How could you not know who Paul Tergat was in his time? Khalid, use to train in the woods of Forest Park, in Queens NY, in the mid 1990's. I used to see him training there at times with his ex wife Sandra. Khalid was a terror in his era. Good all around guy.

If there was a “king of cross country” in this race it was the five-time World Cross champion Paul Tergat, not Haile who only managed a single bronze at the event.

I'm sorry to have to correct you, but Hailey was not at the end of his career at this point in time as you mentioned, remember that he broke the WR twice in a row at the Berlin marathon years after this particular race

I remember later when Haile broke the 2:04 barrier (went 2:03:59 in 2008 at Berlin) I thought that was absolutely insane. (A year earlier he went bellow 2:05 also with a WR)

Haile run this marathon (his first rela marathon) in 2.06.36 (not 2.o8!), exactly the magic rythm 3 minutes\km. And Stefano Baldini was to be Olympic champion 2 years after this.

This would have been the second ever 2:05 marathon. KK ran 2:05:43 at the 99 Chicago Marathon. In this video, the 2002 London marathon KK lowered his WR to 2:05:38. It was the first marathon however that two men dipped under 2:06 in the same race.

Gebreselassie and Paul Tergat raced against each other many times on the track. Gebreselassie often won but not in this marathon. Tergat became a politician in Kenya, I believe.
