    I've been buying and selling on eBay for 24 years I think the biggest problem that resellers encountered was the pandemic. It created an artificial bubble in the online selling world. Selling anything online was easy and items went for a lot more than they should have. Everything is crashing back down to pre-pandemic. A lot of eBay resellers either don't remember pre-pandemic or started during the pandemic. I've pretty much have the same motto pre-pandemic during pandemic and post pandemic. Researching what items sell and what items don't sell. I sold collectibles during the pandemic at really inflated prices. I have gone to look back to see what those items are going for now and it's somewhere around a 70% drop in price. We all just need to put in a little bit more work to make this reselling business profitable.

      Yea, a lot of those new people were rejected by their jobs they thought they’d be at forever too so when they found out it was so easy to sell on eBay they were shocked after working for tools their whole lives. So to keep the magic going they lowered their prices a lot and tanked a lot of markets but not all. I sure miss buying and selling video games during the lockdown though. Just wow 😂😅

    Great video and observations. I've been selling on eBay since the mid-1990s and you can always count on change in the reselling and sourcing world. It was like that long BEFORE eBay was a thing. Flea markets, yard sales, auctions - if you were a collector or a reseller you knew that one year you might get lucky and score your favorite stuff (mine was buttons back in the day) for next to nothing. And then someone like Martha Stewart comes along and does something with buttons in a magazine and WHOH, now they cost a fortune. Or in sports a team you love was just mediocre and then they get good. Or the price of copper goes through the roof and you can't get those pipe scraps people used to throw away. I think as long as you love what you do, you keep yourself educated and you roll with the punches you will be able to survive most any change. You don't have to like it, but you shouldn't let it get you down or force you out of the game. Resellers are the best at making something out of nothing.

      the secret is to sell what other sites like that and Walmart and amazon don't sell so basically don't sell mass produced items where there are 100's or 1000''s it all comes down to knowing what categories to source anything you find at big box stores stay away from this is one of my rules it has not done me wrong in 25 years of full time reselling.

    Everything in the reselling is based on the individual. Me personally I only require $1200-$1500 @ month in sales I am retired with pension & insurance. I been doing ebay for 22 years my sales are not for household income it for my operation cost, and my grandson activities with his Pappy. My sales this year vrs last year are up 37.9% year to date. I personally focus on listing, good photos, good listing & ship daily.

    I really like the way you broke this down. Change is inevitable. Those who refuse to change, are often the ones struggling with sales. The way you change is completely up to you. I have zero desire to do live selling, but I have shifted the types of items I source multiple times in last few years and my sales have exploded. I do not always agree with your takes, but you hit this nail on the head. Thanks for the video.

    I started with eBay when it was called Auction Web. Back in the Good Ole days. After the name change, I started my eBay account Oct ‘97 and spent the next 20+ years buying and selling occasionally. I just got serious about selling about 3 years ago. There have been so many changes not only on eBay but the market space in general. I think that we have to embrace change regardless of where it comes from. There is no harm in selling on other spaces if you are good with it. I sell on Mercari and Poshmark and will probably start selling on Whatnot next year. I like knowing that I have some diversification should something go wrong on any platform. We don’t know what is coming next or what could happen to any of these selling platforms. Be prepared or be prepared to be left out. Change will come whether we like it or not. Great Video again and a well thought out subject. Thanks Kevin!

      yep Diversification is KEY to having a successful online reselling business i started full time in 98' and diversified from the start on ebay amazon and yahoo auctions now 25 years later im on 10 plus platforms my own website and i do face to face sales via FB marketplace, Craigslist, Flea Markets and setting up at shows. You have use any and all reselling avenues that you can to really stay afloat and ahead of your competition im just glad i was taught about diversification 25 years ago by a wise reseller told me to make divarication the center of your business diversify where you source, what you source, where you sell and the price points at what you sell at if you do all these you will never have to worry and you will never be beholden to any one platform or reselling channel if you have multiple eggs in your reselling basket

      If you don't have a TH-cam channel, don't use whatnot. You have to give stuff away. I had a show with 50+ Items and started the bids at 50-60% lower than eBay prices and didn't sell a single thing. Small sellers on Whatnot get taken advantage of.

I started on Ebay, focused on Amazon for awhile (realized that was not for me), now I am focused again on Ebay with a smattering of Mercari, Posh & Whatnot. Ebay is my comfort zone. I am trying to up my average sale price. Love Dobbie! He is living his best life now.

    Excellent excellent info Kevin. I think that (sometimes ) it’s good to explore new options and be open to ways of selling. But I also think resellers need to be mind of not chasing every new Shiny Object that comes around (WhatNot, District, etc) because sometimes that only dilutes our efforts. Thank you for articulating what’s been on my mind lately so perfectly. I appreciate you!

