    By the way, the memory card they find in the Mess Hall works with their equipment because the military gave them the same type/brand of equipment as the previous team(s)

    I feel like we live in ADD culture if a movie doesn't start off fast we say its slow movies that came out in the 70s would never work today

      anthony cheesman that’s why the new blade runner flopped. Nobody can handle a slow burner anymore.
      Luckily there’s still enough of an audience that movies for people with a brain still get made.
      My first time on this channel but I can tell the subs here are into garbage popcorn flicks. Like Transformers, Pacific Rim, Geostorm, Maze Runner, etc. Not an oscars crowd.

      It's really sad. ADHD is rising very very fast and it's mainly because kids aren't allowed to be bored anymore. Constant stimulation of the brain isn't healthy for them. It's not even their fault, the culture is pushing this kind of mentality because it pays to have a generation that's always moving to the next thing, the next thing, the next thing...

    This is the most accurate review I've seen so far. You guys understood the themes and were paying attention instead of just calling it trash like other certain reviewers. And I totally agree on the survival horror thing. It did feel like one of those games at times minus the playable parts with a lot of creatures. And I'm glad you did not reveal where it goes because that is something many are not going to see coming. The sound and score there was so well done. As far as it being slow at times, like the beginning, I'm willing to give it more of a pass because the original Alien and The Thing (1982) were the same way. And the ideas explored made the whole thing worth it to me. It was unpredictable and with that concept it should be. I dunno, I usually love this type of sci fi that doesn't hold your hand if it's acted well enough and done right...I understand this won't be for everyone but I loved it. That last act was damn near hypnotizing.

    what's the problem with slow paced movies? it's not an action movie, it can take it's time to build up the main character and slowly increase the weirdness and the atmosphere.

      Doesn’t help that they marketed the movie as a monster thriller

    I loved this film, I only wish I had seen it in theaters. It was here for literally 3 days and then it was gone. Eventually, I caught it on tv and I couldn't believe the movie had been shelved.
    The bear scene is one of the most intense scenes ever for me. Just helplessness in the face of the inexplicable and unexplainable. The scene where Lena broke down remembering the day her husband left was good for cementing why she went in the first place.

    Turns 5 today!
    Garland makes quite the cerebral experience; fascinating but scary
    The twist will be very divisive for many but at the same time it addresses "depression, grief, and the human propensity for self-destruction"
    2 hours makes this a bit slow but the mood matches the disturbing cosmic horror
    One scene in particular is like something out of a nightmare
    Great acting on Portman’s behalf as well
    With The Shimmer how much of it stays with these people affecting them during and after?
    This is a much more experimental approach from Garland pondering self-destruction, mortality and what we do to the earth
    'Annihilation' manages to make the very thought of mutation and evolution seem horrifying, which is proof enough of just how well it taps into the cosmic horror genre’s unique brand of terror

    You guys should check out some of the behind the scenes and see some of the concept art for the "bear". There is one illustration where most of its fur is gone is flesh color (think of a pig). You can also clearly see the left side of its face which, without spoiling the film, signals some very disturbing implications of what happened (or is happening to its first victim). I mean, you can still see it on the film but you can easily miss it if you are not paying attention. I think they shot it in the dark partly due to budgetary issues. I would have loved to see this creature brought to life in the 80s/90s by the like of Stan Winston or Rob Bottin.

    I saw this film and was blown away. Perhaps I don't know what people mean by "slow." There's not a lot of action in the film, but I'm sure it's intentional. I would've loved it less if they went into the Shimmer right away, without so much background information to absorb and think about. It's important to cover a lot of bases or you risk having an incomprehensible mess of a movie. I often agree with Double Toasted but the only real complaint seemed to be this 'pacing issue' and I couldn't find that in my experience, so it was a magnificent movie. I hope it wins a few oscars next year.

