disk.
c. If the join result is not empty, write it to the final result relation.
d. If the block of sorted S in memory is exhausted, read the next block of sorted S into memory.
3. When all blocks of sorted R have been processed, the final result relation contains the join result.
This join algorithm is the fastest possible one to compute the join because it performs the minimum number of I/O accesses. Each block of sorted R is read only once and each block of sorted S is read only once. The join result is written to disk only once.
If there is a clustered index on attribute A of relation S, the sort-merge algorithm can be modified to use the index to avoid sorting S. The modified algorithm is as follows:
1. Sort relation R on attribute A and write it to disk as R_sorted.
2. For each block B of the clustered index of relation S on attribute A:
a. Read block B of relation S into memory.
b. Merge join R_sorted with block B of relation S in memory, writing the result to disk as R_S_join_B.
3. Merge the join results R_S_join_B into a single result relation R_S_join.
This modified algorithm performs fewer I/O accesses than the original sort-merge algorithm because it avoids sorting relation S. However, it requires a clustered index on attribute A of relation S, which may not always be available.