    I'm a relatively new re-seller and have ONLY used Mercari so far, I'm going to start an Ebay as well sometime soon but so far Mercari has been awesome for me and I've just been putting my focus there. One notion I have,is Ebay is so much bigger than other platforms and has so many users sure, but it also has so so many sellers on it that you're in a bigger ocean. I'm not sure if there's any weight to thought, but maybe the newer platforms can be beneficial to sell on because there's less stuff for your stuff to get lost in. Who knows... I love reselling thus far though

      100% correct its just ebay resellers especially the new ones that went full time during the pandemic just have been refusing to diversify! i diversified right off the bat in 98' when i went full time started on ebay , amazon and yahoo auctions and just about every other platform that has come along. i can confer that sites with less sellers you will make more sale since there is more pie to go around and as you said your item wont get lost in the ocean etsy, poshmark and mercari were really good in 2017 but as more sellers have slowly started to diversify i have noticed a tick down in sales on those sites but id never stop selling on other sites a sale is a sale and if its the same item listed on ebay that is selling on these other platforms it sure tells me something about ebay and should tell many other resellers the same thing. for example if you have 10,000 items in your ebay store if you list those on 10 other sites that is 10x the amount of eyes that would be on those items compared to if you just had it listed on ebay there is no excuse not to diversify not wanting or willing to diverisfy tells me one thing about the person as a reseller they are lazy and technsports stated on a video he did with mel that 99.9% of resellers are lazy he is 1000% correct on that

    I am wondering if you’ve seen search spotlighting by eBay? I explain this by eBay listing high end reseller items first in the search of the same items? A buyer search leading them to your item is really the only avenue of sales at EBay. I feel like my items fall much higher on the search list. I have sold part-time at EBay since 1998, but my sales history and feedback history on EBay doesn’t reflect all of my sales and FB. The did recently increase my total sales count, but 10 or more years is missing. I do not think being a longtime EBay seller gives much of a boost to you listing priority in search. Thanks for any feedback always 🌹

    I sell on Whatnot and I love the streams BUT there are too many sellers and not enough serious buyers at this point in time. This means that often items sell for much less than eBay for the average seller. However I can easily sell 30-50 items in an hour or two so to me the trade off can be worth it because sone of those items can sit on ebay for 6 months+
    However, I think that once Whatnot gets more buyers its gonna be seriously amazing. That is unless eBay live gets going....

    • @bennystratton7734
      @bennystratton7734 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      and if your a business and your model is long tail items (6 months+ ) then this is no issue many many resellers are using whatnot as a sourcing tool because just because you cant sell it or don't want to wait for it to sell doesn't mean others are willing to do what you are not i guess its a win win (especially if sellers are willing to give there items away for next to nothing on whatnot) only way you can really make money on there is if you have a SOCIAL media following this is fact many YT'ers have admit that its basically a sit for those YT'ers that have the LIST it and flip it quick model and not the list it and forget about it model but yes until they get a 1 to 1 ratio of items to buyers those without a Social media following are going to keep just giving there inventory away for next to nothing

    I could sort of see what not being the main marketplace for small low priced items , I remember dave using it to get rid of low price items a while back then you see him and you too out buying stuff with the main idea to sell it on what not , its sort of taken the place of selling lower priced items with a quick look them its the not for the higher priced items with pictures that you can study and blow up and a nice description . I watched a little bit of your what not sale last night its not really for me because im not a quick buyer i like to look compare prices and set back and make a decision on to buy or not . But like you say its not for everyone and it does have its place in the market .

    I feel lucky that my sourcing honey holes are good for my main categories media of all stripes except LP’s and books there’s several resellers of them here and I very rarely find anything unless they are just putting it out. I don’t have storage to have a lot of low end in my categories. I also have a lot of long tail stuff that just seems like would not move on wotnot. My thrift stores are great well 80% of them one try’s to be a retail store. I have been making content on TH-cam for 15 years but only recently decided to share my eBay and it’s helped some but I don’t think I could leverage that to make a wotnot. I stay with what I know and dabble with oddities and the new and shiny. I wish my store was like an old record store I went to as a teenager and into my early twenties. I would go there three times a week to look around. It was just one of those places that you enjoyed being there.

    I was a seller for 18 years and what I sold definitely changed. Never did sell recently made mass-market items, except for things like printer ink left over when a printer keeled. Lower end vintage ANYTHING has always bottomed out first; the high end has always maintained its value better, for longer. It happened to jewelry and furniture, and it will happen to everything else too sooner or later. Chain thrift stores here, btw, are in the Why Bother zone. Firmly. They put anything good on line for almost retail and put the trash in the stores at high prices. No jewelry in the stores at all of any sort, no clothes worth reselling, no antiques, no toys. Nada. And the competition is fiece for whatever gets through by mistake. Am I ever glad I quit. Only the smaller charity stores, real charity, are worth hitting and the Pandemic killed off my favorite honey holes. My experiential shopping, btw, is in person or no sale. I prefer to hunt at rummage and estate sales - and use my brains to out-shop the kiddies searching on their phones. The basic rule at those is if you have to stand there and look an item up, someone else is already buying it.

