Italian ex-LE officer here. The thing I remember the most from my shooting training was taught to me from our instructor in pistol shooting: "You've chosen a job in which you could be killed doing your duty, at least try to not die because you were stupid or lazy". After that I trained myself more seriously (even went to a private shooting range to train further) and always cleaned and maintained my service gun religiously.

Great advice. When i was in the police academy in the early "70's" one of my instructors said "you will never loose a fight you don't get involved in." That stuck with me throughout my career. Blessings

Avoid them whenever possible. The feller I took several classes had something to say about that. If you’re going to fight with fists expect to be hit with fists. If you’re going to fight with knives expect to be cut or stabbed. If you’re going to fight with firearms expect you may be shot. If the prospect of any of these don’t sound good avoid the fight. (Edit: but train so hopefully you’re the one who ends the fight still standing)

My one & only gunfight was in 1974 against three armed robbery suspects. Our training back then consisted of bulls eye shooting our thirty-eights back to the fifty yard line so to say I was not prepared is an understatement. In the aftermath one officer was shot in the chest (no vests then) but recovered & returned to duty, one suspect was dead from gunshot wounds we inflicted, another suspect was arrested at a local hospital the following day seeking treatment for gunshot wounds we inflicted & the last suspect surrendered at the scene. Our range training changed dramatically after that but I’m not sure anything can really prepare anyone for what happens in a gunfight. Sage advise here, don’t go to dangerous places & look for trouble.

Great presentation. I knew the answer, but it is nice to hear someone that people respect echo it. I work as a volunteer RSO at a popular local public shooting range. I have used this very same approach in a humorous way with shooters at our range. I ask the question “do you want to know how to always win a gun fight?” I then answer, “don’t get in one.”
I have to take exception with one part of your presentation, no one that knew how to use it ever lost a gunfight with a 1911, 😆🤣

Needless to say, I knew the punch line at the outset. It doesn't matter how good you are... a gangbanger half a block away holding his gun sideways and shooting as he sprints across the street can still get off a lucky shot that catches you right between the eyes. And as the "good guy", you're ALWAYS at the disadvantage. You have to respond to the other guy's actions. It's very rare that you will get to be the one to initiate proceedings. All we can do is train to give ourselves the best possible chance in case the balloon goes up. And in most cases, the most effective training in that respect is that which teaches us to see that balloon starting to rise from a mile away, and getting the hell outta Dodge! (Especially pertinent in my jurisdiction, where only the bad guys are allowed to EDC!)

Really good video with a very good message. If more people would simply train with the firearm they have and be more proficient with basic shooting fundamentals for that defensive tool rather than get caught up in all the "tacti-cool" stuff, they would be so much better prepared. That and practice better alertness when they are walking through a Walmart parking lot instead of having their head buried in their mobile device. Or people who climb into their car at the shopping center and with their doors unlocked, immediately focus on their phones or handbags oblivious to the fact that someone, (me) is standing right next to their unlocked door as they fail to notice. Best way to avoid a gun fight is to be aware of your surroundings. Avoid situations that could expose you to a predator(s) who are out looking for an easy target.

    • @timclaus8313
      @timclaus8313 2 ปีที่แล้ว

6 well placed shots that hit targets is much better than 17 rounds of spray and pray. That said, folks need to carry what they are comfortable and effective with, but also need to shoot their particular piece of choice effectively.

Mr Funk has read the Art of War. Absolutely correct, this is also the way to win a war, never get into one in the first place; and if you cannot avoid it, make sure you are able to finish it, and finish it quickly. I was always taught in my martial arts class it is better to walk away from a fight and be considered a coward, than end up with a mess, both legally and morally. Live to fight another day!

My FTO, a Vietnam Green Beret, had me stop on the side of the road, it's 2 am. He asked this, "the car you just stopped has 4 men in it (my town bordered an army/air force base), they're drunk. We know that this spot on the road has no radio reception so you can't radio it in (you screwed up stopping them in the wrong spot). Within moments, all 4 get out of the car and are approaching you. What are you going to do?" I stumbled answering since I didn't want to admit I really wanted to get the heck out of there. He stopped me and said, "if it was me, I'd leave the stop and regroup." "You??? You would leave and regroup?", I said. "Yep." Best lesson ever. He was the last guy I thought would ever leave a stop, last guy to be afraid. He looked at me and said, "the best weapon you have is your brain, use it first. Don't push the fight if you can avoid it. We all need to go home after our shift and that requires clear thinking more than tombstone courage." I've never forgot that night or that lesson.

Bravo! I've always said that the real first rule of a gun fight is to not show up! I'm thrilled to see someone actually say it. Obviously if you can't avoid the gun fight, you want to load the dice in your favor. But you can still lose no matter how good you are or how good your equipment is. Even if you win and come out uninjured, there will still be an aftermath that you have to go through no mater how righteous you were.

