  • Classic movie fans in Japan are saddened at news of the death of legendary actress Setsuko Hara from pneumonia in September at the age of 95.
Hara was born in Yokohama, near Tokyo, in 1920. She made her debut as an actress at the age of 15.
She cemented her stardom as the heroine of the 1937 film The Daughter of the Samurai, co-produced by Germany and Japan.
She starred in many films directed by internationally renowned director Yasujiro Ozu, including Early Summer and Tokyo Story.
Hara's legacy as one of Japan's most prominent actresses in the 20th century continued to live on even though she opted to stay out of the media spotlight after abruptly retiring at the age of 42.

One of the greatest screen presences - transcendent in Tokyo Story and Late Spring.

She had every good quality that Hollywood actresses sadly lack.

She was special. Loved also in the US by those who have seen her work and is fondly remembered.

Japan has many notable actresses. Setsuko is the best. Her beauty, inside & out, her sheer presence, her poignant portrayals of not only Noriko-san, but of all those characters she took on, was remarkable, nearly sublime. She didn't leave the screen due to Ozu's death which occurred in 1963, as she retired in 1962. In all the photos of them together, they do look v. much at ease, even like a couple, but Ozu was known for not having intimate relationships, as was Hara. Whether he or both were gay or not is still up in the air, where it might remain. As they undoubtedly wanted it. R.I.P.

bobbygnosis I wonder about the same thing. She left so early & was out of the spotlight for such a long time. She never married. No great love? Ozu then? A woman perhaps? Oh, i hope life fulfilled some of her dreams & not only kept her family out of financial difficulty, which is no small thing. But such a long life should be worth it. How I loved & missed her after her early retirement at age 41-42. R.I.P. Lovely Nori San. You were so loved. I hope that counted for something.
