@@TheOfficialprincessa Not when it hit Jamaica, it was still a category three at the time.
@@corenchiereynaldo2417think about it if if Gilbert was a category 3 hurricane and category 5 hurricane Ivan never cause as much damage as Gilbert did den nuh muss category 5 man fi Gilbert worse than ivan

Hi from Costa Rica!
OMG!!! I'm from Costa Rica and I listened to this song and dance so many times as a child and never understand the meaning behind it until now. So proud of the strength of these amazing people in those difficult times. God bless Jamaica
35 years ago Gilbert lick Jamaica... I wonda if all Dem people still deh bout.
Good thing our house was 100%concrete.. and it still standing to dis day.
2023 still listening. From the Caribbean of Nicaragua.
My father used to bump this all the time. His brother was also named Gilbert🤣 Reggae song but us Hondurenos love it.
"as most Jamaicans do in the face of hardships and tragedy, THEY SING ABOUT IT".. .
wow! That's being brave!
34 years later and I still remember it like it was yesterday. The water came under the door
Was 8 yrs old when Gilbert struck in 1988. Still have the memories of walking in the darkness to go the shelter in the night with my mom and dad after a tree fell into the small house we were living in. It was difficult but we pulled through as a poor country
I was 6 and it was so frightening and exciting at the same time, I remembered we came out when the eye was passing and thought the storm was over, the sky was so clear and blue, it was so amazing, but we’re looking up into the eye, after the storm cams back and was stronger than before. Best days ever
The spirit of Jamaicans are even stronger after a disaster. For the friends and family we lost in the aftermath of Hurricane Gilbert, rest in peace. You are not firgotten. For the survivors, we can rebuild and move on to bigger and better things. God Bless.
I don't remember an extended version, but this is even better! Greatest weather-related song ever written. Can't believe it was only 26 years ago,
I dont think they play the extended version on jbc. I don't remember it at all
I was in Kingston for this hurricane. This song captures every striking thing that we experienced; me sweeping water out the house with the broom, stuff you found in the garden the next day, videos and TVs suddenly going down to $60 JA and $120 JA on the black market, $2 dollar beers now costing $10, etc. The song is legendary. Brilliant!
Its unbelievable how this song is still relevant
I was 8 when Gilbert came through JA. It was easily the scariest thing I ever experience. I still remember ever word to this song.
Marcia Forbes from PHASE 3 Productions did this video. No funds - just driven by her conviction that Lovindeer's song was too good to go by without visuals! So she called on her friends, staff, colleagues to be the talent, I was one of them! We had a blast recording this video...cannot believe it's been so many years....but all now my NUH LIKE bully beef!! lol
I have to say that Lovindeer was just a lyrical Genius......dish immigrate like flying saucer without a valid visa ha ha
Let me apologize...Mr Lovindeer is still alive so he IS A lyrical genius...Fyahhhhhh
Symon Templar
Dish take off like flying saucer , the roof migrate without a visa
I remember September 1988 hurricane Gilbert came to Jamaica 🇯🇲 I was getting ready to go to school because I didn’t know there was a hurricane coming. When it came in one hour our roof was gone. We had to run to my grand aunt house 🏡 for shelter.
#memories
This brings back memories, I remember me and my grandmother and auntie put our things to go stay in a church close to where we live a lot of other people was there because we live in a board house we stayed about 2 days in the church, funny thing our house was okay memories

Gilbert still stands firmly in the hurricane record books 30+ yrs later. 888mb atmospheric pressure for all the meteorologist out there.
I was born 9 years after hurricane gilbert, but the endless stories from my parents make me feel like i was in it lol
Believe it or not, in the third year of bachelor degree in Geology, in a class of Natural risks and Hazard while we were working on a project about Managua, the teacher put this song through the speakers.
He told us this song was playing in club when he was there !
This took place in France in 2022.
Sometimes this is how the songs travel i think, great memory !!
This song was a hit in 1988 in the Mexican Caribbean where Hurricane Gilbert devastated Cancun City
this is a classic they don't make them like this anymore....great story....great satire....today's generation can learn something
Lovindeer tear down the place in this time with this some. In a crucible time this song created optimism and harmony between us as Jamaicans. BIG UP Lovindeer this song full of content.
This was the greatest time in my childhood… everyone was in the same bed… Mom Dad bothers cousins…. And we just spoke all kind of stories… My parents didn’t told how horrible the hurricane was for the Jamaican economy as kids…. They made sure we had a good time when it happened…
We are great people, who can take bad things and make joke ; Gilbert , was a wicked storm .
This is 30 years ago, but it still funny .
Great song...who else is listening in 2023
they played this video on Trinidad tv all day in the late 80's
I was just in my early teens when this storm came to JA, no mother or father, my dad had just passed away! I was staying with him! I had to stay in to CHUCH @ Sheffield Westmoreland! Wow I have came a long way!
Im from Sheffield too. I remember people had to shelter at Sheffield SDA. God bless

This song still shot in 2019. Hurricane Dorian out right now cat 5 in Bahamas and headed to Florida.
On September 12, with winds reaching 175 miles per hour, the now Category 5 hurricane devastated Jamaica. With a 40-mile-wide eye, the hurricane covered the entire island. The tin roofs that covered most homes were no match for the winds-about 80 percent of the island’s homes were seriously damaged and approximately 500,000 of the country’s 2 million people were left homeless. Nearly every home on the island lost electricity. Worst of all, more than 200 people lost their lives.
Two days later, Gilbert was still going strong when it crossed the Gulf of Mexico and hit the Yucatán Peninsula. The resort town of Cancun lost half of its hotels and nearby Cozumel was also severely damaged. Thirty thousand people in the area lost their homes. As the storm moved toward the peninsula’s west side, tens of thousands were forced to flee. In all, almost 200,000 Mexicans were left homeless by Gilbert.
In the Gulf of Mexico, a 300-foot Cuban freighter caught in the storm was thrown into a shrimp boat, killing 28 people. More people were killed when the hurricane moved to the northeast coast of Mexico near Monterrey. Police evacuated the area, but sent people on a detour along the Santa Cantina River. A flash flood of the river caught four buses and several cars unprepared and 200 people were washed away. Finally, a spate of tornadoes on the edge of Gilbert killed 3 people in Texas.

Amazing how God has a way of bringing people together if they don't do it on their own and share with others!
I have been looking for this song for years. Brings back so many memories
Imagine 30 years already, I remember it as if it was last week.
@G M I was 14 then, I'm now 46. I don't consider that old, do you? If you do its bc you're stupid.
@G M is that your routine? What do you use to tighten "down there?" Maybe you could try it on your mouth as well.
@Lex Luger How do you know what I'm using? Sick, creepy and disgusting much? You obviously need a life. Maybe you hang out by a pond or some dutty water somewhere. Go get a life lousy, loose, loser.
Big up Jamaica my home
