A Microscribe used to be around $2000. Now it's $12,500! I've been thinking of making my own, and this old video pops in my feed. Nice!
I worked on software to interface with 3D digitizers like this some 30 years ago.

Very nice! Do you offer the bill of materials for this build? Is the software available?
    Interested,

Thank you for the link. I am collecting materials to build a digitizer for myself.

very cool project, i also try to make some kind like this, but i use portabel microscope & moving tip to compare profile part and compare to drawing,

Great work. Do you have this in bigger sizes and can you measure outlines of any type of part no matter how small it is. If so I would be interested in buying or building my own. Also what is the software that you used to get the information from the audino.

Nice concept here, I'm looking forward to future development.
Using a (exchangeable) ball for the tip would make this a bit more serious device. Don't need to be the diamond version like on the Zeiss measurement instruments, I think a small steelball with 3mm diameter will be fine :)
Much easier to locate the holes precisely and very usefull for freeforms too.
For the measuring of 2D contours a small cylinder (dia3-6mm) on it would be helpful?
You can add a threaded rod to the tip and use it without anything or with a small steelball or whatever the user wants to add -> free defineable tool libary!

    Nikolaj,
I love your project, but I have one small suggestion for an improvement. Design the base to be "plugged into" a pegboard with dowel pins. That way you can capture points on different sides of an object and then easily joint your point clouds. The hole spacing will determine your registration points.

Hi there! This is an extremely useful tool. I used Microscribe G2 digitizers back in my laboratory days but am looking for something similar without the heavy price tag, that i can take into my home workshop and use to get measurements of parts. Do you have a web link to the encoders you used?
    Best,
    -Mike