I haven’t read all 160+ comments, but I am truly heartened that so many subscribers agree that avoidance - whenever possible - is the wisest policy.
Many decades ago, when I was a junior officer newly assigned in Philadelphia - even then, a city with many wonderful attributes, but quite a few very sketchy areas - I became violently ill (I suspect food poisoning of some sort) at about 0230. I had no real knowledge of civilian medical facilities in Northeast Philadelphia (where I lived) and I didn’t want to call an ambulance, so I drove - I-95 was then nonexistent - on surface streets though North Philly (a notoriously bad area) and Center City to the Naval Hospital is South Philly. I was too sick to wait until morning and I knew I’d be transiting some rather dangerous neighborhoods - critically, with ZERO local knowledge - at prime-crime-time. So I loaded my S&W model 27 and a couple speed loaders, drove the ~25 miles - blessedly without incident, - and I was quickly cured at the Emergency Room.
Why do I report this tedious and lengthy story? Because the important lesson I discovered that night was LOCAL KNOWLEDGE/PREPARATION IS CRUCIAL TO AVOIDING POTENTIAL ARMED CONFRONTATIONS. Certainly, we all appreciate the great value of avoidance, but I respectfully suggest it especially applies in unfamiliar venues and circumstances. Therefore (fwiw), ever since that night in the early-1970’s, I always try to ascertain both where the closest medical facilities are located and how to get to them without transiting higher-crime areas, whenever I’m on the road.

I would like to see a video comparing a pocket 380 vs a pocket type 38 special revolver. Draw from concealment, empty the gun into the target, score total points and the time on each one. Prolly between 15 and 20 feet. In my opinion, this would give a CCW person a realistic defense comparison. If the 380 has 6 or 7 rounds available and the 38 has only 5, this will still be a valid demonstration. Because which ever you carry, that is what you have....no reloading in a real encounter, especially in a court of law for a civilian.

Good day and I hope you are well. I really enjoy your content and message. Your video about never getting into a gunfight being the only way to win one is very poignant and correct. I would like to suggest to you that a video on situational awareness and how to get out of a potential conflict would be a good follow up to this. TY for your military service (my dad was a Marine in WW2) and TY for your Law Enforcement service as well. I got your six and 2A all the way. God bless.

I'm still a fan of the original piano intro music too, reminds me of my Uncle Ray who served in the Navy who always played piano like that intro. Just sayin' :D

Another Great video. As I have learned over the years, always be prepared and well trained, then Pray that you never have to use what you've trained for. By the way, glad to see you are using a wireless mic, adds much to the video. Always an enjoyable part of my day. Thanks from Las Vegas.

Oh God, here it comes. Avoidance is the best defense. Don't get in a gunfight and you will certainly never lose, that's for sure. I have been preaching this for 30 years. When I was younger, I was obsessed with quick drawing out of concealment, and putting lead downrange as fast as possible. Several years of training, and got real good at it. Problem is, what happens afterwards, when the bad guy is dead and you're standing there, explaining it to the cops?? Yeah, I met a guy who did that. And he, by the grace of God, was never charged with manslaughter. But it was very close. Too close. He quit carrying, and vowed he would never be put in that situation ever again.
Yeah, everybody wants to be a tough guy. Until you're perfectly justified, in the right.... yet staring down 20 years in prison.
I'm going for the avoidance thing now. I still carry. But will always be super aware of my surroundings, my environment, my reasons.
Thanks Mr Funk! You're a great man.

Bravo one thing you forgot ,once you pull that trigger you can not take it back, and just because you can justify it doesn't make you sleep any better knowing that, and if your thinking about buying a gun for home protection please take that into consideration because hesitation is almost a guarantee you will loose a gunfight and there are alternatives out there without being fatal.

I have never fired a gun in anger, and hope that I will never feel the need to do so. Avoiding violent conflict should be attempted always, but we see that avoidance is often not possible. Best advice still seems to be reason, avoid, flight and, lastly, be accurate.

"Don't go to stupid\high risk places" ... Of course I agree with this sentiment. But much of the time the 'trouble\stupid\high risk' comes to normal places. In those circumstances, my preferred solution (while being prepared with good EDC solution and hopefully satisfactory training) is to keep my ego in check and retreat if at all possible. 'Go to gun' only as very last resort. I acknowledge that this is advice very hard to remember and follow under crisis-stress. But Every bullet fired has a lawyer attached to it.

Best defense, no be there. That's how you win a gunfight, you stay away from situations that might force you to engage in one in the first place. That's how as a martial arts instructor, I was never forced to use my training to defend myself. And now as a firearms instructor, I still have not come across a situation where I had to use deadly force.
Now, that does not mean I do not carry a firearm or practice my arts, but it simply means that if you understand where most fights occur, and do your best to stay away from them, it will greatly reduce the likelihood of you having to engage in a life-or-death situation.
