I was saturated studying surgery , i had my finals for surgery today and in the morning I actually came to see a video for intussception in the recommended section FORTUNATELY i found this video and i thought “ok why not” I followed it up in my book. My main Essay question for today’s Surgery Final University exams came as “Sigmoid Volvulus” and i FREAKING WROTE EVERYTHING!!!! I could literally hear you sayin “TOM TIP REMEMBER WE SEE A COFFEE BEAN SIGN..” and top to bottom everything from this video was there in my paper ! Thank you so much , no one was expecting this question in our finals this yr and you helped me out !!♥️
Just went through this a couple of month ago. Was having abdominal cramping several days before. Doctor at urgent care just thought it was severe constipation and gave me medication for it. Ended up back in the hospital about four days later, and was admitted to the ER when one of the staff at the urgent care check in noticed I was sitting on the ground in obvious pain. The sigmoidoscopathy decompression procedure was definitely as uncomfortable as it was embarrassing, but the relief after was amazing. By far the worst day, other than the day I was admitted, was the day after surgery, due to the pain from the incision and the constant bloating discomfort of your intestines trying to wake up, not to mention having to get up and force yourself to walk (walking helps wake up your digestive system). What you don't figure into the equation is a lack of sleep due to nurses coming in and changing out IVs, taking blood, giving medication, and the pain/discomfort and a complete lack of any kind of appetite for days. On top of that, you might end up with a flatus tube prior to surgery, and a catheter after. It's an incredibly invasive, exhausting, and mortifying process all told.
Literally in the er typing this and yup. Pain comes and goes i thought it was an ulcer due to taking 800mg ibuprofen for my shoulder pain. Nope. My intestine was just a pretzel lol and the pain is absolutely unbearable
Speaking as a patient, one morning many years ago I woke up with severe pain in my abdomen. Thinking it was probably gas, I tried at first to just ignore it, but it just kept getting worse and worse. After about half an hour it was so excruciating that I could hardly walk! This was by far THE WORST pain I'd ever felt in my life! I crawled to my car and decided to drive myself to the emergency room which was only a few minutes away. They quickly did an x-ray and informed me that my intestines and stomach were twisted into a knot and that they had to operate IMMEDIATELY! By this time I was crumbled into a ball on the floor in pain. The pain I felt was the blood supply being choked off, if they waited even a minute longer, then my intestines would have atrophied from a lack of blood. The next thing I knew, I woke up in a hospital bed the next morning with a long scar across my stomach. According to the doctors, it's something that just happens, and when it does, either you get to a hospital right away for emergency surgery or you die.
Had this 5 years ago, progressive severe pain, was in the OR within hours for right hemicolectomy( and appendectomy). Had bleed post op, Hemoglobin dropped to 7, sent home on iron 3 days postoperative.
This happened to my mother two nights ago and they were certain they’d be removing part of her bowel due to atrophy. I brought her to the ER at 6am with severe vomiting and pain and within a few hours was in emergency surgery. By some miracle they did not have to remove anything and were able to basically just un-twist her. She had been in pain for 5-6 hours before calling me for help that night/morning and I can’t stop thinking about what if she tried waiting longer (she said she was trying to “tough it out”) what if we didn’t rush to the ER when we did and have very responsive staff and doctors? I was shocked to realize how life threatening this condition is and how quickly it can develop.
I had hiatus hernia surgery in April 2022 but it failed , a few months after, my stomach started to twist and become obstructed as half of my stomach was in my chest. Absolutely excruciating! Had more hiatus hernia surgery again in October the same year, in hospital for 3 weeks. In and out of hospital leading up to February 2023 when I almost died from gastric volvulus, had 2 more lots of emergency surgery! Found out in September 2023 that half of my stomach is back in my chest again and that my diaphragm is so weakened and damaged. Surgeon told me that my diaphragm would never stop my stomach from pushing back into my chest, also that my stomach could become twisted and obstructed again, even if they tried to repeat the procedure again, which he told me would now be too risky. I'm now in constant fear of that happening again!
In the hospital still recovering from this surgery. Worst pain ever! Had most of my colon (which was swollen like a puppa fish when they cut me open) cut out and my intestine reconnected.
@@sopretty1846 a year later as of Valentine’s Day and I still have complications unfortunately. Lost all appetite and quite a few hospital stays since 😭 how about yourself?
Earlier this year, my brother came home from training one day and complained of stomach pains- it came and go. each time every cycle of pain got closer and worse and worse. By week two he'd be on the floor screaming and crying. By week three his response to pain would be to vomit. It absolutely has scarred me. All I listened two for the next two weeks was vomiting- I hardly ate and never left my room. He could not keep anything down. We had taken him to the hospital twice and every time they said it was just constipation. One day it got really bad and we had to call an ambulance. My grandma picked me up from the house and my brother was transported to the hospital where he got one scan done, they realized it wasn't normal and demanded he was transferred. After being transferred he was taken for tests and soon after taken in for surgery, as been waiting six weeks his bowel could have died if left longer. He made a very quick and steady recovery and was back to training after two weeks! I am very happy he is better but the impact of listening to him vomit all day- not just because I feel bad. Because it haunts me, it makes me feel sick to the point even making gagging noises makes me nauseous. Besides the point. his intestines where switched sides, so his large intestine is on the opposite of where it was and so is the small intestine. Due to untangling it as it was quite severe.
Thank you very much This video was very informative I had severe abdominal pain and dissension. My Dr. ordered an abdominal C.T. Svan. It was determined that I had a sigmoid volvulus. I had surgery and a bowel resection. Thank God I am fine.

Great video, easy to understand. Currently my wife has been diagnosed with volvulus and after watching your video, I understandit much better. She hasn't had a BM in months and has been in a lot of pain. She has been loosing weight, nauseous, vomiting....etc. She skips meals often because she says the pain after is just too much. She does a lot of enemas trying to get a little relief. The doctor is just giving her a variety of laxatives but nothing helps or works. She says that she doesn't know how much longer she can last and from what I read, her condition is extremely bad. She's been trying to see her doctor for about 2 weeks or so now without any luck. I just wish we could find someone that understands her condition, look at her. I'm really starting to wonder just how much longer I'll have her. Is there anything she can do at home to help while she's waiting to be seen by a doctor?
The poor thing! I would take her to emergency and ask to get all the necessary tests to find out what to do. She may die if she doesn't get the right treatment in time. I will pray for her recovery. God bless you both!