    • @1080TJ
      @1080TJ 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      There's some freaky body horror stuff that comes from the mutation of everything. Not just humans but animals and plants too. A lot of it is actually beautiful in a weird way. Only one moment I'd consider "gore" in the traditional sense but it's pretty gross. Think the chestburster scene from Alien but more subtle. If you're really sensitive about that sort of thing and don't mind mild spoilers I'll describe it below, if not just stop reading.
      They find a memory card with video footage of left behind for any future explorers from the previous expedition. In it, the soldiers are clearly disoriented. One of them (I can't remember his name so I'll call him John) is in an especially bad state. Another soldier takes a decent sized knife and cuts open John's stomach. You can see what appear to be intestines but then they start moving and it's made clear that whatever's inside John's stomach is alive. Like some kind of worm. Later on they find John's remains and they've undergone a pretty freaky mutation.

    I agree the pacing was slow and made the movie feel boring at times. But, I also see how the pacing was used to play into the whole insidious theme of the movie. Things appear to be moving slowly and then next you know it you've reached annihilation. Definitely not for everyone. I give it a matinee. I wouldn't change the run time but wish the more boring elements were punched up with a little something extra.

    Representation is key. I’m glad to see the women looking strong but I completely understand why the Asian community feel they was not represented if in the book the main character was Asian.

    • @MystikalScopeProductions
      @MystikalScopeProductions 6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Derrick Batts well to be fair the director never read the other books and their ethnicities were never explained in the first book hence their names are obscured as hell. So he’s accurately following the book but without influence of he other books

    • @Rion032
      @Rion032 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      MystikalScope Productions Well the director, Alex Garland, was in communication with the author of the book trilogy, so even if Garland only knew about one book the author should've told him about this fact.
      Also, all 3 books were released in 2014, so it's not as if Garland would have had to wait a few years to read about what happened.
      I believe that the former completely trusted that the latter would tell them everything important to make a successful movie. That makes sense.
      I think the author may have not really thought that the character's ethnicity was important while not realizing the lack of Asian representation in mainstream Western media and the impact that has had on Asian artists being able to secure work.
      Stories where characters' ethnicities aren't important are just as valuable as ones where ethnicity is brought up. This is especially true for underrepresented groups where popular stories often revolve around a particular feature of said groups. This can make it difficult to see individuals within these groups as characters for other kinds of stories.
      This movie had a character whose ethnicity was stated in the source material, and she still got white washed.
      By the way, I think everyone involved in the film is obviously very talented and successful. This is just sad.

    • @Missrena1000
      @Missrena1000 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Rion032 How many famous Asian women that you know will sell seat? Representation doesn’t really manner to most people. As long as the story is good.

    • @Missrena1000
      @Missrena1000 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Derrick Batts That had box office success? In the end, money is the name of the game. I don’t think I need to see someone who looks like me in order to like a movie. I find the notion of representation a bit racist in of itself as it functions under the notion that people will only like a character if they look just like them. And only them.

    Great movie. Honestly didn’t have any problems with the pacing. It was slow but it had cadence while the movie moved along for me instead of being sluggish where you didn’t care where it was going. The last 15 minutes are some of the most craziest things I’ve seen in a movie to date. Plus, the soundtrack deserves some credit too, adds more to movie. That fucking bear, EEEEHH GADD!

  • @Sunsp0t_Lu
    @Sunsp0t_Lu ปีที่แล้ว

    Oscar Isaacs character didn’t know because it wasn’t really him. He had been duplicated while in area X and went on to exist as an owl, and I suspect the doppelgängers get teleported to the last significant location of their predecessor by way of the lighthouse or the “tunnel “ in the book. This honestly should have been two films to cover the first book because they leave out an ass ton of contextual information.
    Also, the team may seem like their affects are off for good reason. The psychologist on the team has been using post hypnotic suggestion on them since before the entered area X to manipulate their moods and keep them moving forward. The psychologist is also secretly the director of the Southern Reach (the group sending people into area X), and she wanted to investigate it because a guy she knew as a kid used to operate the lighthouse and during her first trip inside she thought she saw a transformed version of him.
    As crazy as the movie is, the book is wayyyy crazier. There had actually been dozens more teams sent in than the team we follow were lead to believe, and there’s actually footage of the first voyage that shows proof positive that people were being duplicated, so why were teams still being sent in?
    Well, the only survivor of the first expedition was a duplicate and now he wants to feed area X.

