- 1958 A drive north on Highway 97 into Vernon, BC
Travel back in time when Vernon was a little town of 9000 people. Wonderful footage passing through town. There's quite a bit of dirt in the gate, so I cropped it a wee bit, stabilized and speed corrected, I'm quite happy with the footage.

That old tele a friend motel is still there.
It's wonderful, firstly, that someone took the time to make this mundane little video, and secondly, that you found it, and thirdly, that you would make the effort to reformat this for the internet. I wonder if the videographer knew that it would be so interesting to so many of us 60 years later? The camera and film were very expensive technology back in those days.
Andrew, I agree with all your points. I found it in Los Angeles, with a single frame that I recognized as being in the Okanagan, the film can was marked simply "Canada". 16mm cameras were always far more expensive than their little brother the 8mm/Super8, hence more serious cameramen & camerawomen preferred them. This individual somehow mounted the camera on or just behind the dash, rather impressive.
This was 10 yrs before I was born, but I grew up in Vernon and it was neat to recognize a lot of the stuff that was still around when I was a kid. Thanks!😊

Oh yes, they are definitely still there. The houses are gone though, now it's all stores.
The funny thing is all the military buildings and marching fields are still there along with the little mom and pop stores as I remember from the 1960’s .
Oh so good to see this video - grew up in this area & my family drove this road to Vernon as my uncle & aunt had cabins along the Shuswap lake - it was beautiful & untouched. Then at 16 y o my boyfriend at time , in 1967, lived in Vernon & we drove ( for entertainment ) up & down Main Street of the town , like in “ American Graffiti “ going to the local drive - in hop for burgers . It was magic , just clean, good innocent fun 😁🤗
This road was so quiet to drive, my dad actually hit a moose between Vernon & Kelowna on the road , lol he was ok . Moose died - don’t know rest of story but a lot of car damage, - I was only 6 y o when I heard this story. I have many memories of this lovely valley.

Highway 6 had indeed been constructed. Just not the interchange between 97 and 6. Excellent video.

I drove it only once around 1987. It SUCKED still. Then I went on to a an even worse new construction zone across the lake from Kokanee Springs.
My family always liked the 2 big campgrounds between Summerland and Penticton. Vernon is way to hilly for my bike riding tastes. I rode thru there in 2018, worst day in my 3,900 mile trip to N Oregon and around back to Edmonton. LOL. The only thing I ever liked in Vernon is the DQ and the flower clock park. I have a cousin there now, in the summer anyway. My best friend's family went to Woods Lake every year.
I was 4 in 1958 so don't remember, but my dad drove his 1952 Chev and wooden trailer to Vancouver on highway 3 likely.
Looks like Highway 6 ran along 30th/Barnard Avenue back then. You can see a "junction" sign for the two highways at 3:07.

Awsome find , I was born in 1959 so it's great to see the video of Okanagan (Vernon and hwy 97) in 195 8. Having lived in Kelowna all my life and Iv'e drove that road many times. Thx again.
At 1:30 if you look at the top left hand side you will see smoke. That is where the garbage dump used to be located and they burned what could be burned. I remember going there when I was a toddler.
Pretty much looked the same in the early 70's as I remember it.

Moved from Terrace to the Shuswap in 1976 when I was 11. Even that long after this was filmed so much of the area looks familiar. Much simpler and cleaner and really puts a lump in the throat. Thank you for posting these.

My family moved from Sask to Armstrong in 1948, me being born in 1947. Vernon and the entire OK Valley remains the cradle of my life.
My grandfather became the town (Armstrong) photographer (even though a hobbyist), and its current museum has quite a pictorial collection of his work.

I wish a video would be found of the Rogers Pass on early 50’s - I used to be terrified driving it with family - it looked like an old logging road , twisting & turning, no guard rails , my dad had to stop at each sharp corner on road & honk his horn , so we could keep going to our destination - the road was so narrow - yes, I was only 3 or 4 but do I remember, so clearly 😂
I remember our family drives over the Big Bend highway between BC and AB because I would always get ill and Dad would have to pull over to let me out to be sick. The rest of the family never had the problem I did. :) It was great when the then Minister of Highways, Phil Gagliardi, got the Rogers Pass upgraded, straightened and paved all the way through the Rockies in 1962.

Cool. That must have been the beta version of Google Street View back then. I spent the summer of 1970 at the Vernon Army Cadet Camp. That was a great summer. Vernon has certainly changed a great deal since.
I was first generation in my family to grow up around there. My father was a ranch hand in the Thomson and Fraser area. I've always preferred the Okanagan, from Vernon down to Oliver and Osoyos. I've always wondered what it was like in the 50s and 60s. Thanks for sharing.
My grand dad worked at the fruit union after the 1st world war.
My parents shopped there in the 70's. Big family, best deals!

Moved to Vernon in 1972. Interesting to see the changes in that time. And now mind blowing when I visited last in 2019. Has changed so much. So sad to see so many of the grand churches demolished for chains such as 7/11. Great video, thanks!
I was a newborn baby when this was filmed. So cool to watch. The first time our family came through the Okanagan was in 1966, on our way back to Chilliwack after being posted to Germany for 3 years. Now things have grown so much...you hardly recognize the place.

