Good ma man for trying to define some of the ordinary LIBERIAN colloquial. Liberia colloquial is the only and unique colloquial spoken in the world of its kind. Other colloquials are common between many countries. Ours can only be found among Liberians. Our way of speaking the English language locally has a long history and origin. The Portuguese traders were the first to reach the Liberian shores looking for spices and other commodities. They named several places and left a lot of their languages/words there. Then came the Spanish looking for gold and other stuffs. They too set up small settlements and left a lot of their words/language and names there. Then came the French follow by the German. They too stay for a little time and they left. Next came the American freemen of colour( ex-slaves). Since about 85 to 90% of them could read and write very little english, the broken English that they spoke from the Carolinas, Mississippi, Alabama, the Virginia, Maryland, Massachusetts, etc inter-mixed with the local colloquial and the local dialets to form what is spoken in Liberia today. just a quick info. We love our language because it is just strange, beautiful, and unique.

I didn't realize that pre_colonial and colonial Liberia had as many 'visitors' as you mentioned. This is quite an insight for me. I'm much better informed about the roots of 'colloqua'. :)

Yeh Liberians speak American English and they do sound American because of the history and they speak an American variant of African English just like how Ghana and Nigeria speak a British variant of African English so Liberian English is truly Americanized and their Kolokwa dialect has its roots from the Ebonic dialect that Afro-Americans and Non African-Americans speak and Liberian English is similar to the English spoken in the American East Coast but mainly more similar to the South of the East Coast, just sayin straight facts 💯

It would have been nearly impossible to convince me that he's caucasian had I not first seen an image of him. He has the accent right down to every phonics details. I found it delightful, hilarious, informative. I've been out of LIB for over 16 + years, so talk like "Balance " is new to me. Thank you for your dedication.

THANK YOU! I am a teacher in Iowa and we have a 9th grade Liberian student - daily I work with him in our English classroom (regular classroom, not ESL) and I try each day to learn something more about his culture. Today we watched a video and a woman was saying she needed a (word I don't know) to send her clothes to America - he said a word like 'bureau' but when I showed him photos of dressers or suitcases, he said that was not it. I know it started with a B. Do you have any idea what word she would have been saying and the English equivalent? Thank you SO MUCH for these videos!

A barrel... a container used to ship goods and clothing. Usually takes 2-3 months to get to your destination. The last syllable of words are usually dropped so makes a little difficult to understand initially.