    Very informative information and gives me some insight as to why my sales are so poor this year. I'm down about 150 sales for the year. My hats, T-shirts, Plush and small end items are just sitting and I do believe it is from What Not. I don't begrudge What Not Buyers and Sellers but Ebay really needs to wake up before they lose more resellers as I am getting out of my store as soon as I can. Done with all the games Ebay plays and the competition is getting worse every day. Thanks Kevin for all the info. You woke me up to some of what's going. At least you are savvy enough to change things around when you have too. I am just too old for all this. lol

    I resell a bit on eBay. I also buy for various hobbies (as collector, not a resller). I give myself an "allowance" of what I will spend in a week. A lot of that money now goes to Whatnot instead of eBay. So people selling in collctible cards or vinyl records have lost some of my business. They give it away on Whatnot. I see the upside for Kevin, but I'm not sure why the average person would sell on that platform.

    Issue I’m having living in the Bay Area is thrift stores are pricing used clothing at almost the prices of new so I can see these stores dying out in my area at least. Second the websites where you could get vintage wholesale and bales are all out of stock and when you order now they send junk. Third the source for these vintage wholesale lots are being picked through and taken by the employees it’s so bad now i have lots of evidence on this. homie handouts and back door resellers that come in and scoop up thousands of pounds before they are sent out. I’ve seen so many reseller TH-cam videos and tik toks of the homie handout back door operations that’s so bad now its insane. And last but not least eBay’s algorithm is killing so much commerce for people they are going to any other dang platform they can find. This is indisputable I have receipts.

      Yeah I've been saying I think this is the main thing that killed the used clothing market- not only did thrift stores raise their prices but retailers this year have been running massive sales to get rid of the inventory they overbought. I've seen so many complaints about lowballing on poshmark, problem is now I see retailers selling NWT items in stores for the same price as I used to sell those brands pre owned on poshmark. There's just no way to compete with that.

    What you describe is typical of online selling. When there are lots of common collector items, they sell briskly at first at good prices, but then the market becomes saturated. But with the rare collector items, the market can't be saturated because there just aren't that many of them. I have seen this in the classical record market - there are now only a tiny number of classical records that sell for over $100 or over $1000, compared to the situation in 20 years ago. Of course, a lot of the collectors have died.

    I started writing several comments, but started over after thinking this whole concept over. I listened to several podcasts from various sources today regarding the diversity of reselling avenues. The idea that I kept coming back to was niches, kinda like TTC's venture of Dibdit. More curated selling instead of trying to appeal to all. Will all those buyers find their way to the diversity of selling platforms? Perhaps. I also think you're bang on about selling low priced, low value stuff. I also wonder if the YT community gets all bogged down in the minutiae....there are millions of sellers on eBay who are selling just fine without giving a hoot about Whatnot. 😂

    • @commonwealthflipper
      @commonwealthflipper  ปีที่แล้ว

      True but there certainly are a ton of options for people to choose in which way best suits their own reselling tastes. Do it all everywhere or just one thing in one place or even a few niches on the best platform. Choices are good. Thank you for your comment.

      My sales are up and down, trying different things, and actually had a good sales day yesterday. What I've been doing - praying over my business (something I tend to forget), backing out of promoted listings. Listing 10 items a day, at least 5 days a week. Ending and selling similar 200 listings, 5 days a week; when I do, I tweak my asking price, make sure immediate payment is on, 'cause ebay has removed it on me, stop promoting, also I'm removing local pickup, I have found that buyers get confused for some reason, and in 11 years, I have had maybe 3 local pickup sales. One day at a time, I also quit cross posting, I spent so much time on that, and made about $1500 this year on Mercari, and $50 on FBMP. Not worth my time. Hope this helps, it seems to be working for me.

    I think that a lot of part time sellers will end up just unloading their inventory before the IRS puts the $600 reporting requirement in effect. It will further drive prices down. As far as WhatNot? As a seller, I don’t like it because my preferred niche is very competitive. As a buyer, the drawback is time. It’s a lot quicker for me to buy 20 items online at a regular site like eBay that buy 20 items on WhatNot.

    What’s that saying? “The only sure thing in life is death & taxes” or something along those lines…shouldn’t we include inevitable change.
    People are creatures of habit, it’s comforting. Change is uncomfortable even if it’s positive.
    I live in the Milwaukee metro area. I’ve watched thrift store prices skyrocket in the last year. Coffee mugs at Goodwill in our area were .99 in January, now they are $2.49 and the shelves are filled.
    My daughter and I generally source at Goodwill outlet bins because the prices are just too high.
    As far as change, I can adjust accordingly. I’m not a shopper or impulse shopper. I believe it’s why I’m not a fan of WhatNot. That doesn’t mean it’s a bad platform, it’s just not for me.

It makes no sense to me, your cost of selling an item whether $15 or $40 is the same, other than the cog. I haven’t gone the what not route, as a solo reseller it’s difficult to send out $40-$50 packages overnight. I’ve also tried buying on the site, but many sellers are unorganized and take too long to run their auctions. I watched one who was so chatty, she only sold 2 items in 15 min. Social media and live auctions are real time suckers. When I join the what not sellers, I will utilize my experiences to up my game.