Went through there recently and yes, it looks so run-down now. And the traffic congestion is maddening!

Notice the colour of the centre line(s): white. The colour of lines separating traffic going in opposite directions switched to yellow in the late '60's.
An outstanding video, the quality is impressive. Too bad there are so many jumps, north of 30th ave for example as the video goes straight to a residential section, and I was wondering if the Volkswagen dealership was there and the old Super Valu. Just as a guess I'd say after 30th ave it picks up again north of 37th ave or so. I wonder what year 25th ave was built between highway 6 and 32nd st? How sure are you of the year, 1958? I was born in 1960 and I don't remember 25th ave not being there, and I also thought there was more than one set of tracks by the Fruit Union. Great video though.
Dave, thanks for the kind words. I'm pretty certain of the date, plenty of little clues, license plates, the lack of any 1959/60 cars, the renovations at the Vernon Military Camp, the edge code (single triangle) on the Kodachrome film, Highway 97 in front of the camp is still a single lane road I believe it was 1960 or 61 that a second southbound lane was added. When I can back into the archives I will check the old phone books for the commercial/retail addresses and back check the dates. Thanks!
@@ReelLifeCanada I wonder what year 25th was extended between Highway 6 and 32nd street. Also, when going driving beside the Military Camp you can see smoke on the hill above Swan Lake. I wonder if that is the old dump, or an orchardist burning slash. I think you are right about the time of year. Still just cannot get over the quality of that film. I'm assuming 8 mil, but the quality is amazing.

Wow.. That Standard Gas Station was closed around 73 and is no longer there... I remember going into it to as a kid... I'm glad you put this up.
The sad thing is just how much more vibrant and manicured Vernon was then compared to now.
Thank you for sharing these old videos. I was 8 when this was filmed. We were living in Kamloops at the time just having left the island a few months before. Then we moved on to Calgary. We travelled these highways back and forth every summer to visit family on the island. I have so many memories of the towns and roadways in the southern half of BC bc we travelled them so often in our ‘57 Chevy Belair in the ‘50s and 60s. We moved back to the coast eventually. Then I kept travelling over to Alberta to visit family and friends, summer and winter. It’s the best country in the world, but there sure have been a lot of changes. There is just something so peaceful and wonderful about travelling our highways through the mountains and stopping at a little roadside cafe for breakfast. ❤😊. Thank you for posting these old videos.
1:18 Brings back memories of when the highway would be stopped to march troops across the road before the tunnel was put in.😊❤
At 1:18 you can see snow capped Silver Star mountain in the right of the screen. Vernon looked so clean back then.
I attended the army cadet camp this year. One day the whole camp marched down this hill to Polson Park and lined the streets in the park for Princess Margaret who came into the park and opened the new flower clock in the park. The clock was very attractive and i often wonder if its still there.
At 1:50 the building on the left side that you refer to as a gas station I remember as the Dairy Queen where I used to stop when I had finished my paper round up the hill.

Towards the end of the video, you mention the CR Railway paralleling the highway on it's way to Kamloops. I believe that is the CN Railway rather than the CP Railway.Arthur Block
Oops, yes CN Rail, not CP. However the train running is a CPR freight, Tuscan Red and French grey and yellow trim colour scheme. Likely a GP9 and F7B unit. Which makes it all the more interesting. I'll have to ask some of my more experienced rail fan friends to come up with an answer as to why a CP train was on CN Track. The only answer I can come up with on short notice is damage and/or repairs to the Sicamous line.
@@ReelLifeCanada Traveling towards Kamloops on the Trans Canada Highway, it would be CPR on the right. CN runs north of Kamloops beside the Yellowhead Highway.

Cool. Lived all over here. Was hoping to see the O'Keefe General Store on way to Monte Lake. Lived at store when started school in 61.
Funny you mentioned O'Keefe General store, what about the little church on the ranch property adjacent to the highway and the farm house? Was expecting to possibly see those buildings. Great otherwise, you can't have everything.
@@fifermcgee5971 Our store although started by the same O'keefe's as the ranch, it is further on up the road on a railroad siding (O'Keefe siding) in the reserve. Has been Dan's piano repairs for years until 2010 at least. Cool video though, yes.

Is there footage of the highway that is now Old Kamloops Rd, between the downtown and Round Lake areas that showed in the video? I would be very interested to see what that stretch looked like, since our land is along there.

Actually he's a cable splicer for OK Tel. He's on a bowsmans chair, used on the cable strand to move to a trouble spot on a tel cable. Only was trained on one never had to use it. Proud former 20 yr employee of BC Tel! Cheers Roy

CanadaMotorSports / Reel Life I had a weird way of entering my time with BC Tel. After a stint in the Airbourne regiment, I applied to the telco, got hired as Gail Wentworth went to school with my Dad in Saskatchewan. New technologies were arriving but we were trained on the old also. Saw some historic things in telephony. Cheers again😊

I remember 97 like this in the early 70's. Compared to today, I much prefer the past with light traffic and mostly unscarred countryside.
Time hasn't been kind to this area.