    Just watched this movie again and went back to see what DT thought about it. Good review. I really liked the movie but the guys made some good points. Didn't feel it was too slow and yes, after having read the book it is fine to speculate that the environment has an affect on the character decisions! If anything, I felt that the movie over-explains the Lovecraftian elements as Korey alludes to and would've benefited from being more abstract - but possibly at the cost of a wider audience. However the score and art direction in the final act made me forgive some of the minor flaws. Sometimes movies work on the basis that they leave you with a feeling. And this movie did. The book gives you a similar feeling but benefits from an excellent 'unreliable' narrator conceit that adds a whole new dimension to the story. The movie played it straight.

      Honestly, that's what worked about the original. It treated everything from music, the surrounding people and setting like it was this high concept horror movie, the only catch was the leads playing it for straight laughs.
      By having the leads be silly from word one and playing it more as a comedy it hurt both subsequent movies. If they did Ghostbusters again, make it more of a horror movie with comedians in it.

      I was too. They are two different types of films aimed at different audiences. If you want something a lot more original and are a sci fi/horror fan (not the jump scare kind), this will probably be up your alley. I thought it was awesome and still haven't stopped thinking about it since seeing it last night. It's beautifully disturbing.

    This movie was amazing and completely under appreciated. Its gorgeous, well written and paced deliberately and brilliantly. Superhero movies have made people STUPID. Yeah, they're fun but they are just making movie goers dumber. If a movie makes people think or if there's no action for a half hour they just tune out or call it "boring, pretentious and artsy". That's how dumb people say "I dont get it and I'm not willing to try".

    A film loved by people who simply haven’t seen that many films outside of a Star Wars or comic book-canon, so they were freaked out by it.
    Ex Machina and Men (by the same director) are both quietly excellent and disturbing. But Annihilation is just squishy rubbish, and dull as hell for long stretches. The cast is unconvincing, the ideas rehashed, and the plan to investigate apparently drawn up by morons. 🙄

  • @SeanRyno

    You're all wrong.
    This is a story about a grieving woman, who loses her mind looking for answers, until she hallucinates a narrative that is so much more comfortable than the truth, that she commits to it. Much like in the movie "Shutter Island".
    There are clues.

    • @blakefowler8082
      @blakefowler8082 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      What are the clues? I fail to see any evidence of another event taking place than the one we were shown at the end. It seems its litrally about the fragilness of life and ones exsistance. You can almost look at it like evolution. A metor hits wiping out a form of animal i.e dinosaurs. Then another animal taking rise of the same planet. Kinda like us. Natural, yet we live our lifes so alien from how other species live theres. It's like the movie is saying that you can understand the unknown by looking at yourself. Thats why the alien is like a mirrored image of Portmans charecter towards the end of the film.

    • @SeanRyno
      @SeanRyno 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Blake Fowler No the movie is extremely deep.

    • @SeanRyno
      @SeanRyno 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Blake Fowler Just probably not in the way you want it to be.
      Or I'm wrong and it's a shitty girl-power sci-fi soaked in iridescent psychedelic pretties.
      If I am correct, if my theory is correct, then it's probably the best movie I have ever seen. Mostly attributable to the writing.
      And that is a big statement.

    • @blakefowler8082
      @blakefowler8082 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sean Ryno yeah however I definitely like the movie and its certainly open to interpretation. You very well could be right. I guess that's the sign of a good movie. when radically differing interpretations of the movie can both be right. However I'm still not really a fan of the acting in this film. Aswell as the cg. it was kinda hit or miss. Also if you like this movie check out stalker.
